3 3 Properties ~ related to spleen and stomach meridians warming middle energizer and dispersing cold to alleviate pain syndrome of cold invading spleen-stomach, spleen-stomach deficient cold coldness and pain in the chest and epigastric region, vomiting, diarrhea, dysentery ~ related to lung meridian warming the lung to resolve retained fluid lung cold causing phlegm-fluid retention cough, dyspnea, white and thin phlegm, white and slippery tongue coating

4 4 Properties ~ related to liver meridian warming the liver and dispersing cold to alleviate pain syndrome of cold congealing in the liver meridian cold pain in the lower abdomen, colic and abdominal pain due to cold, headache of the juèyīn 厥阴 meridian ~ related to kidney meridian warming the kidney to assist yang kidney yang deficient impotence, cold uterus, spermatorrhea, enuresis, frequent nocturia, sore and cold pain in waist and knees

5 5 Properties ~ related to heart and kidney meridian warming yang and unblocking meridians heart-kidney yang deficient palpitation, fearful throbbing, cold limbs, pitting edema, dysuria Restoring yang from collapse syndrome of yang exhaustion and sudden collapse cold and clammy limbs, spontaneous cold sweat, indistinct and faint pulse

6 6 Combining with other CMMs ~ + superficies releasing CMMs syndrome of cold inward invasion accompanied by contraction of external pathogens ~ + qi promoting and blood activating CMMs syndrome of cold congealing in the meridian ~ + damp-resolving and damp-drying CMMs syndrome of cold-dampness obstructing interior ~ + tonifying CMMs related to spleen and kidney diarrhea at dawn spleen-kidney deficient-cold ~ + qi tonifying CMMs syndrome of yang exhaustion and qi collapse

7 7 Precautions ~ pungent, hot and dry consume body fluid easily, assist fire, activate blood contraindicated for syndromes of excess-heat, yin deficient with effulgent fire, inadequate body fluid use with caution in hot weather Contraindicated for pregnant woman

8 8 Properties Efficacies Prepared Aconite Lateral Root Fùzǐ 附子 Pungent, sweet extremely hot heart, kidney, spleen toxic Restore yang from collapse; reinforce fire, strengthen yang; disperse cold to alleviate pain Yang exhaustion cold clammy limbs, indistinct and faint pulse + ganjiang 干姜, gancao 甘草 Important in resuscitating from yang collapse : Sudden collapse of qi and yang dripping sweat, tachypnea, dyspnea + renshen 人参 Important in promoting the yang of all meridians o Kidney yang deficient impotence, nocturia, cold uterus, leukorrhea + rougui 肉桂, shanzhuyu 山茱萸 ; shudihuang 熟地黄 o Spleen yang insufficient coldness and pain in the abdomen with loose stool + renshen 人参, baizhu 白术, ganjiang 干姜 o Spleen-kidney yang deficient dysuria, pitting edema on the limbs + baizhu 白术, fuling 茯苓 o Heart yang deficient palpitation, angina pectoris of chest impediment + renshen 人参, guizhi 桂枝, xiebai 薤白

9 9 Dosage Prepared Aconite Lateral Root Fùzǐ 附子 (Continue) Contracting exogenous pathogen with yang deficient + mahuang 麻黄, xixin 细辛 Cold bi-syndrome with cold-damp predominant pain of all joint + guizhi 桂枝, baizhu 白术 3~15g; decocted first for 30~60min to reduce toxicity; raw ~ has higher toxicity generally used externally Precautions Contraindicated in pregnant woman; incompatible with banxia 半夏, gualou 瓜蒌, tianhuafen 天花粉, beimu 贝母, bailian 白蔹, baiji 白芨

10 10 Properties Efficacies Cassia Bark Ròuguì 肉桂 Pungent, sweet extremely hot kidney, spleen, heart, liver Reinforce fire and strengthen yang; return fire to its source; disperse cold to alleviate pain; warm meridians and unblock collaterals Kidney yang deficient impotence, frequent micturition, soreness and coldness of loins and knees tonifying mingmen 命门 (important) + fuzi 附子, shanzhuyu 山茱萸, shudihuang 熟地黄 Spleen-kidney yang deficient diarrhea, abdominal pain + fuzi 附子, ganjiang 干姜, baizhu 白术 Lower-energizer deficient-cold yang floating upwards face red, dyspnea, sweating, palpitation, insomnia, pulse weak return fire to its source + shanzhuyu 山茱萸, wuweizi 五味子, renshen 人参, muli 牡蛎 Cold accumulate blood stasis o Cold pain in epigastric region ~ or + ganjiang 干姜, dingxiang 丁香, wuzhuyu 吴茱萸 o Bi-syndrome with cold-dampness + sangjisheng 桑寄生, duhuo 独活, duzhong 杜仲

11 11 Dosage Precautions Cassia Bark Ròuguì 肉桂 (continue) Cold accumulate blood stasis o Angina pectoris of chest impediment + fuzhi 附子, guzhi 桂枝, xiebai 薤白 o Amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea + danggui 当归, chuanxiong 川芎, aiye 艾叶 o Cold-hernia with abdominal pain + wuzhuyu 吴茱萸, xiaohuixiang 小茴香 qi-blood deficient and yin-deficient yin-abscess + lujiaojiao 鹿角胶, shudihuang 熟地黄, baijiezi 白芥子 carbuncle, sore unable to heal before suppuration or after rupture for a long time + huangqi 黄芪, danggui 当归 Qi-blood deficient after chronic disease warm up yang qi, invigorate development of qi-blood + qi-blood tonifying CMMs 1~1.5g; decocted later; pulverized, mix in water or taken as pills or powder 1~2g each time Use with caution on subjects with bleeding tendency and pregnant woman; incompatible with chishizhi 赤石脂
