2 Message from the Shands at UF Cancer Committee Chair This report represents my final duty as out-going chair of the Shands at UF Cancer Committee. I am proud of the committee s recent accomplishments aimed at guiding and improving cancer care at Shands at the University of Florida, and I m pleased to have had the opportunity to work with such dedicated physicians, nurses and support personnal who are deeply committed the care and treatment of patients. This committee provides the interdisciplinary groups involved in patient-centered patient care the opportunity to interact, collaborate, and coordinate efforts to establish and maintain the highest quality of service to our cancer patients and their families. Meeting quarterly, the committee s goals continue to be that of auditing patient care, assuring the breadth and depth of educational programs, tumor conferences and other clinical activites, ensuring patient access to consultative services in all disciplines and providing oversight and quality control of data from the Oncology Data Center. Our work is part of the UF Shands Cancer Center s interdisciplinary initiative at the UF Health Science Center s Gainesville and Jacksonville campuses, Shands at UF in Gainesville, and Shands Jacksonville. More than clinicians and scientists perform original scientific discovery to enhance the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cancer. This report demonstrates the clinical and research effort involved in that enterprise during the calendar year. Steven Hochwald, M.D. Associate Professor, Surgery Section Chief, Surgical Oncology Chair, Shands at UF Cancer Committee Cancer Care Summary: Data Shands at the University of Florida Oncology Data Center has analyzed data for all patients with reportable disease first seen at UF Shands Cancer Center between Jan., and Dec.,. During that time,, new cases were diagnosed and/or treated here as either inpatients, outpatients, or both. Of these cases,, were analytic (8 percent) meaning they received all or part of their first course of treatment at our facility. The remaining 8 (8 percent) were non-analytic, meaning patients were diagnosed and received their entire initial course of therapy elsewhere. The total new cases volume decreased by percent from, and decreased percent for analytic cases only. However, increases were noted in several overall and analytic site groups. Among them is colorectal with an increase of percent in total malignant cases. Kidney/renal cancers also experienced an increase of percent over figures for malignant sites, and 8 percent for analytic cases. Prostate also experienced an increase of percent over figures. Increases were seen in numerous sites. Primary sites with the greatest increases in total new case volumes overall were liver ( percent), Hodgkin s disease ( percent), non-hodgkin s ( percent), oral cavity ( percent), and breast ( eprcent). Several primary sites experienced declines in total new case volumes. These included prostate ( percent decline), ovary ( percent decline), kidney/renal ( percent decline), and lung (8 percent decline). Holding to our customary patterns, individuals from virtually every county in the State of Florida continue to seek care at the UF Shands Cancer Center. Individuals residing in counties of the North Central Florida and North East Florida areas comprised percent (,) of the total new cases in. This is only six cases fewer than the total new cases from the same geographic area in. Figures from the top five individual counties in Florida are as follows: Alachua ( percent), Marion 88 ( percent), Columbia ( percent), Lake ( percent), and Citrus ( percent). Out of state cases accounted for percent () of all new cases in. Cases for females totaled,, or percent. Cases for males totaled,8, or percent. The female group decreased by percent and males decreased by percent.

The Oncology Data Center collects data on all cancer cases diagnosed and/or treated at Shands at the University of Florida in Gainesville. In addition to maintaining the hospital s database, the Oncology Data Center participates in several external oncology-related activities including the National Cancer Database, the American Cancer Society Facility Information Profile System, the Florida Cancer Data System and the Florida Association of Pediatric Tumor Programs.
