1 Thome Kensington GCC News January 2017 Volume 1, Issue 2 Thome Kensington Club meets in the Art Room on Mondays and Thursdays from 10-2pm. Thome Kensington Club@Germantown Community Center Kingsview Road Germantown, Md TKC Manager: Karen Miller, CTRS Direct Number karen.miller@accessjca.org Who finds a faithful friend, finds a treasure. - Jewish Proverb Happy Birthday George K! May all your wishes come true! A Word from the Manager: By Karen Miller, CTRS Welcome to the Thome Kensington Club! Happy Birthday Kensington Club! How did we get to year nine so quickly? It was nothing short of encouragement, support, creativity, hard work, communication, teamwork, and friendship. The Kensington Club started with a single member on January 22, 2008 in a rented room at Temple Emanuel in Kensington, Maryland. Today, we serve 42 men and women, five days a week, in three locations! TKC members, thank you for being a part of our newest Kensington Club, where we provide friendship, support, daily exercise and lifelong learning. Thank you to everyone who has helped us get to this anniversary. As our Chief Executive Officer for JCA, David Gamse, has often said about KC, The real magic, however, wasn t in the idea, but in its realization. Happy 9th Anniversary to everyone to attends, supports and works to make Kensington Club a realization--then and now! In Friendship, Karen, Barbara, Colleen and Dana Happy 2017 from Kensington Club Members & Families! Important Dates! Thome Kensington Club@GCC will be closed: Monday, December 26 Monday, Jan 2 and 16

3 The Kensington Club News Page 3 Meet Diane Eisenhower, Music Therapist A familiar holiday tune for Jeanette and Trin: Feliz Navidad! Diane demonstrates dreidl before the group sings that familiar tune for Hanukkah: Dreidl, Dreidl, Dreidl Meir accompanies Diane with the bells for the song, Winter Wonderland. Kensington Club is lucky to have a multitude of highly talented presenters, performers, artists and teachers involved in all forms of the arts. Members enjoy their performances and benefit from their knowledge. Diane Eisenhower, is no exception. She is a music therapist. Diane began her music career by playing the clarinet in the 4 th grade. She continued and now plays guitar, piano, and autoharp as well. She even met her husband, who is a high school instrumental music teacher, in band. Her original intention, she said, was to study physical therapy to help others. However, with her great interest in music, she decided to combine the two and obtain a degree in music therapy from Elizabethtown College. Our members predicted when the first inch of measurable snow will be. Who will come closest??? Diane said, I am very interested in and convinced of the ability of music to improve memory skills, increase socialization and communication with peers and family members. She also said she sees music as a means of improving self-esteem and mood, as well as being a mode for self-expression. We are happy to have Diane become part of the regular KC performers and educators and offer music therapy to Thome Kensington Club members and the Senior 55 Plus members at the Germantown Community Center.
4 Great Chicken Soup for Winter Cold and Flu Season Reprinted from sageminder.com Chicken soup is one of the oldest home remedies around. Sometimes referred to as an old-wives tale, chicken soup is thought to cure the common cold. Does it really cure anything? Well, for starters, it can t hurt. We are told to drink plenty of clear fluids when sick to encourage the flow of mucus. Chicken soup has a lot of broth! And, who has not heard of the anti-germ properties of gargling with salt-water? Well, chicken soup is very salty. And maybe a cup of tea could do this trick too but the steam may help clear sinuses. It is also a food that is somewhat easy to eat to keep your strength up when you are sick and not feeling like you have much of an appetite. But, apparently, there are more complicated reasons it may help reduce the symptoms of a cold or flu. It appears to have anti-inflammatory and antihistamine qualities as well.
