ALTERNATIVE MEDICINES AND CANCER THERAPY** Information compiled by Daniel J. Faber, Coordinator of the Warriors+one, a Breakout Group of the Prostate Cancer Canada Network- Ottawa, Ontario.** Alternative Medicine Complementary Medicine Complementary Medicine refers to a group of diverse medical and health care therapies, practices and products used ALONGSIDE Conventional Medicine. The recommended terms are: Complementary & Alternative Medicine (CAM) or Integrative Medicine. Complementary therapies do not treat the TABLE OF CONTENTS Acupuncture Aromatherapy Biofeedback Chiropractic Care Energy Healing Folk Remedy Herbal Medicine Homeopathy Hypnotherapy Imagery Techniques Lifestyle Diet Alternative Medicine is the use of certain medicines and/or treatments INSTEAD of Conventional Medicine to treat diseases and ailments. Alternative medicine is a growing influence in health care today. More and more patients are utilizing both traditional or conventional medicine and some combination of alternative treatments in their search for better health and wellness. Unfortunately, many physicians have relatively little knowledge or experience with the various forms of alternative medicines that are practiced. No alternative cancer treatments have been proved to cure cancer, but alternative medicine options may help you cope with side effects of cancer and cancer treatment, such as fatigue, nausea, pain, etc. Many people with cancer are interested in trying anything that may help them, including alternative cancer treatments. If cancer makes you feel as if you have little control over your health, alternative cancer treatments may offer some feeling of control. But many alternative cancer treatments are unproved and some may even be dangerous. cancer itself. Complementary therapies can be used to help people cope physically and emotionally with cancer and with side effects from cancer treatment. They can also be used to improve your overall health and feeling of well-being. For example, acupuncture to help with nausea caused by chemotherapy is a complementary therapy. Another example is yoga to help you feel more relaxed and sleep better while you are having treatment. Massage Therapy Megavitamins Naturopathy Osteopathy Spiritual Practice Relaxation Techniques Self-help Groups Special Diet Programs Yoga Credits ** This information was presented at a Warriors+one meeting at Maplesoft Centre as a Power Point presentation on March 17, See credits at the end. p 1
Acupuncture Acupuncture is a treatment that involves putting fine needles into the body at particular points. The needles are left in place for a short time and then removed. Acupuncture can help with some physical problems such as pain and feeling sick. It can also help to reduce symptoms such as anxiety. Acupuncture first started in traditional East Asian medicine systems. It became an important part of Chinese medicine about 2000 years ago. But we now know how it works in scientific terms in addition to the original theories. Western medical acupuncture is a modern interpretation of acupuncture based on scientific research. Treatments are given following a medical diagnosis and can be used alongside conventional cancer treatments such as cancer drugs or radiotherapy. Aromatherapy Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils. These oils are the concentrated essences taken from the flowers, fruit, seeds, leaves, root or bark of certain plants. There are more than 400 essential oils. Some are used to make perfumes or cosmetics. Holistic aromatherapy uses oils that are thought to have beneficial properties but only a smallnumber of these are commonly used in people with cancer. Some of the most popular oils include lavender, rosemary, eucalyptus, camomile, marjoram, jasmine, pep item, spermint, lemon, ylang ylang and geranium. Aromatherapists believe that for the general population aromatherapy can boost wellbeing, relieve stress, and help to refresh your body. p 2
B iofeedback Biofeedback is a technique you can use to learn to control your body s functions, such as your heart rate. With biofeedback, you re connected to electrical sensors that help you receive information (feedback) about your body (bio). In essence, biofeedback gives you the power to use your thoughts to control your body, often to help with a health condition or physical performance. Chiropractic Care Chiropractic care emphasizes diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal, especially the spine, under the belief that these disorders affect general health via the nervous system. The main chiropractic treatment technique involves manual therapy especially manipulation of the spine, other joints, and soft tissues; treatment may also include exercises, health and lifestyle counseling. p 3
