Traditional Asian Medicine Model of Health Chapter 16 ABT: The use of pressure and manipulation to treat the body, mind, and spirit (Asian body Treatment) Energy is central concept in Asian medicine Includes shiatsu and ayurveda 1 2 Energy Yin and Yang Energy is life force that creates and binds together all things and phenomena in the universe Energy demonstrates itself as movement and vibration and forms magnetic fields The Tai Ji symbol represents yin and yang formed by a complete circle and means completeness The circle is divided into two sides symbolizing duality, or the dynamic struggle between opposites (black and white) From Anderson SK: The practice of shiatsu. St. Louis, 2008, Mosby
Yin and Yang (Cont.) On the yang or sunny side of the hill, more light, warmth, activity, and movement exist On the yin or shadowy side of the hill, it is darker, the temperature is cooler They mutually create and balance each other Health is a dynamic equilibrium between yin and yang Pain as yin: A feeling of cold, weakness, weight, and lethargy Pain as yang: A feeling of heat, agitation, and restlessness To treat, use a bit of the opposite quality to bring balance Channels Energy circulates through pathways in the body called channels or meridians Channels are the connections of the material body to the nonmaterial body Channels distribute, balance, and connect the ki of the interior organs with the surface body Ki circulates through the channels in a fixed direction, making one continuous channel 6 5 Chinese Clock Twelve Regular Channels Are located bilaterally and are symmetric Named after associated organ systems Occur in yin and yang pairs Pages in Salvo Text 7 8 2
Lung Channel Large Intestine Channel Yin organ Lung (LU): 3-5 am Metal Sense organ nose Emotion grief Yang organ Large Intestine (LI): 5 7 am 9 10 Stomach Channel Spleen Channel Yang organ Stomach (ST): 7 to 9 AM EARTH MOUTH PENSIVENESS Yin organ Spleen (SP): 9 to 11 AM
Heart Channel Small Intestine Channel Yin organ Yang organ Small Intestine (SI): 1 to 3 PM Heart (HT): 11 AM to 1 PM FIRE TONGUE JOY Bladder Channel Yang organ Bladder (BL): 3 to 5 PM Kidney Channel Yin organ Kidneys (KID): 5 to 7 PM WATER EARS FEAR

Extraordinary Vessels Reservoirs for regular channels (8) Store ki to preserve balance Examples are: Conception (Ren) Governing (Du) Penetrating (Chong) Belt (Dai) Tsubos Points along channels where energy concentrates and surfaces Identified by the name of the channel plus numbers that increase in sequential number from the origin to the end of the channel pathway Example: SP1, SP2, SP3, and so forth Distance measured in cun, which is the body inch unit Each cun measured by the width of client s own thumb knuckle Used to find tsubo location Kyo and jitsu: Terms used to describe the quantities of energy or activity in a tsubo Kyo means empty, yin, depleted, or not enough ki in the tsubo Jitsu means full, yang, excessive, or too much ki in the tsubo Divides organ system into yin and yang Zang Yin organs Tend to be solid Fu Yang organs Tend to be hollow Five Phases (Elements) Earth Wood Fire Metal Water
