2 Newcastle Disease in the world Newcastle Disease (ND) has a worldwide distribution and it is enzootic in several countries; Only 16 countries in the world have never reported a ND outbreak; The economic and social impacts of this disease is enourmeous; It is a contanst threat to food security in developing countries.

16 Racing pigeons in Europe The risk associated to racing pigeons. Pigeons are considered as a reservoir for a specific APMV-1, termed pigeon type paramyxovirus (PPMV-1), which is a virulent Newcastle disease virus (NDV). Racing pigeons have close contact with wild birds and are therefore at a higher risk than birds kept indoors of becoming infected.

24 Vaccination against ND in Europe In Europe, the velogenic form of Newcastle Disease is not present. However, countries such as the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Greece, Poland and others do vaccinate broilers against this disease. Hypothetical losses caused by Newcastle Disease vaccination in broilers.
25 Hypothetical losses due to ND Based on the examples from Brazil, the losses associated to post-vaccination reactions could vary significantly (from 10 to 54 per 1000 broilers). Taking the number of broilers receiving live ND live vaccine and multiplying it by an average value of the losses associated with the ND vaccination: 1000 M x = 17 m / year

30 Conclusions Newcastle Disease continues to inflict heavy losses to producers in those areas where the velogenic form of the disease is present; In USA, Brazil and Europe, Newcastle Disease brings losses to the industry because expenditures with vaccination and postvaccination reactions; In Europe, the industry is changing and it increases the risk of exposing it to velogenic ND virus.
