During this presentation, Ms. Wright will focus on the top new, widely used medications, including their appropriate uses, adverse effects and drug interactions. 9:15 10:30 a.m. GENERAL SESSION Windsor I, II & III Safe Prescribing in Older Adults (Rx) Prescribing for older adults is a complex and potentially high-risk process. And as the aging population continues to rise, advanced practice nurses will see an increase in the number of older adults requiring care. Individuals are also living longer with chronic illnesses requiring the use of multiple medications. During this presentation, Ms. Wright will discuss the differences in pharmacokinetics in the older adult vs. the younger adult and review tips for safe prescribing in the older adult. Ms. Wright will also touch on malpractice cases which involve adverse reactions to medications in the older adult. 10:30 11:00 a.m. Networking Break Expo I & II 11 a.m. 12:15 p.m. GENERAL SESSION Windsor I, II & III What s New with AHA/ACC Guidelines for the Management of Lipid Disorders? (Rx) Coronary heart disease is the number one killer of men and women in this country. Many of these individuals have abnormal lipid profiles. Not Head but Shoulders, Knees Not Toes Denise Salisbury, APRN, BC This presentation will discuss common shoulder and knee problems seen in primary care along with available treatment options. The presentation will also include shoulder and knee exam demonstrations and provide a review of x-rays to assist with diagnosis. Expo I & II
2 2. Chest Pain in Outpatients: Tools, Tricks and Tips Rachel Littrell, MD Causes of chest pain are varied and can range from benign to potentially lifethreatening. This presentation will review common (and some not-socommon!) causes of chest pain, strategies for efficient evaluation and some clinical pearls. 3. Missed Milestone: Reassure or Refer Tracey Stroud, DO This presentation will discuss the process of developmental screening, medical work-up and referrals for children with developmental delays. Missouri Tick Talk Will Roland, MD, FACS This presentation will identify common tick-borne illnesses native to Missouri and ones that are not. The presentation will also outline which patients are indicated for treatment as well as discuss various treatment regimens. 5. Using Objective Measures of Lung Function to Assess Asthma and Improve Inhalation Technique Ben Francisco, PhD, PNP, AE-C and Tammy Rood, DNP Use of objective measures of lung function improves accuracy in the determination of asthma severity and control status. Asthma guidelines recommend full spirometry every 1 to 2 years, which may not be available in all practice settings. However, a digital flow meter can be used to document assessment of forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) in patients with asthma ages 5 years and older at every encounter. Knowledge of FEV1 is useful to optimize and individualize inhalation instructions (CPT code 94664). This presentation will discuss asthma tools to measure FEV1 and perform objective assessment of inhalation technique. Atrium Expo I 6. Celebrating Spring 12 Steps to Better Health Jane W. Case studies will also be discussed. 8. Adolescent Depression and Suicide Gladesia Tolbert, DNP, APRN, CPNP-PC, PMHS Adolescent suicide rates are increasing at alarming rates. This presentation will increase awareness on the increasing prevalence of adolescent depression and suicide in the United States. Attendees will learn best practices for screening and identifying adolescents with depression and suicidality. 9. Treatment of Acute and Recurring Urinary Tract Infections in Women Julie Starr, PhD, APRN, FNP The threat of antibiotic resistance is a bigger problem than ever. Urinary tract infection is among the most common reasons for antibiotic treatment in humans. New science related to the female urobiome is undermining the latest treatment of urinary tract infections in women. This presentation will review the latest evidence on the female urobiome and current treatment guidelines on acute and recurring UTIs in women. 11. I m So Tired I Can t Sleep: A Systematic Approach to the Diagnosis and Treatment of Insomnia Justin A. Malone, MD, FAAN This presentation will review common complaints heard in primary care visits, such as fatigue and insomnia. Sleep hygiene, mental health and stress management will be discussed and how to identify and address more serious issues. The presentation will also discuss questions to ask, differential diagnosis, testing needed and plan of care, along with pearls of practice. Expo I 12. Strategies to Manage Workplace stressors for Advanced Practice Registered Nurses Laura Janusik, PhD, MBA Recent changes in healthcare have helped patients and added increased stress on nurses. Nurses experience physical, mental, and emotional stresses on a daily basis. During this presentation, Dr. Chris Link and Emily Day, APRN will present the latest research findings, and leave you with tools you can use with your patients starting on Monday. 14. Dermatology Pearls Kari Martin, MD This presentation will review common but challenging diagnostic and therapeutic dilemmas in dermatology encountered in primary care.
