4 A Letter to Henry Schein s Valued Customers As we enter a new year in 2016, we would like to pause and say thank you to all of our valued customers promises to be an interesting year as our industry continues to evolve. The BioTherapeutics journal will continue with it s mission to provide you with current, relative information in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of disease. Heart disease continues to affect our nation for most U.S. adults ages 30-74, their heart age is much older than their actual age, especially for men and African-Americans. These groups also are more likely to have risk factors that increase heart age. Mississippi, West Virginia, Louisiana, Kentucky, and Alabama are the five states that have the highest percentage of adults with heart ages 5 or more years older than their actual age, while the five states with the lowest are Utah, Colorado, California, Massachusetts, and Hawaii. Read the latest CDC Vital Signs: Heart Age article on page 27 for more information. Blood pressure and cholesterol are two topics essential to overall health. On page 6, the NIH article Comparing Blood Pressure Control Targets discusses how adults treated at a target blood pressure level lower than commonly recommended have reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and death. On page 21, the article Recommendation to Reduce Patients Blood Pressure and Cholesterol Medication Costs state that patient out-of-pocket costs can be reduced when combined with additional interventions aimed at improving patient-provider interaction and patient knowledge, such as team-based care with medication counseling and patient education. More than 10% of adults in the United States more than 20 million people have Chronic Kidney Disease. Continue to page 9 and check out the National Chronic Kidney Disease Fact Sheet for more information on this growing disease. The CDC Vital Signs: Daily Pill Can Prevent HIV on page 15 discusses how PrEP medicine taken daily can be used to prevent high-risk people from getting HIV. Daily PrEP can reduce the risk of getting HIV from sex by more than 90%. Approximately 1.2 million people have HIV but 1 in 8 do not know it. About 40,000 HIV infections are diagnosed each year in the U.S. Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers in the United States. More than 1 million Americans alive today are colorectal cancer survivors, or people who have been told they have colorectal cancer. On page 33, the CDC article Health Behaviors and Follow-Up care Among Colorectal Cancer Survivors discusses health recommendations to pass along in order to reduce future health risks. We hope you find the topics featured in this volume informative. If you have suggestions for future topics, please forward them to BQJournal@henryschein.com and we will review your request. Sincerely, Kim Crabtree Director of Pharmaceuticals OUR Mission To provide health care professionals with a practical and relevant source of information regarding diagnostics, pharmaceuticals, and vaccines in a quick and easy-to-read publication that provides educational updates and insight to assist you in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease. 4 BQ BioTherapeutics
