3 ESSO 2015 Educational Initiatives INTRODUCTION Welcome to the ESSO Educational Programme for We invite you to browse the wide range of multidisciplinary educational events offered to young and/or experienced surgical oncologists throughout the year. We hope you find the programme interesting and take part in some of our educational activities. Lynda Wyld Chair of the Education & Training Committee «We are committed to supporting the advancement of the practice of cancer surgery across Europe» The European Society for Surgical Oncology (ESSO) continues to grow and develop from its small beginnings back in As an organisation, we are committed to supporting the advancement of the practice of cancer surgery across Europe. ESSO aims to achieve its mission by developing the skills of surgeons in advanced techniques and by improving understanding of the biology and optimal oncological management of cancer. Moreover, through our involvement as a founding member in the European Cancer Audit project (EURECCA), an international multidisciplinary platform of clinicians and epidemiologists, we are also committed to improving the quality of cancer care and outcomes through quality assurance and audit. We have also developed a core curriculum in surgical oncology to run alongside the European Board of Surgery Examination in Surgical Oncology, which is now in its 10th year. The jewel in the crown of our organisation is our annual scientific congress which continues to grow. Alternating each year, the ESSO congress is dedicated to surgical oncology or integrated through a distinct surgical oncology track within the European Cancer Congress, organised by ECCO the European CanCer Organisation, of which ESSO is a founding member. We are particularly committed to developing training and fellowship opportunities for young surgeons and have been delighted to see our Young Surgeons Club (EYSAC) moving from strength to strength. They are holding their own symposium on training fellowships within the ESSO Congress and have started to run their own training courses specifically tailored for younger surgeons. The first edition of the ESSO-EYSAC Surgical Anatomy Course on Pancreatic Cancer took place in Leiden in January 2014 and proved to be highly successful. As a result, we plan to develop additional courses in colorectal, upper GI and breast surgery aimed at this group of committed young cancer surgeons. ESSO s prestigious training fellowships to support individual young surgeons to visit centres of excellence to learn new techniques and develop their own skills continue to grow in popularity. Last year, we awarded 10 standard fellowships and one major fellowship supporting visits of trainees to high profile global centres. The number and quality of applicants is increasing year on year. ESSO is also a strong supporter of the Flims Workshop in Clinical Cancer Research, which represents a unique opportunity for European junior oncologists to learn from the experts the essentials of clinical trial design. Our own portfolio of senior level masterclasses is also continually expanding as showcased in this catalogue. Finally, ESSO has also joined forces with PSOGI (Peritoneal Surface Oncology Group International) to launch the European School of Peritoneal Surface Oncology. With this project, we aim to provide adequate training in the management of peritoneal neoplasms and to certify proficient knowledge in the scientific basis and clinical practice of peritoneal surface oncology. We look forward to seeing you at one of our educational events very soon. Welcome again to ESSO!

To sponsor young surgeons participation in the Flims Workshop on Methods in Clinical Cancer Research.

CORE CURRICULUM

ESSO 2015 Educational Initiatives 6 CORE CURRICULUM FOR THE SPECIALIST TRAINING IN SURGICAL ONCOLOGY WITHIN EUROPE Purpose Today, general surgeons can no longer work in isolation and must be part of a multi-disciplinary team. The surgeon must be more than just a technician and must understand the contributions made by other disciplines and how this may impact on the type and timing of surgery: he/she must be a Surgical Oncologist. The technical side of surgery has also been transformed in the past few decades with advances in minimally invasive cancer surgery, improved understanding of surgical margins (the TME in rectal cancer for example), robotic surgery, reconstructive surgery and enhanced recovery programmes to name a few. Senior surgeons need to keep up to date with these advances, which requires dedication and a significant commitment to continuous medical education. The ESSO Core Curriculum responds to the lack of pan- European Training Programmes in Surgical Oncology and the absence of a standard form of accreditation for Surgical Oncologists in Europe. Content and Authors The Core Curriculum was developed by the ESSO Education and Training Committee and the European Board of Surgery Division of Surgical Oncology. It features contributions from expert advisors from within the European Society of Surgical Oncology (ESSO), the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO), the European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology (ESTRO) and the European Association for Cancer Research (EACR). The content of the curriculum has been reviewed and approved by the American Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO). Download the Core Curriculum from the ESSO website Aim To help guide surgeons in enhancing the requesite levels of knowledge for the practice of surgical oncology. Structure 2 main parts: basic principles relevant to all disease sites; site specific sections including: êê a basic level of knowledge to permit recognition of areas where the surgical oncologist practice may overlap or reflect a level of knowledge of a generalist; êê a specialist or advanced level of knowledge which would be expected of a practitioner who is practicing at the highest level in this field.

CONGRESS

ESSO 2015 Educational Initiatives 8 ESSO 35 AT THE EUROPEAN CANCER CONGRESS 2015 The thirty-fifth ESSO Congress will take place within the multidisciplinary programme of the European Cancer Congress (ECC) from 25th to 29th September 2015 in Vienna. As a founding member of ECCO the European Cancer Organisation, ESSO is integral to the programme s construction and development. Lynda Wyld ESSO representative on the ECC 2015 Education Committee Riccardo A. Audisio ECC 2015, Surgical Track Chair Why should you attend? The scientific programme will feature a comprehensive surgical oncology track including dedicated educational sessions. The surgical track will run throughout the four-day meeting and will cover all aspects of the investigation and treatment of the common solid cancers that form the workload of cancer surgeons. The European Cancer Congress 2015 will incorporate symposia, oxfordstyle debates, highly topical teaching lectures and presentations that touch on all aspects of surgical oncology and the diseases seen by surgical oncologists. The European Cancer Congress is also the largest European platform for presenting the latest, ground-breaking data, with a late-breaking submission policy to capture even more practicechanging abstracts. In 2013 the ECC had a record attendance of participants, including 1800 surgeons, which corresponds to a 23% increase in surgical oncologists in comparison to the Stockholm Congress in For example (but by no means an exhaustive list) ESSO will support dedicated symposia on Neoadjuvant Treatment, Surgical Excision Margins, Highly Skilled Surgery (robotics, minimal access, reconstructive) and Patients Outcomes, The Right Surgery for the Right Patient: Predictions & Outcomes, as well as educational teaching lectures on Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) and on Surgery in Synchronous Oligometastatic Disease. The European Cancer Congress 2015 will take place in Vienna, one of the most charming cities in the world a true cultural capital with true vibrancy and flair. It is regarded as the City of Music having played an essential role as the leading European music centre. Packed with imperial history, architecture and monuments, it is also an art treasure house hosting exciting contemporary museums. We look forward to meeting you in Vienna in September 2015 for what will be the largest ever multidisciplinary oncology meeting in Europe. A strong surgical presence will underpin the pivotal role of surgery in the diagnosis, staging and curing of cancer. So please save the dates of this important meeting.
