2 WE (Western and Eastern) Integrated Philosophy The Canadian Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine s (CITCM) unique programs integrate Western and Eastern knowledge to healthcare for an enriched learning experience. Our students study the theory and modalities of Eastern medicine such as acupuncture, herbal prescriptions, moxibustion, cupping modalities and Qi Gong exercises in a clinical environment. They also study Western medicine such as anatomy, nutrition and massage. Marketing and business are included in the curriculum. The knowledge of our WE Philosophy prepares our graduates for a thriving career in complementary and alternative healthcare. Each student has the knowledge and insight to work in partnership with other health practitioners, to develop accurate assessment and determine appropriate treatment recommendations. As Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners we recognize: That to be aware of our own health and lead a lifestyle that fosters and supports our own wellbeing, paired with a willingness to help others is as important and integral to our success in this health care field, as our knowledge and skills; Understanding the philosophy of Chinese Medicine is fundamental in that its framework is our guiding principle towards understanding the individual, both physiologically and psychologically; This deeper understanding allows the practitioner to determine the best strategies to assist and promote the body s natural healing process; The origin of Traditional Chinese Medicine is based on both ancient philosophy and ancient science. The present developments of Traditional Chinese Medicine have allowed for interaction and integration with modern science and technology that will lead Chinese Medicine into a new and expanded phase of achievement; and The health of body, mind and spirit are interrelated; restoring and maintaining health and wellness means achieving health and harmony in all three. 5 History of the Canadian Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine When Dr. Xia Cheng established the Canadian Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine (CITCM) in Calgary, Alberta, she did so knowing that happiness and success are often achieved by reaching out and helping those in need. Dr. Cheng wanted to share her knowledge and passion with students interested in Eastern philosophies and the wisdom for healing the mind, body and soul to help build healthier and happier communities. Choosing a career path is never a simple task and deciding where to study is equally challenging. Dr. Cheng recognized this and was determined to facilitate an environment where she could offer training in TCM and Acupuncture so that others who share her passion could choose to learn with like-minded individuals. As a result of Dr. Cheng s efforts, a college, CITCM, was created in 2004 where students could work together to learn in a collaborative environment. Under the direction of experienced practitioners, students are able to share their compassion and kindness with one another and practice their skills in a supportive clinical environment. Governed under the College and Association of Acupuncturists of Alberta and the Alberta Enterprise and Advanced Education Ministry, the Canadian Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine is an internationally recognized, post-secondary institution committed to educating students in the art and science of Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). As one of Canada s premier TCM colleges, CITCM s curriculum challenges the best and brightest minds, combining theory with hands-on practice, as well as compassionate community focus for a rich educational environment. Graduates of CITCM are among the most competent practitioners of Eastern medicine in North America and in many cases are qualified to practice internationally. 21 About Massage Therapy Massage Therapy is a profession that is rapidly growing. Depending on your location, it is often difficult to find a Massage Therapist to book an appointment with, even then you may have to wait a week or more to receive a massage treatment. Healthy lifestyles are becoming the societal norm and the interest in natural health care is developing in a similar fashion. Massage Therapy is a component of this shift to wellness. People are seeking ways to eliminate pain and stress from their lives, speed up recovery from injuries, or even increase their flexibility. As a massage professional you can expect to earn between $60 and $100 per hour, averaging $80 while working in a relaxing, positive, and low stress environment. You should expect to see no more than 4 to 6 patients a day and often you will have the opportunity to schedule your appointments around your availability. Massage therapists may work in many environments, including: Massage clinics; Acupuncture clinics; A clinic or health centre shared with other healthcare professionals (e.g., chiropractors, physical therapists, etc.); Sports clubs, spas or some hotels; Sports massage centres; Industrial or corporate work sites; and Owning their own massage clinic. MAKE YOUR PATH Massage therapists have many opportunities to work for others or themselves which allows opportunity for a massage therapist to balance their lives, take care of children or elderly, or continue with further education in other health care professions. Many massage therapists come from other career paths such as business, engineering or western health care to move away from the stress or travelling of one job to a career in massage with the emphasizes of balance and peace. Massage is a profession that offers both personal and professional satisfaction where clients appreciate what you do and, at the end of a massage appointment, both the therapist and the client will feel positive and rewarded. The WE Integrated Massage Therapy Diploma program is a unique and comprehensive approach to massage therapy taught by qualified, expert instructors that prepares students to write the Alberta Massage Therapy Registration Exam. The Program is two years in length which is consistent with the standard massage requirements within the industry. The curriculum consists of over 25 courses and practicums allowing for students to become educated, confident, competent and diversified professional massage therapists upon their graduation. For interested individuals who are not looking to practice massage in a clinical setting, the WE Integrated Massage Therapy program has a 1 year (1113 hours) which gives all of the basics of massage and allows students to practice and be licenced within the City of Calgary. Those who graduate from the 1113 hours program will not have the requirements to be covered under most benefit or insurance plans. The We Integrated Massage Therapy diploma teaches a method of practice that is unique to the CITCM College of Massage. The We Integrated philosophy merges the best practices of both Western and Eastern massage principles of acupressure and other non-instrusive elements of TCM such as cupping and moxa. Graduates of the two year program will have a range of skills to assist in the treatment of their patients. If you are interested in finding out more on how to become a Massage Therapist please contact the Canadian Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine College of Massage Registrar by phone at (403) or at kenbarrett.citcm@gmail.com CITCM Program Guide Fulfilled Learning 18

