2 What We Do Know About Suicide Suicidal thoughts are common. Suicidal acts, threats and attempts are less common, but much more frequent than most people realize. Suicide is difficult to talk about, research has shown the majority of those who attempt suicide give some warning signs, verbal or behavioral, of their intent to kill themselves in the final days and weeks of their journey from the idea of self-destruction to the act of suicide.
3 What We Do Know About Suicide People talking about suicide create fear and anxiety in us. The very idea that someone wants to die is frightening. Sometimes, we deny the warning signs of suicide by believing that the person is only seeking attention. While fear and denial are normal reactions to someone talking about ending his or her life by suicide, remember this fact: People who talk about or threaten suicide often do go on to attempt or complete suicide. To prevent suicide we must overcome this dangerous form of denial, ask the question, start the conversation, and perhaps, save a life.
4 What We Do Know About Suicide Suicide is the most complex and difficult to understand of all human behavior. In its simplest terms, suicide seems to be a solution to a problem. Thoughts of suicide occur during times of personal crisis, unrelenting stress or depression, when we are confronted with a fear of failure or an unacceptable loss.
5 What We Do Know About Suicide Most people who end their own lives do so for ordinary reasons, not extraordinary ones. Suicide is the method not the cause.
6 Signs and Symptoms of Suicidal Ideation Behavioral Symptoms: Giving away prized possessions Talking about death, dying Using phrases such as when I m gone or I m going to kill myself Getting affairs in order Saying goodbye to loved ones Obtaining items needed for suicide attempt
7 Signs and Symptoms of Suicidal Ideation Behavioral Symptoms: Decreased social contact Increasing drug and alcohol usage Withdrawing from once-pleasurable activities Increased risky behaviors
8 Signs and Symptoms of Suicidal Ideation Physical Symptoms: Scars or injuries from past suicide attempts Changes in eating or sleeping habits Changes in self care Engaging in self harm behaviors Frequent comments about headaches, stomachs, and other ailments
9 Signs and Symptoms of Suicidal Ideation Cognitive Symptoms: Preoccupation with death and dying Belief that dying by suicide is the only way to end emotional pain Facing a perceived humiliating situation Feeling excessive guilt or shame Inability to concentrate
10 Signs and Symptoms of Suicidal Ideation Psychosocial Symptoms: Feeling helpless; trapped by emotional pain Psychosis Self-loathing Hopelessness Paranoia Intense emotional pain
11 Signs and Symptoms of Suicidal Ideation Psychosocial Symptoms: Feeing hopeless about a situation Mood swings Sudden changes in personality Severe anxiety and agitation
12 Interventions: Starting the Conversation Asking the question does not put the idea of suicide in someone s mind. Direct approach Are you thinking about suicide? Do you have a plan? Have you ever wanted to stop living?
13 Interventions: Starting the Conversation Less direct approach Have you been unhappy lately? Have you been so unhappy you wish you were dead? Do you ever wish you could go to sleep and never wake up? You know, when people are as upset as you seem to be, they sometimes wish they were dead. I m wondering if you re feeling that way, too.
14 Interventions: Having the Conversation It is the hardest step, but also the most helpful to someone considering suicide. Suicide prevention is everybody s business. Feeling some reluctance to ask the question is natural and for good reasons. First, a yes to the question puts the subject of suicide on the table for discussion. Once the question has been asked and the response is yes, we must now do something. We now have an obligation we didn t have only moments before.
15 Interventions: Having the Conversation Listening is the greatest gift one human can give to another. Listening takes time, patience and courage, but it is always right. Be an active listener.
16 Finding the Courage to Act To help you act with courage, here are some things to remember. Don t worry about being disloyal. Don t worry about breaking a trust. Don t worry about not having sufficient information to call for help.
17 What s Next? Ask the questions What are you willing to do to keep yourself safe? Is there someone we can call together? Is there a safe place I can take you? Make the call to an emergency responder requesting crisis intervention assistance. Stay with the individual until help arrives.
18 Hope Begins with You Remember, we are only responsible for what we know at the time we know it; not for things we will learn later on. So, if in doubt, act! Reach out. Don t wait. Do something!
