1 The Student Experience: Taking an Assessment in CFS Students will be entering the responses to multiple choice questions Benchmark questions into CFS. There are small variations between Math and Science processes, but on the whole the process is very similar. This reference guide and supporting video tutorial are the best way for teachers to see the student CFS experience. Teachers are not able to see the student view directly in the system. 1. Student logs into CFS using their username and password. There are no generic accounts, as the results needs to be tied to the individual student. If you need assistance with student login (username and password) the Media Specialists and techs have access to the ehelpdesk and can reset passwords. COMPUTER LOGIN: Navigate to CFS Website: MPS Home Page Students tab Student Resources Classroom For Success MACs: recommend Safari PCs: recommend IE IPAD LOGIN: All district ipads are being loaded with a CFS app tile on the home screen. Students just select the app tile to launch Safari and open directly to the CFS login screen. 1 More information about student usernames and passwords: USERNAME structure: first letter of first name first 3 letters of last name last 2 digits in year of graduation 01 (or 02, 03, 04 etc. of the name is a common name in MPS) Example: Anastasia Appleseed, expected graduation 2017 Username = AApp1701 Note: student starts with student user name AApp1701@mpsedu.org PASSWORD structure: First letter of first name First letter of last name Two digit day and month of birth Example: Anastasia Appleseed, birthdate 07/04/1996 Password: aa0704 NOTE: letters are lowercase Note: if a student has changed their password, it will not follow the above structure. For new a student: Once a student s registration is completed in Discovery, he/she will have a user account and password the following day. For changing enrollment (a student changing homeroom/class/school): CFS updates nightly from Discovery. Once a student s enrollment is updated in Discovery, he/she will see assigned assessments the following day in CFS. 1

2 2. Student selects school - only for dually enrolled students. If a student is enrolled at multiple schools the student is prompted to select the appropriate school during login. This typically occurs with students attending Online Learning or ALC. Once selected, the school will display in the upper right corner of CFS. The selected school is the school where their benchmark assessment results will be available in reporting. It is a good idea to confirm with students that they have selected the correct school. If the student has only one school of enrollment, this step is skipped. 2 The student view of CFS is divided into three areas: A. District Assigned Assessments: assigned benchmark assessments (not yet taken/completed) B. Teacher Assigned Assessments: any assessment created and assigned by a teacher (not yet taken/completed) C. Assessment Results: results for completed assessments including both District and Teacher assessments Student View of CFS A B C Test Security and Narrow Assignment Windows: Assessments are only available to students during the assignment window. Teachers control this window when they set the start and end date and times. A narrow test window helps with test security as it allows less opportunity for the student to login to CFS and look at the assessment. Ideally the test window would just be the class period/session when the students are entering their scores into CFS. The window can easily be extended for students needing additional time. In addition to improved test security, narrow test windows make choosing the correct assessment easier for students. If the windows are narrow, there will be fewer available assessments from which to choose. 2

3 3. Student selects the appropriate assessment. 3 It is not uncommon that a student may have multiple assessments assigned to them in CFS. Also, students in your class may have different assessments depending on their schedules. All students should have the benchmark assessment you assigned, but they may or may not have additional assessments assigned by other teachers. It is important to teach students to carefully read the assessment name to select the correct assessment. The name of the assessment is the same as you see when creating the assignment. CFS benchmark assessments follow this naming structure: Content, Grade/Topic, Unit Name (abbreviated) The student view of the benchmark assessment includes the title, instructions, and questions, as well as navigation buttons including back to list, save completed test, and for science benchmarks save and finish later. The questions are listed one after another on the page and the student needs to scroll to complete all the questions. The save option(s) are at the bottom of the test. The questions are numbered. Because only multiple choice questions are being recorded in CFS, there may be gaps in the CFS question numbers. 4. Student selects answers by clicking the radial button next to the answer option. 5. Student scrolls to complete all questions. 6. Student saves the benchmark when complete. For Science Only: student has the option to save their work and return to the test with save and finish later Option for Science Only 3

4 Back to List: The back to list button allows a student to view the assessment and return to the student dashboard without saving. Benchmark assessments in CFS can only be taken once. However because responses are not saved with back to list, the student still has the opportunity to select the test again and take it. This is not typically an issue if the assignment window is narrow, but can be problematic if the student has the opportunity to login before the test is administered and prepare for/copy and share the questions. Save Options Save Completed Test: When a student selects this s/he will no longer be able to access the test. The benchmark will move from District Assigned Assessments to Assessment Results. Note: this is the only save option for Math benchmarks. Save and Finish Later (Science Only): When as student selects this save option, his/her work will be saved and the student can return to complete the benchmark at a later date. When completing a previously started assessment, the button reads finish assessment. Note: the student can only finish the benchmark is the assignment window is open. All questions are required The system will not allow a student to save as complete unless all questions are answered. If a student doesn t respond to all questions and selects save completed test, the system will give an error message and the unanswered question(s) are called out in red. View Image Larger Images included it the assessments are displayed at standard width of 200 pixels. Often this is too small. To view the images at the original size (as uploaded by the assessment creator) select Click For Larger Image. Images included in both the question and answer options can be enlarged. Technical Issues If there are technical issues while the student is taking the assessment, the student should refresh the browser. NOTE: all unsaved work will be lost if the student refreshes the browser. Refreshing the browser will take the student back to the student dashboard (main page) and the student will have to restart the test. 4

5 7. Student selects view results to view learning target report. 7 The learning target report displays the learning target number, the learning target text and a percentage correct. The report gives feedback by learning target and not question by question. Keep in mind this report is only a portion of the student performance only capturing the multiple choice questions. In benchmarks where there are few questions associated with a single benchmark, as below, even one wrong response can display as 0%. Explain the meaning of the percentage in relationship to actual performance (number of questions missed) to help students from becoming discouraged at low percentages. 8. Student logs out when done in CFS. Students should log out of CFS when done. If a student does not log out, then next student using the computer/ipad will be able see the first student s CFS info. 8 5