24 CURRENT STUDENTS ALUMNI Testimonials The teachers at CITCM impressed me with their knowledge, while being approachable and helpful mentors and supervisors. CITCM has show a commitment to development and trying each year to make the courses and education better. The expansion toward community outreach with student clinics being held not only at the school but also at the Calgary Drop In Centre was invaluable to me. And the opportunity to go to a hospital in China for three months to top off my education will be the perfect ending to four years of study. The friendships I have made with both staff and students are lifelong. I have had a memorable four years and I would choose CITCM again if i had to do it over again. Melissa Wecker - CITCM Alumni My plan is to achieve my degree, Doctor of TCM, and to continue taking supplementary courses here at CITCM. The curriculum is exceptional compared to other schools and the teachers here are highly qualified with a vast amount of experience. They are truly passionate about this profession and with giving their students the best education possible. I enjoy the friendly, caring atmosphere. My classes and clinical experience have been interesting and fun!!! Now that I am in the program I would have to say I am satisfied with my choice of school. I find that the instructors have made the material easy to understand and also have a focus on practical information along with academic. The instructors are passionate about what they know and what they do. I m glad I took the time to explore several schools as CITCM was the last one I found and has been my first choice. Joseph Staples 3RD Year Tricia Toner - CITCM Alumni With a background in Western medicine, I felt my life needed a change and that Traditional Chinese Medicine could offer me both the career and philosophy that I was looking for. When researching the many schools that offer courses in TCM I was very impressed with CITCM and since moving to Calgary from England I have not been disappointed. Andrew Dulcamara, R.Ac. 27 Faculty Our senior instructors in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture hold Master s or Ph.D. degrees. Other instructors are usually doctors or other highly achieved professionals who bring exceptional experience to the curriculum rounding out our desire to implement, incorporate and integrate a traditional Chinese medicine philosophy with Western medical techniques and knowledge. The professionals include a diversity of health care practitioners such as physicians, naturopaths, dentists, chiropractors and physiotherapists who love teaching and have a holistic and integrated approach towards their practice. 28 FAQ Frequently Asked Questions Are the CITCM programs accredited? CITCM is accredited and licensed under the Private Vocational Schools Act of Alberta and the Acupuncture Committee of Alberta Health and Wellness; CITCM is governed under the College and Association of Acupuncturists of Alberta; CITCM s acupuncture and doctor of TCM curriculum is recognized by Shandong University of TCM, with an additional 1 year internship at SUTCM, graduates will be granted a Bachelor Degree of TCM from SUTCM; CITCM WE Integrated Massage Program is accredited by Natural Health Practitioners of Canada, graduates can be registered under NHPC as Massage Therapists (Discipline) and Tui Na (Specialist) practitioners; Graduates of the 1113 hour WE Massage program are qualified to apply for Massage Licenses issued by the City of Calgary; How long per day will I have to study? TESTIMONIAL: The instructors are very knowledgeable and share their experience with the students. This depends mainly on the student. On average most students spend approximately 4 hours in class and about 2 hours studying and completing assignments after normal class time. In addition to class time, there is a total of between 4 to 12 flexible scheduled clinical training hours per week. Can I work while going to school? Yes. Currently lectures for the Acupuncture and DTCM program are scheduled in the morning until 12 noon. WE Massage programs are scheduled from 12:30 to 5:30 pm. These half day schedules allow students to obtain part-time employment during the school year to help with their finances. When I complete the program can I run my own clinic? Yes. That is the route that many graduates have taken and CITCM will help train you for that through the business courses that are part of the curriculum. Many graduates also find positions in other acupuncture and TCM clinics as well as with chiropractors and other health professionals. How much should I expect to earn when I start practicing? There are many graduates that are earning between $60,000 and $80,000 within the first several years of graduating. Much of this depends on what avenue of employment the graduate chooses to follow. 25 CITCM Program Guide

29 Is there a residence at the school? Currently, CITCM has an agreement with the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) for students attending CITCM to also live in the SAIT student residence. The residence is approximately 10 blocks away from the school making it within walking distance. Additionally, SAIT also has a C-train and public transit station on site. It is located next to North Hill mall which contains a Safeway and various department stores. Each unit has its own kitchen so that students are able to cook their own meals or to purchase meals at many of the restaurants in the area. For those who wish to live in an apartment many of the students are able to find accommodations within walking distance of the school to minimize transportation costs. FAQ When I am a graduate, can I practice anywhere in Canada? Yes you can. You will have to pass the Pan Canadian TCM Acupuncturist registration exam to be licensed as an acupuncturist in Alberta. Under existing provincial laws you will also be able to practice acupuncture in all the other Canadian provinces as well. As a graduate from the CITCM, am I able to practice in the United States? CITCM graduates will be able to practice in United States if they pass the required licensing exam. There will be an approval process to accept CITCM to take the licensing exam but the curriculum meets the requirement for the licensing exam in United States. Will CITCM administration help with foreign student applications? TESTIMONIAL: There is a very positive learning environment here. We will provide all the required documentation to students to apply for a student visa once the applicant has been accepted into the program. SAIT Residences CITCM Program Guide 26
