2 Everyone wins when cancer loses 1.2 Million Americans are living with blood cancer. Leukemia is the #1 cancer taking the lives of children. Every 3 minutes someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer. Every 9 minutes someone dies from a blood cancer. ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW Did you know that blood cancers are the third leading cause of cancer deaths among Americans? The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) exists to find cures and ensure access to treatments for blood cancer patients. LLS is the leading global organization dedicated to finding blood cancer cures and advancing access to treatment. Our mission is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life for patients and their families. Thanks to the generous corporations that support LLS mission of a world free of blood cancer, we have invested more than $1 billion in research funding in the past 65 years. In addition to funding groundbreaking research, we provide free information, education and support services for those who have been affected by blood cancer. We fight for lifesaving policy changes at the state and federal level to ensure access to quality, affordable care. LLS is saving lives, not someday, but today. LLS RESEARCH GOES BEYOND BLOOD CANCERS The LLS Approach Blood cancer research has advanced our understanding of cancer at a molecular and cellular level; revealing that specific mutations and pathways are more critical than where the cancer originates. Because cancer cells in blood are more accessible than those in solid tumors, it is easier to study cancercausing molecules and to measure the effects of new therapies. The Impact 5 FDA-approved drugs for blood cancers have been approved for additional cancer patients. 16 FDA-approved drugs for blood cancers are commonly used to treat patients with other cancers. Nearly 40% of new cancer therapies approved by the FDA between were first approved for blood cancer patients. 3 Students of the Year (SOY) is a philanthropic leadership program through which highly-motivated, high-school leaders embark on a journey of professional growth, ensuring that they stand out when preparing for college and beyond. Students utilize professional skills in order to raise funds for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) in honor of their peers who are blood cancer survivors. The title Student(s) of the Year is awarded to the Student or Student group in each community who raises the most funds during the 7 week competition.
