7 March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month Did you know that colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States? More than 90 percent of colorectal cancer diagnoses occur in people age 50 years and older. The American Cancer Society suggests that all men and women begin regular screenings for colorectal cancer at age 50. Studies show that if all men and women age 50 and older were screened regularly, 6 out of 10 deaths from colorectal cancer could be prevented. There are often no signs or symptoms for colorectal cancer until it has reached a relatively advanced stage. Early detection greatly improves the chances for a cure. SCREENING OPTIONS 1. Colonoscopy every 10 years a procedure that typically requires a trip to a hospital or clinic. 2. Flexible sigmoidoscopy once every 5 years similar to a colonoscopy but involves a shorter tube. 3. Fecal occult blood test (FOBT) or fecal immunochemical test (FIT) once a year at home ask your doctor if this is the right screening option for you. Viva Medicare provides free FIT kits to qualifying members. Screenings for colorectal cancer are covered at 100% by your Viva Medicare plan. Don t avoid or delay getting screened contact your doctor today! Getting screened for colorectal cancer helps increase Viva Medicare s star rating!

Use a pillbox or ask your pharmacy for daily blister packs. 2. Combine taking your medication with a daily task. 3. Create a routine by taking your pills at the same time every day. 4. Ask your pharmacy to arrange your refills so they are all ready at the same time. 5. Fill prescriptions for 90 days so you don t run out. 6. Keep your medications visible. 7. Ask family/friends to help. 8. Get your prescriptions through home delivery. The Viva Medicare team of Pharmacists and Nurses can help you understand your medications and the best ways to get them. 19 FLU SHOT AWARENESS WHO NEEDS THE FLU SHOT? Almost everyone, unless you have a history of severe allergic reaction to any part of the vaccine. WHY DO I NEED A FLU SHOT? A flu shot can protect you from getting sick and protect your loved ones, especially young children, people age 65 or older, and pregnant women. During recent flu seasons, 80% - 90% of flu-related deaths have occurred in people 65 years and older. For people under 65, the flu can still be very serious, especially if you have a chronic medical condition like asthma or diabetes. Flu season is not only in the fall. Each year, the flu season varies in timing, severity, and duration. When Viva Medicare members get their flu shot every year, it helps our star rating soar!

21 THINK PINK! DID YOU KNOW? Friday, October 19th is National Mammography Day. Take advantage of your preventive care benefit for Breast Cancer Screening. Viva Medicare covers one baseline mammogram for women between the ages of 35 and 39 and one screening mammogram every 12 months for women ages 40 and older. EARLY DETECTION IS KEY. Early detection of breast cancer means treatment can be started earlier in the course of the disease, oftentimes even before it has spread. Studies have shown mammograms can help reduce the number of deaths from breast cancer among middle-aged to older women. That is why mammograms are so important for women ages 40 and older. If you are 40 or older and have not had your mammogram in a year or more, what are you waiting for? Call your health care provider today and make an appointment. It could save your life. You can also call Member Services for assistance in setting up an appointment. Getting your Breast Cancer Screening helps increase Viva Medicare s star rating!
