Korean Medicine o Traditional Korean medicine developed with the influence of Traditional Chinese medicine. o Before the 6th century AD, Buddhist priests from China introduced Chinese medicine to Korea and Japan. o Travelling priests disseminated Chinese medical knowledge throughout these countries more widely during the Tang dynasty ( AD). o Its techniques in treatment and diagnosis are similar to other traditional medicine.

Korean Medicine o In the Samguk Yusa (legends & history of the three kingdoms of Korea) book where the founding myth of Korea is recorded, there is a story of a tiger and a bear who wanted to reincarnate in human form and who ate wormwood and garlic. o In this fable, which was written around the time of Samguk Yusa, wormwood and garlic are described as 'eatable medicine', showing that, even in primitive times when medicine was mainly rituals and incantations, medicinal herbs were given as curatives in Korea.

Korean Medicine o Moreover, the fact that wormwood and garlic are not found in ancient Chinese herbology shows that traditional Korean medicine developed unique practices. o In the period of the Three Kingdoms Chinese Medicine and Indian Medicine were adopted in Korea, thereby setting up the foundation of original Korean medicine. o In the Goguryeo dynasty ( ) traditional medicine from the Silla dynasty (57BC-935AD) and medicine from India as influenced by Buddhism were adopted.

Korean Medicine o By the time the Yuan Dynasty ( ) was established in China, Korean medicine had developed its own techniques. o This was because hostile states in southern Manchuria at Korea's borders prevented the exchange of medical knowledge between the two countries. o More investigation of domestic herbs took place, and the result was the publication of numerous books on domestic herbs.

Korean Medicine o Korean medicine flourished in the Joseon Dynasty ( ) and a book named Eui Bang Ryu Chwi was published which consolidated knowledge from books on Chinese medicine. After this, many books on Korean medicine were published. o In the early 20th century, the colonisation of Korea by Japan brought medicine from the West and there was a period of decline for traditional Korean medicine. o However, by the end of World War II and subsequent independence from Japan, traditional Korean medical practices regained their popularity.

Korean Medicine o Korean medicine considers decreased vital energy and a weakened immune system to be the cause of disease. o According to the philosophy of Korean medicine, an illness is not a problem with a particular part of the body but rather an imbalance of the life forces in the whole body. o Treatment is aimed at curing disease by strengthening the immune system and restoring harmony within the body.

Japanese medicine is rooted in mythology and the indigenous religion, Shintoism (meaning 'way of the gods'), which holds that everything in nature has a soul or spirit. Japanese Medicine Sourced from the public domain:

Japanese Medicine o It was believed that the deities responsible for creation produced a sun goddess, who became the supreme Shinto deity. o Ancient people are thought to have evolved various offering and purification rituals in her honour, to ensure good crops and good health. o Illness was attributed to impurity, malevolent spirits and disgruntled deities. The earliest healing traditions, described in the Kojiki (record of ancient matters), were purification and bathing rituals, exorcism and herbal remedies.

Japanese Medicine o Medical ideas brought to Japan by Korean and Chinese monks and physicians in the 5th and 6th centuries, and European missionaries in the 16th century, were studied and adapted until unique Japanese traditions evolved. o Japanese medicine has borrowed from Chinese medicine the concepts of yin, yang, the five elements and qi ('ki'). o Japanese medicine developed its own emphasis, variations and innovations in terms of medical theory and practice, and integrated these with Shinto and Buddhist ideas.

Japanese Medicine o The concept of ki is central and is incorporated in many Japanese words: genki means healthy, while byoki means disease. o Ki flows in the body through meridian channels and the Japanese have identified several additional meridian pathways.

Japanese Medicine o Disease patterns are described in terms of two main parameters, kyo (deficiency) and jitsu (excess), with kyo being by far the most important and the main focus of diagnosis and treatment. o Cleanliness and purity are seen as the keys to health alongside correct eating, behaviour, respiration, exercise and spiritual devotion.

Japanese Medicine Diagnosis o Observation (bo-shin) of the tongue, face and gait, and palpation (setsu-shin) are the two most important forms of diagnosis. o Palpation includes pulse taking, similar to Chinese medicine but different in technique, and also a uniquely Japanese form of abdominal diagnosis. o Other diagnostic methods include listening and smelling (bunshin) and questioning (mon-shin).

Japanese Medicine o The aim of treatment is to bring one's life back into balance and in harmony with the laws of nature. o This is achieved through adapting the home environment, diet, breathing and other exercises, hydrotherapy and spiritual exercises and by using therapies to treat underlying kyo (deficiency).

Japanese Medicine o Exposure to the beauty of nature is considered paramount and home environments are designed to be calm and uncluttered. o Spa baths are popular; many are outdoors and use plants such as ginger to make warming baths in winter. o Dietary therapy recommends eating seasonal foods and balancing foods from land, sea and mountain.

Japanese Medicine o Herbal medicine (kampo) is highly evolved and has become mainstream. o Unique forms of massage, manipulation and acupuncture also have been developed. Energetic healing, including reiki, is popular. o Japanese medicine isn't well known outside Japan, but certain Japanese therapies have become popular in the West, especially shiatsu and reiki. o Some Western acupuncturists use Japanese techniques.
