1 CLPNA Medications Administration Module Glossary of Medications Acetaminophen. Acetaminophen is a non-opioid analgesic used to manage mild pain and fever. Acetylsalicylic acid. Acetylsalicylic acid is a non-opioid analgesic used for moderate pain or fever, transient ischemic attacks, myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke and angina. Alendronate. Alendronate is a resorption inhibitor used in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis in men and women, and Paget s disease. Allopurinol. Allopurinol is an anti-gout drug used for the treatment of gout, uric acid neuropathy, and uric acid stone formation. Amitriptyline. Amitriptyline is an antidepressant medication used for management of major depression. Amlodipine. Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker used to manage hypertension and angina pectoris. Amoxicillin. Amoxicillin is an anti-infective penicillin used to treat respiratory infections, scarlet fever, otitis media, pneumonia, skin infections and gonorrhea. Atenolol. Atenolol is a cardiovascular beta blocker used for hypertension, myocardial infarction and angina. Atorvastatin. Atorvastatin is a cardiovascular antilipemic used to lower cholesterol levels. Azithromycin. Azithromycin is an anti-infective macrolide used for infections of the respiratory tract, skin, urethritis, cervicitis, tonsillitis and pneumonia. Betamethasone. Betamethasone is dermatologic steroid used for itching, dryness, crusting, scaling, inflammation, and other skin conditions. Bisoprolol. Bisoprolol is a cardiovascular beta blocker that reduces workload on heart and makes it beat more regularly by blocking certain hormones. Budesonide & Formoterol. 2 Bupropion. Bupropion is a mental health antidepressant used for depression and smoking cessation. Calcium. Calcium is used as a supplement to develop and maintain strong bones, and prevent osteoporosis. Calcium & Ergocalciferol. Calcium and Ergocalciferol are used in combination to prevent and treat bone loss and osteoporosis. Candesartan. Candesartan is a cardiovascular angiotensin used in the treatment of hypertension. Celecoxib. Celecoxib is an opioid analgesic used for acute chronic arthritis and dysmenorrheal pain. Cephalexin. Cephalexin is an anti-infective cephalosporin used for treatment of respiratory tract, urinary, skin, bone infections and otitis media. Cholecalciferol. Cholecalciferol is Vitamin D3 that is used to help the body absorb and use calcium. Ciprofloxacin. Ciprofloxacin is an anti-infective fluoroquinolone used for E.coli infections, bacterial prostatitis and acute sinusitis. Citalopram. Citalopram is a mental health antidepressant used in the treatment of major depression. Clarithromycin. Clarithromycin is an anti-infective macrolide used in the treatment of respiratory infections, pharyngitis, tonsillitis and sinusitis. Clonazepam. Clonazepam is a mental health sedative used to treat seizures and panic disorders. Clopidogrel. Clopidogrel is an antiplatelet drug used to inhibit blood clots and prevent heart attacks and stroke. Cyanocobalamin. Cyanocobalamin is Vitamin B12 that is used for B12 deficiency, pernicious anemia, hemorrhage, renal, and hepatic diseases. Cyclobenzaprine. Cyclobenzaprine is a muscle relaxant used to treat muscle spasms. Diclofenac. Diclofenac is a NSAID used for arthritic conditions and muscle spasms. Digoxin. Digoxin is a cardiovascular digitalis used to treat chronic heart failure, atrial fibrillation, and flutter and tachycardia. CLPNA Medication Administration: Glossary page 2
3 Diltiazem. Diltiazem is a cardiovascular calcium channel blocker used for angina, hypertension, vasospasm, atrial fibrillation and flutter, and tachycardia. Divalproex. Divalproex is a mental health medication used for seizures, bipolar disorder and migraine prophylaxis. Docusate. Docusate is a laxative and stool softener that increases of amount of water in stool. Domperidone. Domperidone is a dopamine antagonist that is used to relieve nausea, vomiting and bloating. Donepezil. Donepezil is a neurological drug used to manage all stages of Alzheimer s disease. Drospirenone & Ethinyl Estradiol. Drospirenone and Ethinyl Estradiol is a hormone used for birth control, regular and less painful periods, and to treat acne. Duloxetine. Duloxetine is a mental health antidepressant used for depression, anxiety, diabetic neuropathy, and fibromyalgia. Escitalopram. Escitalopram is a mental health antidepressant used to treat major depression and anxiety. Esomeprazole. Esomeprazole is a gastrointestinal proton pump inhibitor used to reduce stomach acid and treat GERD. Estradiol. Estradiol is an estrogen hormone used to manage menopause, breast cancer, prostatic cancer, atrophic vaginitis, and osteoporosis. Ethinyl Estradiol & Levonorgestrel. Ethinyl Estradiol and Levonorgestrel are estrogen hormones used in oral contraceptives. Ethinyl Estradiol & Norgestimate. Ethinyl Estradiol and Norgestimate are progestin and estrogen hormones used for birth control, regular and less painful periods, and for treatment of acne. Ezetimibe. Ezetimibe is a cardiovascular antilipemic used to treat high cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart disease. Fenofibrate. Fenofibrate is a cardiovascular fibrate used to reduce cholesterol and fat in the blood. Fluticasone. Fluticasone is a respiratory corticosteroid used for chronic asthma, seasonal rhinitis, and allergies. CLPNA Medication Administration: Glossary page 3
