Telephone/Fax: Duty journalist: crier@talk21.com Artist exhibiting at Railway Museum Locomotion, the National Railway Museum at Shildon is delighted to be hosting an exhibition of coal mining paintings by Ferryhill Station artist, Derek Slater. Derek was employed in the coal mining industry for over 25 years. He started work at Mainsforth Colliery and finished his employment for British Coal at Tursdale Workshops in He then studied at Sunderland University and gained a BA (Hons) in Fine Art. He then started to teach art on a part-time basis and continued to paint. Derek has a long standing relationship with the Locomotion site having previously boxed for Shildon ABC and trained in the old Soho shed, one of the oldest industrial buildings in Shildon, which was later put to many other uses including that of a gymnasium and is now part of the western end of the museum site. His vibrant industrialthemed exhibition will explore mining and the experience of coal miners. An exhibition of Derek s work, titled Coalmining: A Way of Life runs until 20th May and will be on display in the Collection Building at Locomotion The museum is open between 10am and 4pm daily and entry is free. Carol Fletcher and Laura Sloan from Shildon Community Safety Group receive a cheque for 150 from Mark Watson and Christine Jeffrey of Sainsbury s Bishop Auckland. Sainsbury s Bishop Auckland has presented its local Shildon Community Safety Group with a Community Grant for 150. The donation came about after the group wrote a letter asking for support to fund the cost of bottled water and healthy food for the event. The Sainsbury s Community Grant scheme, helping charitable groups in the local community, is funded by sales of Bags for Life. So for customers at Sainsbury s Bishop Auckland buying a Bag for Life, this means that they are not only doing great things for the environment, but are also making a contribution to their local community. Sainsbury s Bishop Auckland Store Manager, Christine Jeffrey, said: Our store is at the heart of the local community and it is important that we can do as much as we can to support it. 5 A knight to remember for James and Thornhill Primary Trial s new listing The case of John Kirkwood, of Stanley Street, Close House, was before magistrates at Newton Aycliffe where the defence made an application within criminal proceedings to vacate the trial listed for 16th May. The 30-year-old faces charges that, on 21st October, he drove a Assault charge Peugeot 307 on the A689 at Rushyford, without due care and attention and that later, at Bishop Auckland Police Station, he refused to provide a urine sample for laboratory tests. Magistrates granted the adjournment and a new trial date was set for 18th July at Darlington. On Saturday 20th April, Nathan James Bargewell, 22, of Waterloo Terrace, Shildon, was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a 22-year-old old local man on two separate occasions in April. Bargewell was charged with two counts of common assault and given conditional bail to appear before Newton Aycliffe Magistrates Court on 8th May. 6 Busy baptism day at St John s The Reverend David Tomlinson had a very busy Sunday morning at St. John s Church on 21st April 2013 when he had the pleasure of baptising four young girls and one young boy. First to the font was Elliot Alexander Charles Spencer who was born on 7th December His parents, Derick, a carer, and his wife Lisa live in Albion Avenue. The couple chose Andrew Spencer, Donna L. Dunn and Fiona Lawrence as godparents, with a reception afterwards at their home. The second christening was Tori Jayne Clark, born 22nd March 2010 to Simon Clark and Lisa Miller from Jubilee Road. Tori s proud godparents are Matthew Miller, Rebecca Cornerford, and Timothy Clark. A reception was held afterwards at Old Shildon W.M.C. Next was Heidi Matthews who was born 17th December Heidi s father, Graeme is a British Gas operative and mother, Samantha Russell a receptionist, and they live in Oak Lea. The couple looked on with pride as godparents Rachel Smith, Mark Rutherford and Christopher Talin took their vows, before everyone headed off to a reception at Elm Road Club. It was then the turn of Ava Grace Russell, born on 27th August 2012 to parents Jonathan and Samantha from Byerley Road. Jonathan is a butcher, whilst his wife is a sales assistant. Ava s godparents are Shannon Belchamber, Natalie Mulley and Mark Walton. The family also held their reception at Elm Road W.M.C. Last but not least, it was the turn at the font for Anyah May Collingwood, born 18th September 2011 to Robert Collingwood and Kelly Ann Ford from South Street. 7 Volunteer composters wanted Enthusiastic gardeners, allotment holders and others with green fingers are wanted to join a team of volunteers whose role is to promote home composting. Durham County Council s Strategic Waste Management Team is hoping to recruit new volunteers to its master composter scheme, which is aimed at raising awareness and knowledge about home composting in County Durham. The scheme was set up in 2009 and the master composter volunteers work in their communities to encourage more people to compost at home and provide advice on how to get the best results. Rachel Gatland, waste strategy and policy officer at Durham County Council, said: There are many benefits of being a master composter. As well as making a positive contribution to the environment by helping to reduce the amount of biodegradable waste going to landfill, volunteers get to meet likeminded people, learn new skills and work as part of a team. Volunteers must be County Durham residents and be aged over 18. Free training is provided and new recruits are being invited to attend a training day to be held at Houghall College on Saturday, May 11 between 9am and 1pm. Anyone interested in becoming a master composter volunteer who would like to attend the training day should contact Durham County Council s Strategic Waste Management Team on or wasteaware@durham.gov.uk Annual Parish and Council meetings The Annual Parish Meeting is scheduled to take place in the Shildon Town Council Chambers on Monday 13th May at 6pm. The Annual Town Council Meeting will take place on 20th