4 JUSTIFICATION FORM USC Columbia, Lancaster, Salkehatchie, Sumter & Union campuses JUS INSTRUCTIONS: Please attach a statement explaining the justification for the proposed program or course action. This form is available online at Date: 11/3/14 Campus: COLUMBIA --~~~~~~ College/School: SCHOOL OF MEDICINE Departme~~ap~ica~~: ~P-~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Degree Program (if applicable): 0 Undergraduate IZI Graduate Intergrated BMSC and Certificate in BMSC programs It was found that the contents of the previous course wherein the focus was didactic teaching of some of the topics was not favorable to both the certificate program students and the graduate students. I have to mention at this point the previous course was never taught so far, for various reasons. Thus, upon the recommendation of the Chair of the Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology, we are considering changing the contents and the title of the graduate course, which I will be directing. Although this proposal is not actually a "new" course, I would like to bring to the attention of the committee the fact that the suggested changes, will offer a different approach of the pathology to the students, based on the contemporary experimental pathology. The contents of the already existing course, was mainly to offer an introductory background in the classical pathology that is descriptive and its main resources are the microscopic examination of cells and tissues. Though it was a well formed and organized course, the current course will be formulated to provide a more experimental approach of pathology that will focus on the laboratory investigation of disease mechanisms. By using a variety of techniques and methodologies, experimental pathology analyzes the factors that cause deregulation of cellular processes and attempts to identify how they affect normal function. Furthermore, by manipulating animals at the genetic and cellular level stimulates pathological conditions generating experimental models for various diseases appropriate to study basic biological processes as well as drug's efficiency. It has been recognized for some time that many graduate students in the life sciences know very little about human diseases and their pathogenesis. This is clearly a problem given the disease focus of much of National Institutes of Health (NIH} funding for biomedical research. So, the suggested changes aim to offer to the graduate and other interested students enrolled in the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate Program, training in experimental pathology by studying basic pathological entities with distinct histological manifestations and describe relevant animal models simulating the development of human disease. The students will also be exposed to human pathologic disease processes at the etiologic, pathogenetic, gross, and microscopic levels, so as to serve as a supporting adjunct to their academic activities in the field of pathobiology, equipping them with a firm grounding in the morbid anatomy and histopathology of significant human disease processes. The goal of the course is to provide the meaning of pathology to the graduate students and enhance mandatory interaction between pathologists and non-medical investigators (i.e. graduate degree candidates in the biomedical sciences). The pathologic basis of human disease, with a clear conception of both the structural and the functional changes with respect to normal anatomy and histology caused by disease in tissues and organs, as a basis for understanding the clinical manifestations and principles of treatment, as well as the exposure of the students to the experimental approach of pathology will strengthen their background in the biomedical sciences and will help them understand how the discipline of pathology interfaces with science and medicine. University of South Carolina I Provost Office I Justification Form Oct 2010 v3

5 l DEFINITIONS Pathology: Pathology is the study of the essential nature of diseases and especially of the structural and functional changes at the molecular, cellular, tissue and organ level, and stands at the interface between medicine and biology. Experimental Pathology: Experimental Pathology is a subdivision of Pathology that in contrast to the Classic Pathology that is primarily descriptive uses a variety of techniques and methodologies in order to analyze the factors that cause deregulation of cellular processes and attempts to identify how they affect normal tissue function. COURSE DESCRIPTION Pathology is the study of disease at the molecular, cellular, tissue and organ level, and stands at the interface between medicine and biology. While classical pathology is conventionally descriptive and relies primarily in the microscopic examination of cells and tissues, contemporary pathology is experimental and is concerned with the cause-effect relationship between the disease-causing agent and its specific manifestations. In addition, contemporary experimental pathology focuses on the laboratory investigation of disease mechanisms. By using a variety of techniques and methodologies experimental pathology analyzes the factors that cause deregulation of cellular processes and attempts to identify how they affect normal tissue function. Furthermore, by manipulating animals at the genetic and cellular level simulates human pathological conditions generating experimental models for various diseases appropriate to study basic biological processes as well as drugs' efficiency. Our program focuses on the study of basic pathological entities with distinct histological manifestations and describes relevant animal models recapitulating the development of human disease. The course will provide the learner with a fundamental biomedical knowledge base in human pathology, and will provide an introduction to the study of the histopathology of disease. Particular emphasis will be given to the etiology (causes), pathogenesis (mechanisms), and description of gross and microscopic pathologic patterns occurring during the progress and outcome of major human diseases and conditions. Disease processes will be UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA SCHOOL OF MEDICINE SPRING 2015