E nergy Healing Energy Healing provides powerful healing for Emotional Challenges, Karmic Issues, Negativity, or other challenges you truly want healed. The Energy of Love is THE most powerful energy available to humanity. Love Healing Energy is what I send to you and through Love you are healed. The energy practitioner listens, sees, and conveys the intuitive messages for healing, then transforms the being matrix into a fullness state. Energy Healing is an increasingly popular and effective form of whole body integrative healing. While variations in energy healing techniques have been used over thousands of years and across many different world cultures, the recent interest and use of energy healing modalities may be attributed to a variety of societal and cultural factors. Increased awareness and accessibility of ancient healing techniques and a shift towards increased personal responsibility and empowerment in healthcare are putting energy healing at the forefront of effective and self empowering healing modalities. Folk Remedy Folk remedy is a treatment to cure a disease or ailment that employs certain spices, vegetables, or other common items. Home remedies may or may not have medicinal properties that treat or cure the disease or ailment in question, as they are typically passed along by laypersons. In some Asian and African countries, up to 80% of the population relies on traditional medicine for their primary health care needs. p 4
Herbal Medicine Herbal medicine, also called botanical medicine or phytomedicine - refers to using a plant s seeds, berries, roots, leaves, bark, or flowers for medicinal purposes. Herbalism has a long tradition of use outside of conventional medicine. It is becoming more mainstream as improvements in analysis and quality control along with advances in clinical research show the value of herbal medicine in the treating and preventing disease. Plants had been used for medicinal purposes long before recorded history. Ancient Chinese and Egyptian papyrus writings describe medicinal uses for plants as early as 3,000 BC. Indigenous cultures (such as African and Native American) used herbs in their healing rituals, while others developed traditional medical systems (such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine) in which herbal therapies were used. Homeopathy Homeopathy is based on the theory of treating like with like. So to treat an illness a homeopathic therapist (homeopath) uses tiny doses of a substance that in large doses would actually cause the symptoms of the illness. The alternative medical system of homeopathy was developed in Germany at the end of the 18th century. Homeopathic remedies are made from plant, mineral and animal substances. They are diluted in water and shaken vigorously many times until there is little, if any, of the original substance left. The water is used to make homeopathic liquid (drops), pills or creams. Homeopaths believe that the original substance somehow leaves a molecular blueprint in the water that triggers your body s healing mechanisms. p 5
Hypnotherapy Hypnotherapy is a therapy that uses hypnosis. You are in a trance like a state where your body is deeply relaxed but your mind is active. We all go into such states of mind naturally in daily life, for example, when daydreaming. The therapy is led by a person called a hypnotherapist. They can use various methods to put you into a trance state. They may speak to you slowly and soothingly. Or they may ask you to look at a fixed object in front of you. In 2005 review of studies into hypnotherapy for treating symptoms in people with researchers carried out a advanced cancer; there were 27 studies but all were small or of poor quality. So it is not possible to tell whether hypnotherapy can help people with advanced cancer. Imagery Techniques Imagery techniques are being used to teach psychophysiological relaxation, alleviate anxiety and depression, relieve physical and psychological symptoms, overcome health-endangering habits, resolve conflicts, and help patients prepare for surgery and tolerate procedures more comfortably. Guided imagery can be considered one of the oldest and most ubiquitous forms of medicine. The healing rituals of various cultures that have persisted over time all have a certain level of clinical efficacy, and while we may attribute these therapeutic benefits to placebo effects, they have real and measurable effects with important implications for our understanding of the healing process. p 6
Lifestyle Diet Lifestyle Diet is a useful treatment to assist people with losing weight, learning how to identify and manage their issues with food, and how to truly create a new lifestyle. The truth is that one of the key building blocks for success is first starting with the right mindset. It s having an understanding and appreciation for the fact that the foods that you were previously eating and the way that you were previously living your life, were causing you to become overweight and unhealthy. Massage Therapy Massage therapy is a system of treatment that works by stroking, kneading, tapping or pressing the soft tissues of the body. It aims to relax you mentally and physically. It has been used for centuries. Massage may concentrate on the muscles, the soft tissues, or on the acupuncture points. There are several types of massage: Swedish massage, aromatherapy massage, deep tissue massage, sports massage, Shiatsu, neuromuscular massage, reflexology and some others. p 7
