WANGARI MAATHAI: Envirnmental Activist, Gvernment Official, Wmen's Rights Activist ( ) Wangari Maathai was the first African wman t receive the Nbel Peace Prize. She was als the first female schlar frm East and Central Africa t take a dctrate (in bilgy), and the first female prfessr ever in her hme cuntry f Kenya. Maathai played an active part in the struggle fr demcracy in Kenya, and belnged t the ppsitin t Daniel arap Mi's regime. In 1977 she started a grass-rts mvement aimed at cuntering the defrestatin that was threatening the means f subsistence f the agricultural ppulatin. The campaign encuraged wmen t plant trees in their lcal envirnments and t think eclgically. The s-called Green Belt Mvement spread t ther African cuntries, and cntributed t the planting f ver thirty millin trees. Maathai's mbilizatin f African wmen was nt limited in its visin t wrk fr sustainable develpment; she saw tree-planting in a brader perspective which included demcracy, wmen's rights, and internatinal slidarity. In the wrds f the Nbel Cmmittee: "She thinks glbally and acts lcally." In her Nbel speech, Maathai said that picking her fr the renwned peace prize "challenged the wrld t braden the understanding f peace: There can be n peace withut equitable develpment; and there can be n develpment withut sustainable management f the envirnment in a demcratic and peaceful space." 2

SCIENCE 8 Mitsis C.4 Name: Date: Hmerm: Cellular Mitsis OBJECTIVES: By the end f class, students will be able t SWBAT describe the fur main stages f Mitsis. DO NOW Label and describe the stages f the Cell Cycle. What wuld mst likely result if mitsis was nt accmpanied by cytkinesis? CONCEPT REVIEW A car is sliding dwn a ramp. Identify where the car wuld have the mst ptential and mst kinetic energy. 3

GUIDED PRACTICE 1. Write the stage f the cell cycle n the line that represents each picture. Cell divisin allws ur bdies t d three main things Matching: Match the term t the descriptin Write the first letter f the wrd n the line. Prphase Cytkinesis Interphase Telphase Metaphase Anaphase 1. The DNA is mving apart. 2. The nuclear membrane begins t break dwn 3. A new nuclear membrane is frming arund the DNA. 4. The cytplasm f the cell splits. 5. The DNA is lined up in the middle f the cell. 6. The nuclear membrane reappears. 7. The cell divides. 8. The DNA is mving twards the ends f the cell nuclei. 10. DNA is cpied. 11. The cell grws 8

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE Directins: Fr each key term, explain the big idea t a kindergartener. Then, draw a picture t illustrate the wrd. Term Cncept Picture PROPHASE METAPHASE ANAPHASE TELOPHASE 9

Which phase des the fllwing ccur? DNA lines up in center f cell. Lngest part f the cell cycle. Nuclear membrane breaks dwn. Cytplasm splits t frm tw new daughter cells. DNA splits and mves t the ends f the cell. Identify the phases f mitsis: 10

Directins: The diagram belw shws cells in varius phases f the cell cycle. Nte the cells are nt arranged in the rder in which the cell cycle ccurs. Use the diagram t answer the questins belw 1. Cells A & F shw an early and a late stage f the same phase f the cell cycle. What phase is it? 2. Which cell is in metaphase? 3. Which cell is in the first phase f the cell cycle? 4. List the diagrams in rder (A-E) frm first t last in the cell cycle. 5. Which cell is shwing anaphase? 6. Predict what wuld happen if a cell did nt divide prperly. 11

Directins: Write the stage r phase f the cell cycle n the line. Wrds may be used mre than nce. 1. During what phase f mitsis des the DNA divide and mve tward the end f the cell? 2. The cell prepares t divide. 3. Nuclear membrane disapears. 4. The cell splits. 5. Stages f the cell cycle 6. DNA mves t ends f the cell. 7. This phase lasts the lngest 8. What frms arund the DNA during telphase? 9. Order f mitsis 12

1. HIGH SCHOOL CHALLENGE 2. In the synthesis phase (S phase) f the cell cycle, a bdy cell cpies its DNA. This DNA replicatin ccurs in preparatin fr which f the fllwing prcesses? A. Cellular membrane B. Cytkinesis C. Mitsis D. Interphase 3. Which f the fllwing activities ccurs in the G1 phase? A. Grwth f the cell B. Replicatin f the DNA C. Frmatin f the mittic spindle D. Breakdwn f the nuclear membrane 13

Which is the crrect rder f Mitsis? Reasning A. interphase, metaphase, telphase, cytkinesis B. prphase, mitsis, anaphase, telphase C. prphase, metaphase, cytkinesis, interphase D. prphase, metaphase, anaphase, telphase 2. The phase f Mitsis where the DNA is split and is pulled t the ends f the cell. A. Interphase B. Cytkinesis C. Prphase D. Anaphase 3. If a cell has 8 chrmsmes at metaphase f mitsis, hw many chrmsmes will it have during anaphase? A. 2 B. 4 C. 8 D In prphase, the DNA can mve abut the cell because, A. the nuclear membrane breaks dwn. B. the cytplasm disappears. C. the DNA can g thrugh the membrane. D. the DNA breaks dwn. 15

5. A student examines the cell belw. She determines that the cell must be in prphase f mitsis. Identify tw pieces f evidence that supprt her cnclusin. CONCEPT REVIEW In ding the fllwing inclined plane experiment in ideal cnditins, students assume that frictin frm the air, incline r flr is negligible. A statinary bx at the tp f a frictinless incline is released and is allwed t slide t the bttm. The figure belw illustrates the bx in fur psitins labeled A thrugh D as it is sliding frm the incline nt the level flr. As the bx mves frm the bttm f the incline t the flr, students assume that the bx experiences n change in speed, nly a change in directin. 6. At what time des the bx have the greatest kinetic energy?
