1 Program Purpose ACRIN is pleased to announce an opportunity for junior faculty (assistant professors and instructors within the first seven years post-fellowship or post-training) to carry out an ancillary research project using the ACRIN imaging archive and associated case data. Available images and data were collected during the conduct of ACRIN clinical trials and subject to ACRIN s quality assurance processes. The initiative is intended to introduce junior faculty to ACRIN and to engage them in an ACRIN research endeavor that can be completed within a relatively short timeframe and will result in a publication. This program is made available through the ACRIN Fund for novation. Award Specifics dividual award: $10,000 Number of awards: 5 Application deadline: October 15, 2014 Anticipated award date: November 15, 2014 Program Description Image and Data Resource Award recipients will have access to data ACRIN has compiled from its conduct of a select set of multicenter clinical trials over the past 15 years. While oncologic imaging is ACRIN s primary research focus, clinical trials related to arthritis, Alzheimer s disease, and cardiovascular disease have also been conducted. A list of specific ACRIN trials which will make data available to researchers under this announcement is included at the end of the announcement. Types of Research ACRIN trial data (images, clinical, and outcome data) form a rich resource for further investigation. Potential secondary research opportunities include: o Developing new image analysis approaches for diagnosis, characterization of disease, or prediction of outcome; o Studying the prevalence of findings in a specified cohort; o Analyzing trial data against alternate endpoints; o Surveying image quality or radiation dose. Page 1 of 2
2 Data Analysis Support with the data analysis plan is provided by the ACRIN Biostatistics Center and a statistician will be assigned to each awarded project at the time of the award. Award recipients will be responsible for performing the data analysis, and the ACRIN statistician will consult with the investigator on the final manuscript. Review Criteria Applications will be scored on criteria to include: 1. Overall scientific merit 2. Potential for affect on clinical care 3. Prospects for using data to support some aspect of a future ACRIN trial 4. Feasibility to carry out with existing archived data and images 5. Feasibility to complete within approximately one year from the date of award notice Application Process The Young vestigator itiative Application should not exceed 2 pages (using typical NIH format requirements for fonts and margins). It should include a brief background, specific aims, and a brief description of methods. Description of methods should include the specific ACRIN data to be used in the study. Data collected for ACRIN trials can be found in the case report forms (CRFs) available for each protocol on the ACRIN Web site. An example can be found at: Available preliminary data may be included in the background section; however, preliminary data are not required. Literature references should be included and do not count in the 2 page limit. The following application materials are to be ed to Tina Taylor: ttaylor@acr.org. 1. The Young vestigator itiative Application 2. A letter of support from the applicant s department chair 3. A cover letter that includes the research project s name and the applicant s name and contact information addressed to: Mitchell D. Schnall, MD, PhD ACRIN Network Chair 1818 Market Street Suite 1600 Philadelphia, PA Applications must be received no later than October 15, For questions, contact Tina Taylor ( ) Page 2 of 2
