1 COMMERCIAL BULLETIN Monthly service July 2015 Anticoagulants recommended over Aspirin Patients who suffer from atrial fibrillation (AF) should be prescribed Anticoagulants and not Aspirin says National Institute for health and Care Excellence (NICE). The risks of taking Aspirin (which has been used for years) now outweigh the benefits. Aspirin can cause stomach bleeds. People with AF who have a CHA2DS2-VASC stroke risk score of two or above are offered newer anticoagulants, such as apixaban, dabigatran etexilate, rivaroxaban or a vitamin K antagonist like warfarin. Special points of interest This bulletin is free to Interested people in Pharma & Healthcare Please send names of new subscribers to Jackie@wavedata.co.uk If you have articles, comments or story ideas, please send them to the above Inside this issue Anticoagulants recommended over Aspirin UPDATE on Controlled Drug prescribing PRICE WATCH... Prescriptions for Schedule 2, 3 and 4 CDs are only valid for 28 days. Schedule 2 and 3 CDs cannot be prescribed on repeat dispensing prescriptions. In the case of owings, the owing balance of prescriptions for Schedule 2, 3 or 4 CDs cannot be dispensed later than 28 days after the appropriate date on the prescription.. To be valid, on top of the normal prescription requirements for prescription only medicines, prescriptions for Schedule 2 and 3 Controlled Drugs must meet certain prescription writing requirements. In summary, these prescriptions must contain the dose, form, strength (where appropriate) and a total quantity of the preparation in both words and figures. NOTE - Although the legislation came in from July 1, actual EPS CD dispensing has to wait until pharmacies using the EPS have had the relevant software upgrade Information provided by Dispex who provide classroom training courses for dispensing doctor practices on all aspects of Controlled Drugs. Sponsorship slots are available contact Dispex on and ask for Greg or gbull@dispex.net for more details. PRICE WATCH... UK Bargains offered among recent launches Half a dozen of our basket of recently-launched products were available at bargain prices last month, after double-digit price falls in their lowest prices. Each bargain, however, was mainly only available from a single source. Just for 56-tablet packs of cilostazol 100mg was the 33% price drop for the lowest price reflected in an average price fall of 15%, suggesting that other suppliers were also cutting their prices (see Figure 1). 3 Page 3 Videos for Pricing Managers Our managing director Charles Joynson has recently created five more short videos about using pricing plastically using the bppi.co.uk 10 year pricing website. The videos which all start BPPI can be found at: The other videos in the same folder cover: 1. Prescription data (ScriptMap) 2. Patent expiry /loss of exclusivity 3. Analysis of UK retail pricing Wavedata New Product-Specific BE Guidance s New product-specific draft guidance has been released by the FDA The guidance offers recommendations on the design of bioequivalence studies to support ANDAs The documents cover 43 drug products, including some that are still protected from generic competition. The design of tablets and capsules The design of generic tablets and capsules are to be similar in size and shape to their reference listed drug to ensure patient acceptance and compliance, by the FDA. Parameters have been set on how much a generic can vary from its brand counterpart, sized and weights are both factors to be considered.
