2 Instructions Manual Note from the Founder Samara Mahindra I know what you have been through and I know how it feels. I also know that I could not sit back and watch heartache, pain, suffering, anxiety, confusion and complete helplessness for any longer. I know that I wanted to create something, anything that would make you feel better. That would ve made my mother feel better and that would probably make many more who are unfortunately on their way to being diagnosed, feel better. According to me healing doesn t happen when treatment is administered, it happens now. When your body is trying its best to recuperate, regenerate and restore health. This is where you make a lifestyle change. This is where not just one therapy or treatment shines as the magic pill but where an integration of various complementary therapies works in conjunction together for the strongest recovery. So, my team and I decided to create just that and it gives us such joy to now be able to provide you with the right tools and resources to help you recover by making you physically, mentally, spiritually and emotionally stronger in the process. Moreover, many don t have access to world renowned specialists, due to costs, availability, accessibility or just unaware of their existence, therefore we at CARER we want to change that by bringing them to you and helping you take healing into your own hands. No one knows your body better than you. You will learn important facts about nutrition and lifestyle, movement, meditation, coping with stress, genetic counselling, dealing with the side effects of treatment and many other important factors and tools to recover to the best of your capability. All the complementary therapies involved in this program work together in trying to achieve just that. Each therapy is an extremely important component of healing and without any definitive promises or cures we hope to help you decrease your risk of relapse, manage symptoms, relieve stress, enhance quality of life, improve your outcomes post treatment and provide you with a sense of empowerment by teaching you how to heal yourself. 2

3 Who the program is for Age Although the content is useful for everyone, we recommend an age of 15 years and above to fully utilize all the elements of the program. No matter the age, it is essential for the patient to have doctor s clearance before practicing the yoga therapy sessions. CARER is catered to both genders. Diagnosis The program is created for all types of cancers. We found it necessary to cater to everyone and not discriminate between any types of cancers as the therapies offered are helpful no matter what. Having said that, it s important to note that there are some types of cancers that have a greater benefit from such therapies than others. Prognosis The CARER Program are for those who have been given an all clear, no evidence of disease (NED) and or are in remission. This program however can be useful for palliative or terminal patients. You are also welcome to use the program during treatment. Please check with your doctor first. 3

4 How to use the program Before starting the program, carefully go through all the reading materials, safety instructions, contraindications, disclaimers and the entire instructions manual, so you are well aware of the safety requirements and procedures. Program Outline CARER is essentially a cancer recovery program that consolidates invaluable information and healing therapies from the best in the field of holistic health and integrative medicine. CARER serves as an all rounded platform that targets body, mind and soul so you are provided with the essential tools in recovering from cancer. CARER also connects you to on-ground and personalized home care services. The program is an all rounded complete recovery program using online accessibility and on-ground personalized services and support. 4

5 Kicking Off CARER is made of 2 segments- MY PROGRAM & KNOWLEDGE BASE. These are discussed below: MY PROGRAM- You will see level 1 level 5 and each level consists of an Health Coaching audio clip, Nutrition video, Yoga video, Meditation video and Counselling video. This is allocated between each day and as you click each day open, you are advised on what to do for that day. Here is a summary of what all your videos and audio clips entails: 1. Holistic Health Coach Audio clip a. An audio clip for you to sit back, relax and listen to the advice from your personal Holistic Health Coach. 2. Nutrition & Lifestyle Coach Information video a. Your nutrition and lifestyle coach gives you a well-versed insight into food and dietary habits to follow and the important nutrition factors to keep in mind while recovering. b. You can connect with your personalized nutritionist from here. 3. Counselling Information video a. Your counsellor focuses on the various tools, coping mechanisms and ways in which to deal with stress efficiently with yourself and your environment. b. You can connect with your personalized nutritionist from here. 4. Yoga Therapy Practice video a. The yoga practice is one that you follow by watching the yoga practitioner on the video and doing the practice along with him/her. b. Yoga needs to be practiced for at least 12 weeks. 5. Mindfulness Meditation Practice video a. Similar to the yoga practice, listen to the meditation and follow instructions while the practitioner puts you through a beautiful and relaxing meditation. 5