4 Fluticasone & Salmeterol. Fluticasone and Salmeterol is a respiratory bronchodilator used for asthma and COPD. Folic acid. Folic acid is Vitamin B9 that is used for anemia, liver disease, alcoholism, intestinal obstruction, and folic acid deficiency. Furosemide. Furosemide is a cardiovascular diuretic used for edema and hypertension. Gabapentin. Gabapentin is a mental health anticonvulsant used for seizures, postherpetic neuralgia, and diabetic neuropathy. Gliclazide. Gliclazide is a diabetic oral hypoglycemic agent used to manage blood glucose in adult Type 2 diabetes mellitus. Glyburide. Glyburide is a diabetic oral hypoglycemic agent used to manage blood glucose in adult Type 2 diabetes mellitus. Hydrochlorothiazide. Hydrochlorothiazide is a cardiovascular diuretic used for treatment of hypertension and congestive heart failure. Hydrocortisone. Hydrocortisone is an anti-inflammatory corticosteroid used for severe inflammation, septic shock, adrenal insufficiency, ulcerative colitis, and collagen disorder. Hydromorphone. Hydromorphone is an opioid analgesic used to manage moderate to severe pain. Irbesartan. Irbesartan is a cardiovascular angiotensin used in the treatment of hypertension. Iron ferrous. Iron ferrous is used to treat iron deficiency anemia. Lansoprazole. Lansoprazole is a gastrointestinal anti-ulcer drug used for GERD, ulcers, and erosive esophagitis. Levothyroxine. Levothyroxine is a thyroid hormone replacement. Lorazepam. Lorazepam is a mental health anti-anxiety drug used for treatment of anxiety, irritability, and insomnia. Metformin. Metformin is a diabetic oral hypoglycemic agent used for adult Type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methylphenidate. 5 Metoprolol. Metoprolol is a cardiovascular beta blocker used for hypertension, myocardial infarction, angina, and heart failure. Mirtazapine. Mirtazapine is mental health antidepressant used for treatment of depression. Mometasone. Mometasone is a respiratory corticosteroid used for chronic asthma, seasonal rhinitis, and allergies. Morphine. Morphine is an opioid analgesic used to manage severe pain. Naproxen. Naproxen is a non-opioid analgesic used to manage mild to moderate pain. Nifedipine. Nifedipine is a cardiovascular calcium channel blocker used for hypertension and angina. Nitroglycerin. Nitroglycerin is a cardiovascular antianginal used to treat angina pectoris. Olanzapine. Olanzapine is a mental health antipsychotic used to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Omeprazole. Omeprazole is a gastrointestinal anti-secretory used for duodenal ulcers and GERD. Oxazepam. Oxazepam is a benzodiazepine used for anxiety, insomnia, and to manage symptoms of alcohol withdrawal. Oxycodone. Oxycodone is an opioid analgesic used to manage moderate to severe pain. Pantoprazole. Pantoprazole is a gastrointestinal proton pump inhibitor used for peptic ulcers and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease or GERD. Paroxetine. Paroxetine is an antidepressant used to treat anxiety, depression, social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and PTSD. Perindopril. Perindopril is a cardiovascular ACE inhibitor used to treat hypertension. Potassium. Potassium is a supplement used to prevent and treat hypokalemia. Prednisone. Prednisone is an anti-inflammatory corticosteroid used for severe inflammation, immune suppression, neoplasm, MS, collagen, and dermatological disorders. Pregabalin. Pregabalin is a mental health anticonvulsant used for neuropathic, diabetic, shingles, fibromyalgia pain, and seizures. CLPNA Medication Administration: Glossary page 5
6 Quetiapine. Quetiapine is a mental health antipsychotic drug used in the treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Rabeprazole sodium. Rabeprazole sodium is a gastrointestinal proton pump inhibitor used to reduce stomach acid, treat GERD, duodenal ulcers, and bacterial infections in the stomach. Ramipril. Ramipril is a cardiovascular ACE inhibitor used for hypertension, and to prevent death from cardiovascular causes. Ranitidine. Ranitidine is a gastrointestinal antiulcer drug used to manage gastric acid secretions and ulcers. Risedronate. Risedronate is a bone resorption inhibitor used to prevent and treat osteoporosis in men and women, and Paget s disease. Risperidone. Risperidone is a mental health antipsychotic used to treat schizophrenia, bipolar, and autistic disorders. Rosuvastatin. Rosuvastatin is a cardiovascular antilipemic that reduces LDL cholesterol levels. Salbutamol. Salbutamol is a respiratory bronchodilator used for the treatment of asthma, bronchitis, and COPD. Sennosides A & B. Sennosides is a gastrointestinal laxative used to treat constipation. Sertraline. Sertraline is a mental health antidepressant used for anxiety, depression, social phobia, panic disorder, and PTSD. Simvastatin. Simvastatin is a cardiovascular antilipemic used to treat high cholesterol and reduce risks of health disease. Tamsulosin. Tamsulosin is an alpha-adrenoceptor antagonist used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. Telmisartan. Telmisartan is a cardiovascular angiotensin used for managing hypertension. Temazepam. Temazepam is a mental health benzodiazepine used to treat anxiety and insomnia. Tiotropium bromide. Tiotropium bromide is a respiratory anticholinergic used for the maintenance treatment of COPD. Venlafaxine. Venlafaxine is a mental health antidepressant used for major depression and anxiety disorders. Warfarin. Warfarin is an anticoagulant used for pulmonary emboli, deep vein thrombosis, myocardial infarction, atrial dysrhythmias, and valve replacement. Zopiclone.
