4 From the nurse s office Winter has finally arrived!!! As we head into February, please remember to send your child to school with a coat, hat and gloves. As the temperatures drop, students will not be allowed out for recess if they do not have a coat. Even though the cold weather is upon us it is still important to remind your children to stay active. The CDC recommends that children and adolescents should do 60 minutes (1 hour) or more of physical activity daily. What Are the Benefits of Physical Activity? Promotes health and fitness Builds healthy bones and muscles Reduces the risk of developing obesity and risk factors for diseases such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease
5 Reduces the symptoms of anxiety and depression Can positively affect concentration, memory, and classroom behavior Key Guidelines for School-Aged Children and Adolescents: It is important to provide young people opportunities and encouragement to participate in physical activities that are appropriate for their age, that are enjoyable, and that offer variety. Children and adolescents ages 6 through 17 years should do 60 minutes (1 hour) or more of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity daily: Aerobic: Most of the 60 minutes or more per day should be either moderate- or vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity and should include vigorous-intensity physical activity on at least 3 days a week. Muscle-strengthening: As part of their 60 minutes or more of daily physical activity, children and adolescents should include muscle-strengthening physical activity on at least 3 days a week. Bone-strengthening: As part of their 60 minutes or more of daily physical activity, children and adolescents should include bone-strengthening physical activity on at least 3 days a week. Attention parents of current 6 th graders just a friendly reminder as we move into the New Year, it is not too early to get us an updated copy of your child s immunization record showing evidence of the Tdap and Meningococcal vaccine required for incoming 7 th graders. You can a copy of your child s immunization record to nurses@olphschool.org or send it in with your child to bring into the Nurse s office.
