3 Statement of Need: The management of breast cancer continues to evolve as highlighted by mammographic screening guideline controversies and advances in therapeutic options in radiation oncology and medical oncology. Differing opinions on mammographic screening guidelines relate to the controversy of possible over-diagnosis of breast cancer. There is a need to address the gap between appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic protocols and clinical outcomes. The continuing dilemma of DCIS management poses various approaches for patient treatment, with or without radiation therapy and the risks of recurrence and development of invasive carcinoma. New advances in targeted chemotherapy and hormonal therapy in the neoadjuvent and adjuvant setting impact treatment recommendations. The didactic lectures and panel discussion will enable participants to refine their knowledge of conflicting recommendations for screening and to integrate into practice new clinical therapies to manage breast cancer in their patient populations. Program Objectives: All North Shore-LIJ Health System CME activities are intended to improve patient care. At the conclusion of the conference, the participants should be able to: IDENTIFY the risks (false alarms, unnecessary testing and treatment, stress) associated with over-diagnosis secondary to the use of screening mammography. DISCUSS advances in targeted therapies for breast cancer based upon characteristics of pathology, the potential benefits of clinical trials, and the integrated medicine approach. UTILIZE the interdisciplinary approach and develop targeted evidence-based therapeutic plans for individual patients. RECOGNIZE the advantages of coordinating care using appropriate referrals and describe the synergistic effect of interdisciplinary clinical relationships. Target Audience: Physicians, Breast Surgeons, Medical Oncologists, Radiation Oncologists, Radiologists, Ob-Gynecologists, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, Registered Nurses, Fellows and Residents, Breast Health Navigators. CME Accreditation: North Shore-LIJ Health System is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide Continuing Medical Education for Physicians. Credit Designation: The North Shore-LIJ Health System designates this live activity for a maximum of 4 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits.
