1 How You Can Help Dear Family and Friends: On behalf of The Carrie Brazer Center for Autism and Alternative Approaches, Inc., I would like to invite you to participate in our seventh annual fundraiser by sponsoring us with a donation or enticing silent auction item. Our seventh annual fundraising event, will help bring hope and laughter to children with autism whose futures are still so bright! Every dollar raised will stay right here in our community helping the Carrie Brazer Center for Autism & Alternative Approaches rehabilitate our special children and help raise funds for a larger facility to enable us to serve more children. Many families cannot afford the hours per week of intensive speech and behavioral therapy necessary to rehabilitate their child afflicted with autism. You can make a big difference! The need for these services continues to grow, however. Just recently, Autism Speaks reported Every 20 minutes, another family receives the devastating news that their child has autism, a lifelong neurological disorder that impairs communication, behavior, learning and social skills. The nation's fastest-growing serious developmental disorder, autism, has reached epidemic proportions. Thirteen years ago, 1 in 10,000 children was diagnosed with autism. Today, that number is 1 in 150. Autism is a complex brain disorder that inhibits a person's ability to communicate and develop social relationships, and is often accompanied by extreme behavioral challenges. Autism Spectrum Disorders are diagnosed in one in 150 children in the United States, affecting four times as many boys as girls. The diagnosis of autism has increased tenfold in the last decade. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have called autism a national public health crisis whose cause and cure remain unknown. (Autism Speaks 2008) On October 29, 2007, The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) released their recommendation to pediatricians to screen all children for autism spectrum disorders at 18 and 24 months. The AAP maintains that the earlier a diagnosis is made, the sooner interventions can take place to improve the lives of the children and their families. We want to be available for more of the families whose lives are affected by the diagnosis of autism. YOU CAN HELP MAKE A DIFFERENCE! We are a non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization & school (Federal Tax ID # ), which provides cognitive training and educational therapy to children with autism and related disabilities. For the past nine years, we have already helped change the lives of over 250 children ranging in age from two through twenty-two, and their families, by providing intensive one-to-one cognitive and behavioral therapy. Our special children are learning to communicate using pictures or actually speak using full sentences. Those unable to talk, we have taught to use augmentative communication devices or sign language. We are teaching them to socialize with other children and their own family members at home. They are learning to count, recognize colors and shapes, read words, identify their feelings and express their wants and needs for the first time in their lives. Our older students are becoming independent and are acquiring the skills needed to get jobs and live on their own. Help support our cause and contribute to our fundraiser to be held on March 1 st at The Rod & Reel Club located at 208 South Hibiscus Drive on Hibiscus Island, Miami Beach.
