1 2017 Cancer Care Annual Report Since our founding over 60 years ago, Kaiser Permanente has pioneered how an integrated care delivery system, with our own specialists and multidisciplinary care teams, can prevent disease and provide high quality care. With our team of expert doctors and responsive care teams, our comprehensive services, and one-of-a kind patient experience, we provide a foundation of cancer care that everyone deserves. Better prevention The best defense against cancer is a healthy lifestyle and, we believe, having a great partner in health - Kaiser Permanente: Doctors focused on total health to help keep people well and as fit as can be. Classes to improve health and well-being. Online programs to help beat stress, lose weight, stop smoking, and eat healthy. Online health assessment to know the state of one s health, risks for illness, and more. Physicians make sure their patients are current with all vaccines and screenings, from infants to seniors. Adolescents are encouraged to get the HPV vaccine, a cancer preventing vaccine. A screening schedule The key to effective screenings begins with a commitment to making them an important lifelong routine, because regular screenings can detect cancer early, leading to better outcomes. We ve made it our mission to have every member screened on time, every time, so we have implemented effective comprehensive and convenient programs to screen our members for breast, colorectal, and cervical cancer. Built into our care for all patients are screening guidelines that are based on the medical evidence available. Doctors personalize these according to unique family histories and risk profiles. This schedule is available to members online, so it s easy to look up the date of a last mammogram or colorectal screening and when the next is due. Convenient screening is effective screening When a screening date approaches or passes, we ll reach out to members to schedule a screening. If a member makes an appointment for any other reason, our staff, doctors, and nurses will be notified that a screening is due and will work with the member to schedule an appointment on the same day, whenever possible.

2 And the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) reports that our breast cancer screening rates for women are the best in all the regions we serve across the nation! 1 #1 in the Mid-Atlantic and #1 in the Nation for Breast Cancer Screening in Commercial (6 years in a row) and #1 in the Mid-Atlantic and #2 in the Nation amongst Medicare plans 1 #1 in the Mid-Atlantic and #1 in the Nation for Colorectal Cancer Screening (Commercial plans); #1 in the Nation amongst Medicare plans (3 years in a row) 1 #1 in the Mid-Atlantic and #2 in the Nation for Cervical Cancer Screening amongst Commercial plans 1 #1 in the Mid-Atlantic and #3 in the Nation for Immunizations for Adolescents Human Papillomavirus amongst Commercial plans 1 Better detection Screening early is key to catching cancer, and other diseases and illnesses, at a state where treatments are less invasive and cure rates are higher.

3 Our entire electronic health record system is designed around making diagnoses and treatments visible to the physicians and medical professionals who need this information. So, each member of the care team will be linked to a patient s electronic health record, informed of treatment, and kept current on the condition and recovery. But there s also a practical side to our electronic health record system: Our members don t have to repeat their information over and over to doctors, specialists, or other medical providers. Once it s in our system, we remember everything regarding our members and their care needs. Also, rest assured that we re here for you around the clock if you need it. Members have access to our advice nurses by phone 24/7, as well as emergency and urgent care. They also have access to specialists with expertise in their fields. They re ready to help diagnose and treat most conditions that might come up. Our doctors and specialists work together, making referrals easier. And members don t even need a referral for many of our specialty departments. Better treatment Our cancer care treatment is personalized, and members and their family are important and active participants in all decisions from treatments to surgeries to mental and emotional support. No matter what type of cancer or at what stage, our team of expert physicians are here to guide members through their many decisions and the options that are available. Cancer care treatment team Like people, no two cancers are exactly alike so a multidisciplinary team supports the patient and their family by working together to determine the best approach for treatment. In doing so, they bring the experience and expertise to determine treatment options. At Kaiser Permanente, the patient is at the center, always involved with their doctor to make decisions in their care and treatment. With Kaiser Permanente, patients get a team of oncologists, radiologists, surgeons, pharmacists, and more, to help determine the best cancer treatment. Each person brings expertise to decisions based on deep evaluation of medical evidence, discussion between specialists who have different points of view and expertise, and exploration into any new breakthrough treatment options. Best of all, they continuously work closely together, so as treatment and conditions change throughout the process, they all know and understand the progress and next steps. Beyond the core team, Kaiser Permanente has an extensive infrastructure that surrounds the treatment plan. Patient cases are discussed regularly in a team-oriented environment where multidisciplinary specialists from different subspecialties share cutting-edge treatment approaches and results. It s this kind of teamwork and problemsolving that allows us to bring the resources we have to bear on treatment and recovery plans.

