Stephen Shore Autistic Person or Person with Autism About 1 in 68 children in the United States has been identified with having an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) ASD is reported to occur in all racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups ASD is almost 4.5 times more common among boys (1 in 42) than among girls (1 in 189) CDC, 2017 THERE IS NO ONE KNOWN CAUSE Poor parenting is NOT a cause CDC is looking into possible risk factors for ASD including: genetic, environmental, pregnancy, and other factors Studies have shown that among identical twins, if one child has ASD, then the other will be affected about 36-95% of the time In non-identical twins, if one child has ASD, then the other is affected about 0-31% of the time Parents who have a child with ASD have a 2% 18% chance of having a second child who is also affected CDC, 2017 CDC,

Sensory Communication Learning Movement Cognition Relationships Communication Social / Emotional Sensory/Regulation Stimming is like turning down the radio when you think you smell something burning. 3 THE SENSORY SYSTEMS: Visual Taste Touch Auditory Smell PLUS THREE MORE: Proprioception Vestibular Enteroception Over registration hyper responsive Under registration hypo responsive Modulation issues Mono channel Sensory discrimination issue Adapted from Atwood, T Be aware of these differences. Offer supports and/or escapes from insulting input With the help of an OT, set up a Sensory Diet Allow for breaks from input Be aware of changes in environment (how many, how often, what kinds) I simply didn t know what talking was for Speech therapy was just a lot of meaningless drills in repeating meaningless sounds for incomprehensible reasons. I had no idea that this could be a way to exchange meaning with other minds. Jim Sinclair, 1992 Verbal communication may range from nonverbal to hyper-verbal Some people may require additional time to understand or respond to verbal input Sometimes could be quite literal in interpretation and use of language We might find unique and highly individualized communication skills (verbal and nonverbal) 3

4 May sometimes have difficulty with two-way conversation: turn-taking, topic maintenance, noting reference If talking, may not easily be able to use speech to communicate May have difficulty accessing language (this can be variable) Expressive: Individuals need a reliable way to communicate across Environments Situations Communicative Partners Receptive: Talk less Limit use of questions, use fill-ins or choices Use first - then language Automatic imitation can be difficult to access When my mom moved the furniture in the house I got very, very upset. Paul McDonnell, 1993 Neurology that does not always allow for automatic integration of information Generalization of learned skills may be complicated Sometimes attention is dispersed differently Change can be difficult Many people with autism report thinking in pictures May experience difficulty accessing skills, can vary one day to the next. Make it visual Use passions to teach Teach for generalization Teach for independence Possible difficulty seeing shades of grey. 4

May have same emotional reactions to different sized events Usually thrive with predictability and routine Differences in social interaction and engagement Teach ways to calm, cope and modulate Yoga, Meditation, writing, drawing Providing access to peers Find ways to connect Teach about shades of grey Teach about emotions Hopelessly I sit while mom calls me to come. I know what I must do, but often I cannot get up until she says, stand up. The knack of knowing where my body is does not come easy for me. Interestingly, I do not know if I am sitting or standing. I am not aware of my body unless it is touching something your hand on mine lets me know where my hand is.
