Traditional Tobacco Medicinal Ancient genus Willows Not universal Colonization Effects

Use of Commercial Tobacco by American Indians No ceremonial relationship with commercial use, or the ceremonial covenant is broken Thus, a mutually-abusive relationship is established This results in addiction and adverse health outcomes Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for AIs Lung cancer is the leading cause of death for cancers in AIs

Symptom: AI/AN Smoking Rates 31.4% AI/AN 21.0% Whites 20.6% for African-Americans (CDC, 2011) Bemidji area (IL, IN, MI, MN, WI) >50%. (CDC; 1996) 58% (CDC Behavior Risk Factor Surveillance 2010)

Menominee Qualitative Pilot Results: What role if any, can traditional or sacred use of tobacco play in helping Menominee quit smoking? I would go back to our basic teaching that we were told by our elder, if you pray sincerely with your tobacco your prayers will be answered, and not enough people pray with tobacco today. There are some people that don t know how to pray because they have not been taught that way, but a lot of people don t believe in the strength of the tobacco when you pray with that, that the Creator will listen to you and he will respond to whatever you ask him for in some way. Some people would tell us be careful how you pray because sometimes you are praying for the wrong thing or your prayers aren t answered in a not-so-good way but just say your prayers carefully and ask for the right thing. As I think we get older we realize what that means and how it has happened to us and others in a negative way and we avoid doing that again.

Menominee Qualitative Pilot Results: What role if any, can traditional or sacred use of tobacco play in helping Menominee quit smoking?...tobacco is sacred, it s supposed to be used in a sacred way That s why the Great Spirit gave it to us and to use it like people do around here, you know, that ain t right. I know that when I was smoking, you know. You re supposed to use it in a sacred way.

Lessons from Spider I want to share with you a dream...a great spider came to hurt our people. One by one, our elders and even our young would be bitten. Some would make their spirit journey, leaving their families before their time. No matter what the Tribal leaders tried, they could not rid our people of this evil being...the spider was also attacking non-indian people. But they could not get rid of the spider either. Then our leaders...saw that by working together they could take on this scourge that was leaving so many families in tears...this dream tells us that only by working together can we rid our families of this pain. -Anishinaabe Spiritual Leader American Indian Cancer Foundation, Annual Report 2020 (2010), p. 15