6 b. Meditation needs to be practiced for at least 12 weeks. Instructions are the near video. We do recommend that you watch the yoga and meditation videos before practicing. This is to give you an understanding of what to expect and prepare you for the practice. KNOWLEDGE BASE- Knowledge is all about providing you with all the credible and right information you require to help you forward. We strive to enrich your knowledge and learning on living a healthier life post cancer. Here you will find a wealth of information from credible sources, an exercise chart, grooming videos and so on. Learn and enjoy! What you will achieve Through nutrition, we aim to help educate you about various dietary habits and the foods that can help you recover better. The yoga and meditations are practice tutorials that focus on physical and mental strength of your body and mind and Counselling is an insight into the importance of coping with emotions and stress. The additional materials and health coaching segments are there for the purpose of making your healing journey an easier one. The entire program is designed to target all areas of strengthening you physically, mentally and emotionally and provides you with tools to recover to optimal health. Although this cannot be guaranteed because everyone is different and each person s recovery varies, but we do promise that if this is followed as instructed, you will experience a sense of empowerment by taking control of your life and gain more knowledge than many others. Remember to get a clearance from your healthcare practitioner before starting any movement-based therapies, such as the yoga therapy and Lymphedema Exercise Chart. The Props Required The props needed to follow the program are listed below: Yoga Mat Yoga Brick Cushion Bolster Candle stand and candle *IMPORTANT NOTE FOR YOGA SAFTEY: All the postures must be performed without the use of excessive force. Practice all the asanas as gentle as possible. Holding postures may start from 5 seconds and gradually increase to seconds depending on your body condition and practice. Yoga practice or any exercise program can only start six weeks post surgery and with the permission of your doctor. Your doctor has to give an all clear before you start any movement practice. 7

8 Please make sure that you are physically fit for certain asanas as they may involve some movement that you may not be ready to undertake just yet. Please avoid Naukasana if you have had recent surgery on your abdomen or chest region. Do not practice this until it is completely healed. Please keep in mind that the minimum time frame for this program is 12 weeks which you can extend to a longer period if you are taking it slowly. Repeat the asanas according to your capability, if you can accomplish more sets, we recommend that you do it while listening to your body. Please ensure you don t practice the yoga and meditation on a full stomach. Wait for at least 2+ hours post a meal before practicing. If your stomach is very empty, then you can have a fruit before the practice. Please stop any practice if it is extremely uncomfortable or causing you any kind of pain. If pain persists, please consult your healthcare practitioner immediately. Lastly, enjoy the process and welcome it as your doorway to a healthy and happy life ahead. *CONTRAINDICATIONS OF THE ASANAS VAJRASANA People with extreme knee and ankle pain or injury should not attempt this asana. CHAKKICHALANASANAN 8

9 Do not practice this asana if you are pregnant, have low blood pressure, extreme lower back pain due to slipped disc, headaches or migraine, or had a recent abdominal surgery, such as for active hernia. KATICHAKRASANA Avoid practicing Standing Spinal Twist (Katichakrasana) during pregnancy, or if you have hernia, slip disc, or have had an abdominal surgery recently. NAUKASANCHALANASANA Avoid if you are suffering from Sciatica, Slipped disc and Hernia. TRIKONASANA Avoid doing this pose if you are suffering from migraine, diarrhea, low or high blood pressure, or neck and back injuries (those with high blood pressure may do this pose but without raising their hand overhead, as this may further raise the blood pressure). ARDHAKATICHAKRASANA Those with abdominal and hip injury must avoid this pose. BADDHAKONASANA Sciatica patients should avoid this practice. VAKRASANA This asana is also not recommended for people suffering from ulcer and hernia. PAVANAMUKTASANA KRIYA Avoid practicing Wind-Relieving Pose (Pawanmuktasana) if you are facing the following health issues: high blood pressure, heart problem, hyperacidity, hernia, slipped disc, testicle disorder, menstruation, neck and back problems, and after the second trimester of pregnancy. SUPTA MATSYENDRASANA 9

10 Avoid practicing this pose if you have a recent or chronic injury to your knees or hips. MARJARIASANA & STRETCH Avoid practicing this pose if you have a recent or chronic injury to your knees, hips or neck. VEERABHADRASANA II People who have had recent or chronic injury to the hips, knees or shoulders should avoid this asana. PARIVRITTA JANUSIRSHASANA Those who have asthma, diarrhea and knee, hips, arms or shoulder injuries are advised strongly to stay away from this practice. SETUBANDHASANA Avoid doing this pose if you are suffering from severe neck and back injuries. BHUJANGASANA Avoid practicing if you are pregnant, have fractured ribs or wrists, or recently undergone abdominal surgeries, such as for hernia. Also avoid if you suffer from Carpel Tunnel Syndrome. PARSHVAKONASANA Avoid doing this pose if you suffer from any form of headaches, insomnia or any other conditions related to blood pressure or hypertension. If you have chronic neck pain or neck problems, you should skip the step of trying to look at the palm of the extended hand and just continue to look straight while doing the pose. 10
