A swine influenza A/H1N1 virus has infected humans in Mexico claiming more than 150 lives. Nine countries have officially reported cases of swine influenza A/H1N1 infection with 1 death in USA (WHO, 29 Apr. 2009). There is an increasing numbers of suspected cases in Europe, Asian Pacific Rim and East Asia countries (CHP, 29 Apr. 09). In view that swine influenza is evolving fast globally, the Director-General of the World Health Organization has raised a global alert of influenza pandemic from the phase 4 to phase 5. Such change indicates that the likelihood of a pandemic has increased (WHO, 29Apr.09). Swine influenza (swine flu) is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A influenza. Its outbreaks regularly occur in pigs. The recently isolated influenza viruses from pigs are H1N1 viruses. This infection can be transmitted directly from pigs to people and from people to pigs. Human-to-human transmission of swine flu can also occur. The infection is thought to occur mainly through coughing or sneezing. People may also become infected by touching obects contaminated by influenza viruses and then touching their nose or mouth. The symptoms of human swine influenza include fever, coughing, oint pains, severe headache and in some cases, sore throat, vomiting and diarrhea. In Hong Kong, although there is no confirmed case of swine infection in human, yet there is an increasing number of people developed influenza-like symptoms recently. Some of them are still under isolation pending for laboratory results of swine influenza (CPH, 28 Apr. 09). With the recent outbreaks of human swine influenza in Mexico and the United States, the spokesman from Central Protection of Health (CPH) announces that there is a pressing need to strengthen the surveillance of this infection to ensure prompt implementation of effective public health preventive and control measures in Hong Kong. Hence, they have activated serious response level against swine influenza (CHP, 27 Apr., 09). In response to the raise of the alert systems against swine influenza by WHO and in Hong Kong, Sau Po Centre on Ageing, The University Hong Kong, has organized a seminar with an aim of bringing participants awareness to the epidemiology of this infection, to enhance their understanding on the management and the precautionary measures against H1N1 infection in their work place. It is hope that participants can safeguard themselves and the community from the risk and outbreak of influenza infection.