6 observed at the macroscopic level through detailed inspection of fixed tissue in gross specimens as well as at the microscopic level. The students will also have the opportunity to review histology slides of various organs and entities by using common optical microscope under the guidance of the instructor. With the knowledge of normal histology and by gaining familiarity of microscopic appearances through direct observation the students will develop observational and descriptive skills - and ultimately deepening to the understanding of the underlying mechanisms of disease, thus facilitating opportunities to explore and exploit basic science questions related to disease. In addition by the description of the experimental methodologies including the mouse models of various diseases, they will formulate the causative approach in the study of disease. Basic information regarding anatomy, histology, embryology, immunity, molecular biology, and genetics is introduced, in recognition of the fact that problem-based learners may struggle with concepts for the want of fundamental prerequisite knowledge. The approach of the normal anatomy and histology that is going to be included wherever appropriate, will be based on an online self-guided histology tutorial (Boston University School of Medicine histology learning portal at as well as a supplementary textbook (and online) learning resource (Kierszenbaum AL, Tres LL. Histology and Cell Biology: An Introduction to Pathology. 3rd Edition. Mosby Elsevier, ISBN ). A complete syllabus and learning objectives (intended learning outcomes) will be provided, in addition to a correlative study guide. The course will be divided into two blocks of learning modules: ~~General Aspects of Pathology", and 11 Pathology of Disease with emphasis in Neoplasia". ~~General Aspects of Pathology" consists of a series of learning modules that deal with pathologic forces that can affect any part of the body: the life and death of cells, inflammation and repair, diseases of the immune system, infectious diseases and neurodegenerative diseases. ~~Pathology of Disease with emphasis in Neoplasia" includes learning modules that will cover the histopathology of major human diseases and cancers such as in breast, female genital tract, lung, colon and prostate and will describe their experimental approach mostly through the development of mouse models. Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to identify the fundamental pathologic characteristics of common diseases and conditions, based upon their etiology, pathogenesis, and gross and microscopic pathologic patterns. Furthermore they will be able to design experimental studies aiming to characterize and validate disease models. This is a 1-semester 3-credit elective course that will meet twice weekly, each session for 75 minutes. This course is open for enrollment to graduate students in the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Integrated Biomedical Science (BMSC) program as well as to postbaccalaureate students in the Certificate in Biomedical Sciences program. Didactic resources will include: lecture presentations with use of effective teaching analogies and visual mnemonics, where appropriate, to teach basic concepts, illustrative cases, UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA SCHOOL OF MEDICINE SPRING 2015

7 microscopic slides, and plastinated gross museum specimens, as well as medical library access to the Web Path Internet learning laboratory platform at For purposes of formative assessment, interactive pretest review sessions with incorporation of audience response system practice high-yield multiple-choice items will be incorporated during the course of teaching and learning sessions. The lectures will emphasize key points and key morphological concepts with abundant visual imagery, and have as a major objective learning the language of pathology; that is, the recognition of structural alterations as they effect changes on cellular and tissue function, ultimately leading to disease. READINGS AND EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES Course Documents: These will be posted to Blackboard 9.1 and contain the basic information about the course including goals, general and specific objectives, lecture schedule, examination information, grading policies, departmental rules and guidelines, course director's contact information, etc. The student is urged to refer to this document on a regular basis. Textbooks: As the graduate student cohort has traditionally been found to rely more heavily than undergraduates or other allied health professionals on assigned reading for core educational content, the following textbooks are recommended to students for this course: Damjanov I. Pathology for the Health Professions. 4th Edition. Saunders Elsevier, ISBN and Conn M.P. (ed.) Sourcebook of Models for Biomedical Research.
