Take Charge of YOUR COPD
You are the Key Did you know that Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Flare-Ups cause your COPD to progress faster and shorten your life? The key is managing your COPD so you can have a longer and more enjoyable life. Catch a flare-up early and take immediate action. Talk to your doctor today and develop a plan that works for you.
How Can I Manage My COPD Symptoms? Ì Take your regular COPD medicines even when you feel better. Your fast-acting medicine, such as a rescue inhaler, doesn t replace your other breathing medicines. If you re using your rescue inhaler multiple times a day or more than usual, call your doctor today. Ì Always have your rescue inhaler on hand in case of emergencies. Ì Have a COPD action plan in place, as discussed with your doctor. Ì Decrease your exposure to air irritants, such as: Smoke Chemicals Cooking and fireplace fumes Poor outdoor air quality
Know Your Daily COPD Medicines Many people with COPD take controller medicines (longer acting) to keep them feeling well and their lungs as healthy as possible. When you have a COPD flare-up or as your COPD progresses, you will also need a steroid medicine. Remember, with COPD your lungs trap air, so you get less oxygen and are easily irritated by air irritants. What do my daily medicines do? These medicines help: Ì Decrease swelling in the lungs. Ì Keep your lungs airways open so you can breathe better and have fewer flare-ups. What are some types of COPD Medicines? Ì Long-acting Bronchodilator. This medicine opens the airways so you breathe easier. It works over time and helps keep your lungs open. Ì Theophylline. This medicine relaxes the muscles around your lungs and decreases inflammation. Ì Short-acting bronchodilator. This medicine quickly opens the airways up. This medicine is only used for immediate relief. Ì Inhaled or by-mouth corticosteroids (steroids). This medicine decreases swelling and inflammation.
What are Fast-Acting (Rescue) Medicines? Short-acting bronchodilators are often called rescue inhalers or medications. These should only be used during a COPD flare-up. If you are using your rescue inhaler more than a few times a week, talk to your doctor right away. Remember to use your rescue inhaler properly! Ì Remove cap and shake inhaler. Ì Tilt your head back and breathe out. Ì Hold your inhaler the width of two fingers from your open mouth. Press and inhale. Ì Breathe in slowly for three to five seconds. Ì Hold your breath for 10 seconds. Ì Wait one minute and continue as directed. Why Are My Medications Important? Your medicines are key to keeping your COPD under control. Be proactive. Ì Learn your early warning signs. Ì Stay active. Ì Pace yourself. Ì Break your work down into smaller steps. Ì Ask for help if you need it. Most importantly, be kind to yourself. Realize some days will be easier than others.
Five Ways to Stay in Control Know and avoid your triggers! Stop smoking. Call the Tennessee Tobacco Quitline at Create a COPD action plan with your doctor. Go to lung.org to make yours today. Know your local air quality. Download the State of the Air app at lung.org. Worried about medicine costs? Visit the drug company s website to see if there is a discount savings card. Ask your doctor if there is another medicine you can take.
Your COPD Treatment Plan Medicine/ Inhaler Name Medicine Strength (Dosage) How often you take it/ Time(s) you take it What does this medicine do? Date started Other information (Side effects, etc) Take this plan with you to each doctor visit. Bring all of your medicines and inhalers with you to your doctor visit. If your doctor orders a new medicine, ask if any medicines or inhalers should be stopped or changed. Date of your last Flu Vaccine: Date of your last Pneumonia Vaccine: Diet Plan: Activity Level:
