2 The numbers keep on rising Dear Friend, This year, more than 76,000 people will learn they have melanoma. Another 10,000 people will lose their battles. And nearly 1 million people will live with melanoma everyday. Last year, Miles for Melanoma events raised $1.7 million to support the Melanoma Research Foundation s vision to create better outcomes for patients. This year, we want to raise even more to help support melanoma patients. We hope you ll join us, and communities all over the country, to fight melanoma! 3 What is melanoma? Melanoma is cancer. It begins in the melanocytes, the pigment-producing cells that color the skin, hair and eyes. It is most often found on the skin, but can appear anywhere on the body, including in your eye, mouth and other areas. The majority of melanomas found on the skin are related to sun and/or artificial UV exposure. When caught early, melanoma is treatable. But when caught late, the odds decrease significantly.
