1 RESPIRATORY SYSTEM MODULE Academic Year Study Guide
2 Respiratory Objectives By the end of this system, students should recognize the followings: 1. The respiratory passages and its classification into upper and lower portions. The different types of cells present in the mucous membrane lining the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses and nasopharynx. The structure and histology of the larynx, trachea and bronchial tree and the differentiation between the vaious types of cells present within the soft tissue of the lung and pleura with special reference to their functions. 2. The structure of the nose & paranasal sinuses with their applied anatomy. The anatomy of the larynx with its cartilages, membranes & the laryngeal muscles. The structure of the thoracic wall bones and muscles of the thoracic wall, with their nerve, arterial, venous supply & lymphatic drainage.the intercostal spaces with their contents. The boundaries and contents of the inlet of the thorax plus the surface anatomy, relations, nerve & blood supply of the pleura, lungs, bronchial tree, main bronchi and trachea. 3. Functions of the respiratory system, the airways and lung architecture structure in relation to function. Mechanics of breathing including respiratory muscles, intrapulmonary pressure, Intrapleural pressure and transpulmonary pressure. Compliance, ventilation, lung volumes and capacity. Also Gas diffusion and excahnge, pulmonary circulation and ventilation/perfusion relationship. 4. Diseases of respiratory system including inflamatory diseases of the nose, tonsils and larynx and tumors. Different types of bronchitis and bronchial asthma. Bronchiectasis and emphysema, their etiology, pathogenesis, pathologic picture and complications. Different types of pneumonia and anatomical distribution of the consolidation. Also vascular disorders as Chronic venous congestion of the lungs, pulmorary emblism and pneumoconiosis. In addition to tumors of the lungs,inflammatory and neoplastic diseases of the pleura. 5. Clinically useful drugs used in the treatment of asthma, rhinitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and cough.the mechanisms of different groups of drugs, for example, by relaxing bronchial smooth muscle, or modulating the inflammatory response are clarified and the therapeutic approach to status asthmaticus.
