2 SARATOGA, CA-Montalvo Arts Center will offer an intriguing variety of musical genres for its Carriage House Theatre Performing Arts Series for fall/winter Tickets go on sale to Montalvo members only May 7 to May 14 and to the general public on May 17. All performances take place in the intimate 300-seat Carriage House Theatre at the Saratoga arts center, except for January's "An Evening with LANG LANG," which will be held at the California Theatre in downtown San Jose. PIANO MASTERS SERIES Quincy Jones Presents: Alfredo Rodriguez Sunday, November 14, 2010; 7:30pm Classically trained, the young Cuban piano sensation is a jazz fusion artist with influences ranging from Bach, Beethoven, and Stravinsky to Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, and Quincy Jones. Simone Dinnerstein Performing Bach's Goldberg Variations Sunday, November 21, 2010; 7:30pm A Sony recording artist, the American pianist has gained international attention since making a triumphant New York recital debut at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall in Her 2007 debut solo CD featuring the Goldberg Variations earned the number-one spot on the Billboard Classical Chart during its first week of sales. Taylor Eigsti Trio Sunday, December 5, 2010; 7pm (possible 9pm performance added if 7pm sells out) At 23, the pianist/composer/band leader is a two-time Grammy nominee in the midst of establishing himself as a jazz star through his imaginative improvisation and electrifying rhythmic sensibility. Dave Brubeck said of the jazz prodigy, "He's the most amazing talent I've ever come across. Remember him." Jon Nakamatsu/David Benoit Duo Piano "Rhapsody in Blue" Sunday, January 9, 2011, 7:30pm Nakamatsu is a frequent concerto soloist, chamber musician, recording artist, and solo recitalist throughout the United States, Europe, and Japan. POP/ROCK An Evening with John Sebastian Friday, October 22, 2010; 8pm The legendary American songwriter and harmonica player is best known as the founder and lead singer of The Lovin' Spoonful, a 1960s pop rock band with roots in the folk music scene of Sebastian's native Greenwich Village. He will present songs and stories from his Hall of Fame career. Rockapella Holiday Show Sunday, December 12; 4 and 7pm This contemporary a capella group from New York City reached its first milestone as a featured performer on the PBS television special Do It A Cappella, hosted by acclaimed filmmaker Spike Lee. They are also known for their series of Folgers Coffee commercials and their participation on the long-running PBS Kids' geography game show Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego? and its theme song. Opus 3 Artists Presents: Suzanne Vega Trio Wednesday, January 26, 2011; 7:30pm Widely regarded as one of the most brilliant songwriters of her generation, Vega has seven studio albums, a Grammy award, and three additional nominations to her credit. Opus 3 Artists Presents: "Twist & Shout": The Ultimate Beatle Experience Wednesday, April 27, 2011; 7:30pm (possible 4/26 performance if 4/27 sells out) Tony Kishman (bass guitar) and Jim Owen (rhythm guitar and keyboards) go beyond an amazing simulation performance of the Lennon-McCartney duets by playing many different Beatles songs and by taking text message requests from the audience during the show and delivering a closing set that incorporates some of these favorites. R & B/BLUES/SOUL James Cotton "Superharp" Saturday, October 16, 2010; 8pm The Grammy Award-winning singer and harp player wasinducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 2006 and the Smithsonian Institute in 1991 and is the winner of countless W.C. Handy Blues Awards. He was the harpist for the legendary Muddy Waters. Elvin Bishop J.C. Smith Saturday, November 13, 2010; 8 pm Bishop is perhaps best known for his biggest single hit to date, "Fooled Around and Fell in Love." Earlier in his career, he was founding member of the legendary Paul Butterfield Blues Band. J.C. Smith's 2009 release, "Defining Cool," was listed for the 52nd Grammy Awards for "Best Contemporary Blues CD." Originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, he was the 2006 Bay Area Blues Society West Coast Blues Band of the Year award winner. WORLD Opus 3 Presents: Eileen Ivers Wednesday, November 3, 2010; 7:30pm The New York Times called her "the Jimi Hendrix of the violin." Hailed as one of the great innovators and pioneers in the Celtic and World music genres, this New York-born violinist/fiddler connects her Irish roots with elements of jazz, salsa, flamenco, and even rock funk and electronica.