May at the same venue and time. The Sprint and Jumps group began their outdoor season with a flurry of medals and personal best performances, despite the cold, wet and windy conditions. In the U11 girls Rachel Bennett led the way with gold medal performance s in both 60m and Long Jump, while also taking home the bronze medal over 150m. Also taking home a triple medal haul from this age group was Maddy Wells, who despite tying with the winner of the 60m, took home the silver medal as a result of a slower semi final time. Maddy complemented this performance by earning a further two silvers in the Long Jump and 150m. Leah Rutherford reinforced the strength in the U11 girls category when recording huge personal bests over both the 60m and 150m, earning her 6th and 8th place finishes from over 30 competitors. Meanwhile Jade Hepple leapt to a pb and bronze medal in the U13 girls Long Jump, then sped to another pb in the 100m before winding up her day with a battling 9th place in the 200m. The U15 girls also had some fine performances with Emily Gledhill recording a pb (13.1s) and earning the silver medal over 100m, whilst also putting in a strong performance which gave her the bronze medal in the 200m. Ciara Hughes was also in impressive early season form running pb s in both the 100m and 200m. Courtnie Mills took home the bronze medal from the U15 girls Long Jump and then stretched her legs in the 200m where she finished in a respectable 5th place. Girl power was again the order of the day in the junior women and U17 women age groups. Georgia Hirst returned to the shorter distances in the U17 women and blasted her way to a double medal haul. Georgia earned two silver medals when running pb s over both the 100m and 200m. Over in the JW age group Scottish National Triple Jump champion Rachel McHugh took time away from her main event to soar to double gold success in both the long jump and 200m. Laura Walker matched this medal haul in the same age group when storming to victory in the 100m and then following Rachel home in the 200m to finish in the silver medal place. The club s Middle Distance athletes took to the track in some of the longer races. In the U15 girls 800m event Lizzie Cramb came 7th in a time of Competing in their first track event for the club were Cameron Stainsby and Ethan Edwards. Both ran well in the U15 boys 800m, Cameron finished in 4th place in a time of with Ethan only a second behind finishing 6th in In the U17 boys 800m Joseph Bell was 7th in Amy Etherington was the youngest competitor in the Senior Ladies 3000m finishing in 5th place in a time of Shildon s Disability group also fielded several athletes. In the U15 girls events Erica Dixon was 2nd in the 60m in 10.2s and 1st in the 300m in 60.2 s. In the U17 boys events Matthew Howard was 1st and Andrew Hallett Taylor was 2nd in both the 60m and 300m. Matthew s times were 8.3 and 45.3 and Andrew s times were 9.3 and Both boys also competed in the High Jump against able bodied athletes. Matthew came 1st clearing the bar at 1.40m and Andrew was 3rd with 1.25m. David Parkin, also in the U17 boys age group, came 1st in the Shot Putt with a throw of 4.8m. David Dobson, competing as a Senior, was 1st in the 60m in 10.9 seconds and 1st in the Shot Putt with a throw of 6.7m. Shildon s next generation of keen athletes were also out in force with the boys and girls from the Under Eleven s group competing in events too numerous to mention them all but they showed us they d all had their Weetabix that morning with some brilliant results. Picking out just a few performances, In the Boys 60m Jack Hobbs finished in 10.00s and Callum Gibbon in The U11 girls 60m were run across a number of heats with Katie Sayers running, 10.10s Chloe Morton, and Ellie Sisterson Ellie Usher and Patsy Parnaby were evenly matched in and Millie Foster in In the U11 Girls 600m Chloe Fairclough ran a time of s Ellie Usher , Ellie Sisterson , Millie Foster , Millie Dunn , Emily Teasdale, In the Long Jump Megan Ross jumped 1.41m. Matches keep coming for the Railwaymen Old Shildon Homing Society On Thursday evening, Shildon AFC will complete their fifth home match in a row and their tenth Northern League Division One match in just twenty days when they take on Dunston UTS at Dean Street. By the time the month ends, the side will have completed an exhausting series thirteen matches in just twenty-seven days. Unsurprisingly, the side has dished up a mixed bag of results, although they have won more points than they have dropped. The sequence reads, won five, drawn one and lost four. One of the defeats came last weekend in front of the club s largest crowd of the season when over 1,300 turned out for the visit of league leaders, Darlington The runaway leaders New cricket season arrives Shildon Railway Cricket Club s senior sides will commence life in the newly formed Durham Cricket League on Saturday when Horden will be the first visitors to the Sportsfield to play the 2nd team fixture. The 1st XI will travel to Horden and face former player Paul Jenkins who has played for the former Senior League side for the past three seasons. Skipper Greg Upton The second league game of the season for the Durham Tigers under 12 team was away against the Cramlington Rockets. There was a great turnout from the squad and everything was set for a cracking game. By half time the Tigers had a clear lead of 20 to the Rockets 4. Vice captains Martin a clear win of The Under 12 s coach Tom Dawson said: I m very proud of the boys, they had their confidence knocked with a loss at their last game, but I m so proud that they used that as motivation to improve and that has shown its self with their win against the Cramlington Rockets. Hughes will continue his association with the club through his role as the head coach at the Shildon s youth development centre. Ferguson (1st team) and Liam Horner (2nd team) will have important roles in giving vital support and leading the teams this year. The game starts at 1.30pm and the club hopes that people in the town will come along and support the teams. Junior fixtures commence next week with the Under 15s at Bishop Auckland on Monday evening and the Under 13s at Mainsforth on Wednesday.
