4 COLD CHAIN Vaccines must be stored properly from the time of manufacture to the time of administration EMERGENCY VACCINE RETRIEVAL AND STORAGE PLAN Identify a back-up location with: appropriate storage units temperature monitoring capability back-up generator STAFF TRAINING Have primary and back-up VFC coordinators Back-up VFC coordinator needs to have good working knowledge of storage and handling plan All personnel who handle or administer vaccine should be familiar with storage and handling policies 4

5 PLAN FOR EMERGENCIES Proper equipment Staff need to know where equipment is stored Data logger must stay with the vaccine Vaccines must be attended at all times during transport PLAN FOR EMERGENCIES Vaccines are not to be placed in the vehicle trunk Vaccines are delivered directly to facility Vaccines are promptly unpacked and placed in appropriate storage units 5

9 CRITICAL POINTS FOR STAFF EDUCATION Building security Flashlights Keys to storage units Pack-out materials and knowledge of how to properly pack vaccines CRITICAL POINTS FOR STAFF EDUCATION Follow proper transport protocols Monitor temperatures hourly Data logger is to stay with the vaccine at all times STEPS AFTER POWER IS RESTORED Monitor temperature in storage unit until it gets back into proper range If the vaccine was exposed to out of range temperatures place vaccine in quarantine Follow temperature excursion guidelines provided by the Kansas Immunization Program 9

10 KEY POINTS An emergency plan is needed to keep vaccine stored safely at all times to prevent loss Post the plan in a prominent place Have all equipment necessary for pack-out on hand and easily accessible Keep all phone numbers updated Make plan part of new employee training Questions 10
