32 Summary With restrictive transfusion anaemia is highly prevalent in the ICU Anaemia is multifactorial, but inflammation is an important mechanism About 25% of patients are discharged with Hb <90 g/l Recovery is slow; anaemia is frequently moderate at hospital discharge In many patients anaemia persists for months The importance of anaemia to recovery after critical illness is unknown
