From the Author This book is designed to provide a list of acupoint treatments for patients suffering particular signs and symptoms. The information is presented in an easy-to-read format that means the practitioner spends less time constructing a treatment and more time performing one. As a quick reference guide it does not explain why the points were chosen for the different treatments. However, I have used over 150 sources to compile the Patterns of Disharmony and the Main acupoints sections. The reader is thus able to learn more about the treatment for a disorder by looking in the referenced texts (see the Bibliography). Research has been gathered from both modern and ancient texts during 15+ years in the industry and from my lectures at the Australian College of Natural Medicine (ACNM), Australian Institute of Applied Sciences (AIAS), Southern Cross University (SCU) and Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT). Treatments for 1000 Western signs/symptoms/disease states are listed alphabetically in the tables, which also include treatment principles to adopt in certain situations. Basic signs and symptoms include memory loss, nappy rash and headache. Disease states include hepatitis, irritable bowel syndrome and hypertension. Treatment principles include inducing labour, reducing lactic acid buildup and regulating metabolism. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) actions are also incorporated in this book. Terms such as Liver Yang Rising, Dian Ji, Internal Wind, Sanjiao, Qi Stagnation, etc, may be unfamiliar to some readers who do not have a TCM background. Further information about these terms can be found in the table notes or in quite a few of the texts in the Bibliography. Whilst TCM actions are not exactly equivalent to signs and symptoms, they are relevant for any text that attempts to list treatments encountered in a clinical setting. They are essentially the cornerstone of any treatment planned by a TCM practitioner and are terms that describe groups of signs and symptoms that patients may present with in the clinic. In addition there are treatment tables for 85 TCM Patterns of Disharmony. These enable you to construct a true TCM treatment that has all the elements learnt in diagnosis, without having to search through lots of different sources to find the information. The Channel and Point Diagrams section at the back of the book shows the locations of all of the acupoints. 5
This text also contains a section on Sound Healing with Tuning Forks that includes intervals for 100 of the most common disorders. Good luck in your studies and clinical practice. I hope you will find this book useful in your endeavours as a TCM student and practitioner. David Hartmann 6
What s in This Book 7
Contraindications and Cautions Ensures the student or practitioner is aware of any concerns when using the points. Most are fine to use, but there may be limits to the depth/angle they can be needled. If the use of tuning forks or acupressure massage is the preferred treatment choice, it is only the contraindication during pregnancy that needs to be addressed. 8
Patterns of Disharmony Includes, for all the Patterns, the typical Western disease names they marry-up with and the main acupoints (with notes) as well as the secondary acupoints. Contains a generic list of points for each channel as well as for each organ. These points are good to use when you know which organ or channel is diseased, but are unsure exactly how it is diseased. Many point combinations have also been annotated, with explanations of why they work so well together. 9
TCM Actions and Western Signs, Symptoms and Disease States Comprises 1000 disorders and acupoints, and the locations of the acupoints are shown in the diagrams in the Channel and Point Diagrams section. Includes a column for Patterns of Disharmony. Occasionally there is one Pattern, but most often there are two given for each disorder, and there may be other possible Patterns that can present in a clinical setting. For example, a patient may present with acid reflux. My recommendation is that they are likely to be diagnosed as either Stomach Fire Blazing or Rebellious Qi in the Stomach. However I have, on occasion, also treated acid reflux patients with Liver Invading the Spleen and Stomach. The Patterns listed are the most common ones seen in the clinic or the ones that the majority of references suggest. Incorporates notes which advise if additional or alternative therapy needs to be considered. 10
Appendices Contain further information regarding the Channels and Organs that may be involved in an injury, the types (e.g. Shi or Xu ) of signs/symptoms and the Patterns underlying disease states as well as discussion of the various TCM Elements (e.g. Wood and Metal) and of some complex conditions such as paralysis and schizophrenia. 11
Sound Healing with Tuning Forks An introduction to tuning forks is included. Their rich resonance and vibration connects with, and supports, the body s ability to heal itself. For more information, please refer to the relevant section in this text. 12
Bibliography Includes over 150 references that were used in writing this book and it could not have been written without every single one of them, even if some appear a little obscure or perhaps irrelevant. They have been listed alphabetically by the author s last name and also numbered sequentially for ease of citation. (Refer to the How to Use this Book section for an explanation of the citation of references, notes and footnotes.) 13
Channel and Point Diagrams Provides a complete set of channel diagrams including all of the acupoints. The diagrams in this section fold out, so that the reader can have the text open to the list of disorders/acupoints and simultaneously view them in the relevant diagram. 14
How to Use This Book This book is best used as a quick reference guide. 1. Take a case history and make a diagnosis. The focus of your treatment may be guided by the patient s case history and previous diagnoses from other health professionals. Complete your own diagnosis so that you have a basis for treatment in place. Practitioners are required by law to complete an initial visit assessment and record the follow-ups. 2. Look up the disorder and/or look up the TCM Pattern of Disharmony. Find the appropriate acupoints for either (or both) to help compose your treatment plan. If you cannot find the disorder you are looking for, try to think of alternative names it might be listed under. For example, bed wetting is listed under B and under N for nocturnal enuresis, but not under W for wetting the bed. 3. Find out more from the notes, appendices and references. Many of the entries in the Patterns of Disharmony and TCM Actions and Western Signs, Symptoms and Disease States tables include sequentially numbered explanatory notes cited in parentheses, e.g. (1). Appendices containing additional information come after the TCM Actions and Western Signs, Symptoms and Disease States section and are cited in the notes as Appendix A.1, A.2, Y.1, Y.2. References in the Bibliography are listed alphabetically by author s last name and are also numbered. They are cited in the tables in brackets, e.g. page 133 in the book by Lade (reference number 57) would be cited as [57:133]. 4. Quickly find the point locations. Fold out the diagrams at the back to check the locations of the points required. 5. Combine acupoints for disorders and TCM patterns. 15
To take this a step further, you can combine approaches from the different sections of the book to create a more holistic treatment. For example, a patient may present with no appetite. Under Appetite none, the points listed are CV 12, SP 3, SP 6, ST 36 and BL 20. You also see that it is mainly caused by Spleen Xu or Stomach Xu. Your patient has Spleen Qi Xu, so you look up spleen patterns and find Spleen Qi Xu listed with the points SP 6, BL 20, CV 12, LR 13 and ST 36. The points that are on both lists are CV 12, SP 6, ST 36 and BL 20. Now you have a treatment that has encompassed both the poor appetite and the Spleen Qi Xu. The technique is the same regardless of whether you are using acupuncture, tuning forks or acupressure. 16
