III. Selecting Your Market Wether For Show Questions? Purdue Goat Club
IV. Showmanship
IV. Showmanship Consider: Presentation Moving Setting Up The showman (That s YOU!) Shifting and Handling
IV. Showmanship Presentation Attention divided equally between goat and judge Drawing attention away from goat takes away from presentation and is referred to as over showing Neglecting the goat or judge will result in lower placing When the goat looks good, you re doing well!
IV. Showmanship Moving Goat head up to the point of allowing for level top line Speed is one step at a time that makes the goat appear comfortable Leave spacing for the judge or another goat! Stay in line!!
IV. Showmanship Setting Up Feet out on the corners giving as wide a look as is comfortable for the goat (SQUARE) Set the end closest to the judge first Head up and stay in line Profile = SIDE VIEW! Set and leave! If the fix is little, leave it, because the process of a reset gives the impression you are struggling
IV. Showmanship Setting Up Keep body in line Profile view
IV. Showmanship The Showman Every movement is done slowly and with purpose Looking effortless is the ultimate compliment Give the appearance of being relaxed and enjoying the trip. A confident look convinces judges
IV. Showmanship A never hurts!!
IV. Showmanship Shifting and Handling Majority of the time showing is spent on the left shoulder of the goat Shifting to accommodate the judge s view should be done from left shoulder to right shoulder and back slowly maintaining consistent pressure on chain to maintain the setup. During handling, move in front of the goat without bracing, holding the chain and head if necessary.
IV. Showmanship PRACTICE! Time, practice, and hard work to be successful! Ask QUESTIONS!!
IV. Showmanship Cardinal Sins in the ring: Going behind the goat when switching sides! Letting the goat get loose. Letting the goat lay down. Lack of or excessive eye contact. Having a dirty goat. Having a wild and crazy goat translates the amount of time and work you have put in to preparing..
IV. Showmanship Be prepared to answer questions about your goat!! How much does your goat weigh? What breed? (Percentage if cross) How old? What is it s diet? Goat Parts Cuts of Meat Breeds What s happening in the market Prevention Techniques/General Husbandry
IV. Showmanship A smile and good eye contact will go a long way in the show ring
