2 2 Task 1 Introduction You are going to investigate the movement of maggots. In Task 1, you wi investigate the number of times a maggot changes direction as it moves off a piece of fiter paper in ordinary aboratory ight and in reduced ight. Materias You are provided with: 3 maggots cardboard cover 3 fiter papers access to a bow of water at room temperature pastic teaspoon container for hoding maggots after each tria. You may ask your teacher for any other apparatus you require. Method Read these instructions carefuy before you start your investigation. 1. Soak a piece of fiter paper in the water. Remove it and shake it genty to remove excess water. Lay this paper fat on the workspace in front of you. 2. Pace a maggot at the centre of the fiter paper using a pastic teaspoon. 3. Count how many times the maggot changes direction before it moves off the fiter paper. Record the resut in Tabe Remove the maggot, turn the piece of fiter paper over and repace the maggot at the centre of the fiter paper. 5. Pace the cardboard cover over the fiter paper with the sma observation hoe uppermost. This reduces the intensity of ight faing on the maggot. 6. Count how many times the maggot changes direction before it moves off the fiter paper. Record your resut in Tabe Remove the maggot and discard the fiter paper. 8. Repeat steps 1 to 7 unti you have resuts for 3 maggots. If a maggot stops moving, remove it and repeat the tria with another maggot. You wi need to decide for yoursef: how to determine the centre of the fiter paper how to determine when a maggot changes direction.

Suggest why this was important. 2 You were tod to pace a maggot at the centre of the fiter paper (step 2 and step 4). 2(a) Why was it important to pace the maggot at the centre of the fiter paper? 2(b) How did you determine the centre of the fiter paper? 3 You used a teaspoon to pace a maggot on the fiter paper (step 2). It woud not have been appropriate to use forceps for this. Suggest why.

Describe what you counted as a change of direction. 5 You were tod to turn the fiter paper over before repacing the maggot (step 4). Suggest why this was important. 6 In this task, it is an advantage to record the number of changes of direction made by the same maggot in ordinary aboratory ight and in reduced ight. Expain why it is an advantage to use the same maggot. 7 In brighter ight, maggots usuay make fewer changes of direction and thus reach the edge of the fiter paper sooner.
