1 Hand Washing Lesson Plan Kindergarten Objectives? By learning and practicing proper hand washing skills, children will understand that being clean is very important to good health.? Children will pledge to be in charge of their own health. Lesson Time Frame Approximately 30 minutes. General Information? Germs are everywhere? Germs are so small that you cannot see them? Germs can make you sick? You can get rid of germs by washing your hands When To Wash Your Hands? After going to the bathroom? After coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose? After feeding or playing with animals? After playing outside? Before eating or touching food or drinks How To Wash Your Hands? Use soap and warm, running water? Make bubbles by rubbing your hands together? Scrub your hands and under your fingernails for 20 seconds (sing the Happy Birthday song two times)? Rinse your hands with running water? Always use a clean towel to dry your hands? If you use a paper towel, throw it away in the trash

2 Learning Activity Germ Prints Use a spray bottle filled with clean water. Spray water on children s hands. Explain that the water on their hands represents germs that come out of their mouths when they cough or sneeze. Now have the children touc h an object (table or chair). Ask them what happened to the object they touched (it became wet). Explain that this is what happens when we sneeze into our hands and then touch an object (the germs on our hands get on the object). Discuss what might happen if one of their friends touches the object while it is still wet (they might pick up the germs and get sick). Explain that if you wash your hands after coughing or sneezing in them, the germs will be washed away and there will be less of a chance for people to get sick. Option: water can be colored with a few drops of food coloring for effect. Assessment? Children will demonstrate proper hand washing skills.? Children will complete the pledge/coloring activity sheet. Additional Information? The hand washing message needs to be reinforced several times throughout the day, especially before lunch and after going to the bathroom. Teach by example!? Make copies of the attached pledge/coloring activity sheet for children to complete.? Ask students to write his/her own name on the bottom of the attached activity page to show that they pledge to wash their hands. Post one of the sheets in the classroom to serve as a reminder of the pledge.

9 Learning Activity Glitter Germs (Before conducting this activity, be sure to ask if any students have allergies to hand lotion.) Ask: What is a germ? How big is it? Why is it important to wash your hands? Put a small amount of hand lotion in each student s hands. Have them rub it all over their hands. Sprinkle, over a bucket, a sma ll amount of glitter into each student s hands. Have them rub their hands to spr ead the glitter evenly. Next, have a few students try to wipe the glitter off with a dry paper towel. Then, have a few students try to get the glitter off with plain cold water. After that, have a few students use warm water, with soap, to get the glitter germs off. Let everyone wash his/her hands with warm, soapy water. Bring everyone back together and ask, What does the glitter represent (GERMS)? What happened when you tried to get the glitter off with just a paper towel? Cold water? Warm, soapy wate r? Explain that if you wash your hands after coughing or sneezing into them, the germs will be washed away and there will be less of a chance for people to get sick. Each and every time the child washes his/her hands before breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack time - cross off a germ! This activity can be a weekly project to be given to the teacher/parent at the end of the week for recognition of being a champion hand washer! Assessment?
