1 EWARN EARLY WARNING AND RESPONSE NETWORK IRAQ: Early Warning and Disease Surveillance Bulletin Epidemilgical Week 14: Reprting Perid: 30 March 5 April 2015 Overview During week 14, twenty ne reprting sites including seven refugee, nine Internally Displaced Peple s (IDP) camps, and five mbile clinics submitted their weekly reprts timely and cmpletely. The ttal number f cnsultatins reprted during this week was (males=7325 and females=8572) cmpared t (male=5996 and female=6870) cnsultatins frm the previus reprting week 13. There were twelve alerts generated thrugh EWARN which were timely respnded and investigated by Erbil Department f Health (DH). Tw alerts fr suspected measles were generated frm Arbat, Erbil IDP camp run by Emergency NGO and IOM respectively. An alert fr suspected meningitis was reprted frm Bajet Kandala IDP camp run by PU- AMI NGO. Fur alerts fr bldy diarrhea were reprted frm Arbat, Baharka, Erbil settlement and Shariya IDP camps run by Emergency, IMC and Mediar respectively. Five alerts fr acute jaundice syndrme were generated by EWARN thrugh Darashakran, Esiyan, Gawilian, and Rainya IDP camps run by IMC, IOM, PU-AMI and Wrld Visin NGOs and frm Kwergsek refugee camp run by IMC. WHO in clse cllabratin with the Ministry f Health has started training n case definitins and use n electrnic EWARN tablets frm Sulaymaniyah Gvernrate. The EWARN will be mnitring all the camps catering IDPs and Refugees in Iraq while the hst cmmunity will be cvered by the natinal surveillance prgram. 2 Cnsultatins in camps by Age and Gender, week 1 14: Mrbidity patterns Acute Respiratry Infectin (ARI), scabies (SCB) and Acute Diarrhea (AD) remain the leading causes f mrbidity during this week with 6431 (40%), 938 (6%) and 378 (2%) cases respectively reprted frm all the camps reprting t EWARN. Figure II 1 : Trend f # f cases f ARI, Scabies and AD frm week 1 14 The prprtin f AD remains steady ranging between 3% t 11% (week 14=4%). Skin diseases trend remained cnstant frm week 2-13 (week 14=18%). 3 Figure III 2 : Trend f # f cases f ARI, Scabies and AD frm week 1-14 Acute Respiratry Tract Infectin (ARI) has been further divided int upper and lwer respiratry tract infectins frm week 1, Accrding t EWARN data, the trends f upper and lwer ARI remained the same when cmpared with week 14 (Upper ARI=86% and Lwer ARI=14%). The situatin is being mnitred accrdingly and the underlying cause is currently the cld weather. Prprtin f Lwer ARI cases was the highest in Qushtapa refugees camp (L-ARI=17%) when cmpared with the ther reprting site in week 14; althugh there has been a steep decrease f (7%) in the prpsitin when cmpared with week 13 (L-ARI=24%). Refresher training n EWARN is underway t strengthen prper diagnsis and filling f EWARN frms. Therefre the prprtin f Lwer ARI will reduce in the cming weeks due t the crrect syndrmic diagnsis f cases based n the EWARN case definitins. 2 1 The graphic axis is made n the basis f a lgarithmic scale based n the rders f magnitude rather than the standard line scale. 4 Figure IV: Trend f Upper and Lwer ARI leading cmmunicable disease, by weeks 14 Skin infectins are the secnd highest cause f cnsultatin after ARI. Qushtapa Refugees camp reprted the highest prprtin f skin infectin cases (18%) fllwed by Zawita IDPs camp (15%) and Basirma Refugee (14%) Camp. The health, WASH clusters and WHO in crdinatin with the Department f Health are cnducting hygiene and health educatin and prmtin activities in all the camps. Acute Diarrhea (AD) cases trend has remained cnstant in mst f the camps and n-jb training n EWARN has helped the healthcare prviders t differentiate between Acute Diarrhea and Acute Watery Diarrhea Alerts and Outbreaks There were twelve alerts generated thrugh EWARN which were timely respnded and investigated by Erbil DH. Tw alerts fr suspected measles were generated frm Arbat and Erbil IDP camps run by Emergency NGO and IOM respectively. Bld samples were cllected and send t the labratry. The measles campaign has been cmpleted and the utbreak f measles in Arbat IDP camp in Sulamaniya run by Emergency NGO is shwing a steady decrease with gradual reductin in number f cases in the cming weeks. An alert fr suspected meningitis was reprted frm Bajet Kandala IDP camp run by PU-AMI. Samples were cllected by the investigatin team and were fund negative. 4

Cmments and recmmendatins There is a need fr n-jb refresher trainings n case definitins fr healthcare prviders wrking in the camps t avid false diagnsis f cases; therefre, a training sessin is planned fr the displaced in Gvernrates f KRG starting next week.