4 Chemotherapy Even within chemotherapy, new drugs, new regimens, and new combinations are always being developed. At Kaiser Permanente, patients get the treatment that is proven to be the most appropriate for the type of cancer, not one based on cost, what medications are in stock, or what s popular at the moment. (Many non-kaiser Permanente oncologists pay is driven by how much, and what type of, chemotherapy they prescribe.) If infusion chemotherapy is part of the treatment plan, it s provided for in beautiful, comfortable, and relaxing infusion centers staffed by nurses who provide personal attention. The centers are filled with cutting-edge, computer-monitored equipment that aids in accuracy of drug prescribing, mixing and dispensing. Doctors evaluate alternatives, too, and prescribe oral- and immune-based treatments, radiation, surgery, or other options, when traditional intravenous chemo-infusion is not the best option. Advanced treatments No matter the treatment plan aggressive or conservative, major surgery or minimally invasive, traditional or alternative approaches every covered service can be considered for the care plan. Within our own advanced medical centers we provide chemotherapy, laparoscopic surgery, reconstructions, interventional radiology, procedures such as microwave ablation, radiation seed placement, acupuncture, herbal therapy, excision and reconstructive surgeries. Our highly trained specialists also work in several premier partner hospitals 2 where they can perform more comprehensive surgical procedure and even robotic surgery. Clinical trials Our pursuit of the best, safest, most effective treatments can take us beyond traditional treatments, leading to clinical trials. Kaiser Permanente Mid-Atlantic States has met the stringent requirements to be a member of several research collaboratives, including the NCI-sponsored National Research Group (NRG), offering many options for clinical trials in house at our medical centers. We also offer our patients to be part of the Cancer Cohort of the Kaiser Permanente Research Bank, a national genetics biobank research effort. Other options for clinical trials also may be available. Although not suitable for all people with cancer, trials are always on the minds of our oncologists. While some doctors in the community prefer not to send patients to trials for fear of losing the income generated if patients are treated in their private offices, and some doctors at universities aggressively push clinical trials, Kaiser Permanente physicians want to match the patient with the right trial for the best outcome. Better outcomes Cancer care is a team endeavor. That s why we bring a 360-degree approach to care and also provide an extensive support system that surrounds treatment and provides the best outcomes. Our commitment is to a cure. No matter what the journey, our doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and other professionals work hand in hand from the moment of diagnosis throughout treatments.

5 Cancer Survivor Day, A Celebration of Life For the fourth year, Kaiser Permanente hosted its Annual Cancer Survivor Day for over 800 survivors members living with, through, and beyond cancer. Survivors and their family members gathered to connect with and learn from each other and to participate in free wellness activities, informational sessions and various workshops led by Kaiser Permanente s expert physicians and care teams. In addition to the educational sessions, the event also included clinical onsite services, where guests had the opportunity to meet with a physician and learn information about staying up-to-date on regular screenings and doctor s appointments. There were also onsite wellness activities including yoga, meditation, art therapy, chair massages, and beauty tips for cancer survivors. Additionally, there were mini support group sessions throughout the day. An Interactive Health Expo offered many valuable ancillary services, including life care planning, online registration for kp.org and the My KP meds app, live video visit demonstrations on kp.org, and a 30-foot long inflatable colon exhibit.
