1 AVIAN INFLUENZA USAID Strategy
2 USAID Strategy Pandemic Prevention: Prevent H5N1 infections in humans by preventing and controlling outbreaks among animals and minimizing human exposure. Pandemic Planning/Humanitarian Response: Assist countries prepare for a pandemic by strengthening national- and community-level readiness and developing plans for mounting a humanitarian response, with the objective of reducing excess mortality during a pandemic.
3 Key Areas of Intervention Preparedness: Support pandemic planning and outbreak readiness measures, including strengthening and testing national plans. Surveillance and Diagnosis: Strengthen surveillance and laboratory diagnostic capacity, increase transparency of surveillance data, enhance early-warning networks. Communications: Target high-risk populations and the general public through advocacy, mass media and community outreach to promote protective behaviors. Also working to train journalists to help minimize inaccuracies in avian influenza reporting. Stockpiling: Establish international stockpiles of personal protective equipment and decontamination kits for first responders Response: Rapid response teams for animal and human outbreaks and containment measures including culling & disposal, animal vaccination, human surveillance and treatment of suspected human cases
