Abstract: Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of structured teaching program on knowledge, attitude d practice regarding Swine flu /H1N1 among mothers of under five children thods: Pre-experimental study was carried over a period of 3 months on 50 mothers of under five children residing in selected rural areas of Belgaum Karnataka. All 50 mothers enrolled in study. Results: In our study, In pre test, 7% mothers of under five children had inadequate knowledge, 20% had moderate knowledge d 2% had adequate knowledge but post test 16% mothers had inadequate knowledge, 44% had moderate knowledge d 40% had adequate knowledge, In pre test 34% mothers of under five children had low positive attitude, 60% had moderately positive attitude d 6% had highly positive attitude. In post test 4% low positive attitude, % had moderately positive attitude d % had highly positive attitude, Inpre test 30% mothers of under five children had poor practice techniques, 52% had fair practice techniques d 1% had good practice techniques. In post test 4% mothers had poor practice techniques, 42% had fair practice techniques d 54% had good practice techniques.which indicates that the Plned Teaching Programme improved the knowledge of adolescent girls regarding Prevention of emia. Conclusion: Structured Teaching Programme is the best methods to the knowledge, attitude d practice regarding Swine flu /H1N1 among mothers of under five children. Introduction: Health is a resource for life, not the object of living; it is a positive concept emphasizing social d personal resources, as well as physical capacities. All communities have highly variable, unique strengths d health needs; d is a common theme in most cultures. Health is multidimensional d is the condition of being sound in body, mind or spirit especially freedom from physical disease or pain. Health is the outcome of a large number of determints. The list of health determints is quite long. The factors affecting health may be classified as agent, host d environment. The presence d interaction of these factors initiate the disease process in m.1 Diseases are as old as hum. The pattern of disease conditions have chged from past to present over a period of time due to environmental conditions, m made chges d due to other interventions. The most vulnerable groups for diseases occurce are children, pregnt women d elderly people. The children due to low immunity power are prone to several infectious diseases which may lead to fatality. Among them, Swine Flu is one which has alarmed the population around the globe. On the morning of 24th April 2009, we woke up to the breaking news that W.H.O. had issued alert on influenza like illness by swine influenza A (H1N1) virus. 2 contagious acute respiratory disease of pigs, caused by one of several swine influenza A viruses. Although the viruses are species specific d only infect pigs, they do sometimes cross the species barrier to cause disease in hums.2 The H1N1 flu or Swine Flu as commonly referred to is a global pdemic caused by a novel strain of influenza virus A (H1N1). The letters H (hemagglutinin) d N (neuraminidase) in H1N1 designate specific chemical structures expressed on the surface of the virus. Morbidity tends to be high d mortality low (1-4%). Swine influenza was first proposed to be a disease related to hum flu during the 191 flu pdemic, when pigs became sick at the same time as hums. The first identification of influenza virus as a cause of disease in pigs occurred about ten years later, in For the following 60 years, swine influenza strains were almost exclusively H1N1. Then, between 1997 d 2002, new strains of three different subtypes d five different genotypes emerged as causes of influenza among pigs in North America. In , H3N2 strains emerged. These strains, which include genes derived by reassortment from hum, swine d avi viruses, have become a major cause of swine influenza in North America. The H1N1 form of swine flu is one of the descendts of the strain that caused the 191 flu pdemic. As well as persisting in pigs, the descendts of the 191 virus have also c-circulated in hums through the 20th century, contributing to the normal seasonal epidemics of influenza. However, direct trsmission from pigs to hums is rare, with only 12 recorded cases in the U.S. since Nevertheless, the retention of influenza strains in pigs after these strains have disappeared from the hum population might make pigs a reservoir where influenza viruses could persist, later emerging to re-infect hums once hum immunity to these strains has wed. Materials d methods This was Pre-experimental study was carried over a period of 3 months on 50 mothers of under five children residing in selected rural areas of Belgaum Karnataka. The study was approved by the institutional research committee. The tool used forthe data collection consisted of:the self administeredstructuredquestionnaire to assess the effectiveness of structured teaching programme onknowledge, attitude d practice regarding Swine flu /H1N1 among mothers of under five children Tool was divided into two parts section I & sectionii Section I - Demographic data Section II - Self administeredstructuredquestionnaire onknowledge, attitude d practice regarding Swine flu /H1N1. 3 Major findings of the study were: Descriptive d inferential statistics had been used fordata alysis. The data was presented in the form of tables d diagrams. Data wasalyzed by computing me, stdard deviation, t value d chi - square. Significt findings of the study demographic data of the respondent Age: In group of 50 samples 9(1%) of the samples were below 20 years of age, 3(76%) of them were between yearsd remaining 4 (%) of them were from years of age group. Religion: In group of 50 samples 29(5%) of them were from Hindu religion, 21(42%) of them were fromjain religion. Type of family: In group of 50 samples 34(6%) of them were from Joint family, 14(2%) of them were from Nuclear family d remaining 2(4%) from Single parent family. Family income per month in rupees: In group of 50 samples 22(44%) of them were having monthly family income below 3000, 20(40%) ofthem were having the above d remaining (16%) of them were having the income between Rs per month. Educational status of mother: In group of 50 samples mothers 3(6%) of them were illiterate, 16(32%) of them had primary education, 2(56%) of them higher secondary d remaining 3(6%) of them completed PUC Educational status of father: In group of 50 samples fathers 4(%) of them were illiterate, 12(24%) of them had primary education, 21(42%) of them higher secondary, 12(24%) of them completed PUC d remaining 1(2%) was graduate. 5 The data presented in the above table shows that the total me knowledge score is increased by 30.06% with me ±SD of 4.1±3.97,the total me attitude score is increased by 25.3% with me ±SD of 12.2±0.1 d the total me practice score is increased by 13.62% with me ±SD of 4.12±2.54 after the administration of STP. The t value of knowledge (12.6 ), attitude(16.15) d practice(11.13) scores were found more th the table value 2.021, p< with degree of freedom 49. 6 Discussion: The discussion is accordce with the objectives d hypotheses of the study to evaluate the effectiveness of structured teaching program on knowledge, attitude d practice regarding Swine flu /H1N1 among mothers of under five children. Demographic variables: 76% of mothers belonged to the age group of years, 5 % of them belonged to Hindu religion, 73.36% were from joint family, 44% were having monthly income less th Rs.3000, 56% of mothers d 42% of fathers under five children had education up to secondary d 90% samples were house wife d 10% employed. Association between pre-test scores d selected demographic variables: The findings of the study showed that age,education of mothers, Religion, family income, type offamily d occupation had significt association, d hence H 2 was accepted. The investigator was assumed that STP will be effective for increasing their knowledge, attitude d practice regarding Swine flu /H1N1 The study attempted to examine the following research hypothesis: H 1 - The me post-test knowledge scores of mothers of under five exposed to structured teaching programme will be significtly higher th their me pre-test knowledge scores at 0.05 levels. H 2 - There will be significt association between pre-test knowledge scores d selected demographic variables at 0.05 levels. Conclusion: The findings of final study revealed that there was a significt gain in knowledge, attitude d practice scores of themothers of under fiveafter the session of STP at 0.05 level.