Megavitamins Megavitamins may be useful treatment for many genetic diseases, or just good insurance to tune up body s metabolism. In a review article in the April issue of The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, U.C. Berkeley s Bruce Ames lists more than 50 genetic diseases successfully treated with high doses of vitamins. Ames found a common thread in the effectiveness of these megavitamin therapies that suggests there may be many more diseases treatable with high-dose vitamins, in particular the eight B vitamins like niacin, thiamine and pyridoxine. Naturopathy Naturopathy or naturopathic medicine is a form of alternative medicine employing a wide array of natural treatments, including homeopathy, herbalism and acupuncture, as well as diet and lifestyle counseling. Naturopaths favor a holistic approach with non-invasive treatment and generally avoid the use of surgery and drugs. Naturopathic philosophy is based on a belief in vitalism and self-healing, and practitioners often prefer methods of treatment that are not compatible with evidence-based medicine. Naturopathic medicine promotes wellness and the prevention of illness or disease. Naturopathic doctors integrate standard medical diagnostics with a broad range of natural therapies. Naturopathic medicine plays an important role in Integrative Health Care, and treatments can be used on their own or together with conventional medicine. Naturopathic medicine addresses the root causes of illness. p 8
Osteopathy Osteopathy is a therapy that involves manipulation of bones and muscles (the musculo skeletal system) to treat symptoms and illnesses. It is based on the belief that the body can be more healthy and recover from illness more quickly when the body structure is working well. Some people who use osteopathy say it can help to control pain and tension and to relax, which improves their overall feeling of health and well being. There is no evidence to suggest that osteopathy will help treat or cure cancer. Prayer or Spiritual Practice Prayer or Spiritual Practice can be a form of religious practice, may be either individual or communal and take place in public or in private. It may involve the use of words, song or complete silence. When language is used, prayer may take the form of a hymn incantation, formal creedal statement, or a spontaneous utterance in the praying person. There are different forms of prayer such as petitionary prayer, prayers of supplication, thanksgiving, and praise. Prayer may be directed towards a deity, spirit, deceased person, or lofty idea, for the purpose of worshipping, requesting guidance, requesting assistance, confessing transgressions (sins) or to express one s thoughts and emotions. Thus, people pray for many reasons such as personal benefit or for the sake of others. p 9
Relaxation Techniques R elaxation techniques can reduce stress symptoms and help you enjoy a better quality of life, especially if you have an illness. Relaxation techniques are a great way to help with stress management. Relaxation isn t just about peace of mind or enjoying a hobby. Relaxation is a process that decreases the effects of stress on your mind and body. Relaxation techniques can help you cope with everyday stress and with stress related to various health problems, such as cancer and pain. Whether your stress is spiraling out of control or you ve already got it tamed, you can benefit from learning relaxation techniques. Relaxation techniques also are often free or low cost, pose little risk, and can be done just about anywhere. Self-help or Support Groups Self-help groups or support groups are groups of people who provide mutual support for each other. In a selfhelp group, the members share a common problem, often a common disease or addiction. Their mutual goal is to help each other to deal with, if possible to heal or to recover from this problem. In modern industrial society, family and community ties are often disrupted due to mobility and other social changes. Thus, people often choose to join with others who share mutual interests and concerns. p 10
Special Diet Programs Special Diet programs are the nurturing we get from food on a physical, emotional and mental level. Most health concerns are associated either with a lack or excess of nutrients. Choosing to spend the time to notice your reaction to different foods and taking the time to prepare and enjoy healthy meals is an important step in improving and maintaining health. Keep in mind, it is not the process of eating that is essential to health it is the absorption of proper nutrients. Yoga Yoga is a great way to work on your flexibility and strength. Just about everyone can do it, too. it s not just for people who can touch their toes or want to meditate. Some types of yoga are about relaxation. In others, you move more. Most types focus on learning poses, called asanas. They also usually include attention to breathing. The origins of Yoga have been speculated to date back to pre-vedic Indian traditions, but most likely developed around the sixth and fifth centuries BC, in ancient India s ascetic circles, which are also credited with the early sramana movements. p 11
CREDITS This talk was given by Dan Faber before the Warriors+one Group because in 2006 nearly three-quarters of Canadians (74%) had used at least one alternative medicine therapy sometime in their lives, (N. Esmail, 2006). There is confusion between alternative and complementary medicines, sometimes termed CAM. This talk emphasized ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE. There is no agreement between the U.K., the U.S.A. and Canada as to what therapies are important; I selected the therapies listed by N. Esmail in the report of the Fraser Institute. Below are several of the many sources that were used to compile this paper ne+therapy (for extra photos) Nadeem Esmail, Complementary and Alternative Medicine in Canada: Trends in Use and Public Attitudes, , Fraser Instute.
