1 A note from the Editor Welcome to the last edition of the Natural Health Newsletter for 2013! Reflecting back upon this year, it has been a productive and rewarding year from publishing a monthly information packed newsletter, moving our operations to new premises and expanding our services to provide better service to our clients. During these jolly Christmas days where food, traditional sweet treats and drinks are abundant, the most important thing is to enjoy the company and make the best of the time we spend with our families and friends. Go out for a walk in the countryside, play indoor games or other activities you love doing together. Quality time is important as it helps us to relax and get closer to each other. At this time of year many of us will make resolutions for the new year which will probably be left aside by February or March! The most important resolution to make is to be healthier every day, being at peace with our inner self and our families. Carrying grief in our souls will give rise to emotional problems and leading to physical health problems. Making the resolution to be more patient, more tolerant, listen to others, speak out your thoughts wisely, eating healthy and moving more are easy to reach goals. Write them down in affirmation mode such as 'I am more patient, more calm, healthier and conscious of my body' and read them every morning on waking up. It helps you to feel good about yourself and sets you up for the day ahead. Every 1 st of the month review your goals and see how you have improved and the way you are feeling about yourself. Keep positive and life will improve. Positivity moves us forward in life! We would like to wish you and your families a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year filled with health and prosperity! I trust you will find all this as a self- development asset. 1. Do a daily goal review 2. Go complaint free 3. The beginning of the New Year 2014 The new year is at our doorstep and it brings new challenges, growth and changes in our lives whether it is in our control or not. The most important thing to have control over is our health. Healthy eating is not the elimination of fats or sugars from our diet, but eating the right fats, the right sugars and the correct combination of starches, proteins and fats. As the saying goes, 'You are what you eat' so eating correct 80% of the time helps reduce inflammation and bloating in the body, allowing the body systems to work properly and waste products to be eliminated around the clock at least once a day. Whether or not your new year's resolution includes losing weight and getting healthier try to

2 aim to eat a healthy diet rich in vegetables most of the time allowing for 20% of comfort foods or whatever you fancy. This helps so that we don't feel deprived and keeps us focused on the healthy eating most of the time. What about exercise? Try to incorporate at least 20minutes of vigorous exercise at least 3 times a week. Vigorous exercise can include 100 jumping jacks, interval training (fast walk with sprints), heavy weight lifting with few repetitions or body weight exercises in circuit training mode. Always include a 10 minute warmup or if you are tight on time warm up with 1 minute of alternating 10 jumping jacks and 10 knee-ups. You will surely feel warmer in no time. A 5 minute cool down is also required and a light walk up and down the stairs or going to get milk from the stores down the road counts and is required to return the muscles to normality. Whatever your goals and resolutions, eat natural foods and move more! It helps circulation, healthy body functions, improves immunity and keeps diseases at bay. A number of health issues can be resolved simply by eating healthier and moving more. Healthy recipes section Healthy home-made 'Lara bars' Most of us have made the resolution to eat healthier but that does not include only greens and chicken or fish. Healthy nuts in moderate portions will help to keep our sweet tooth satisfied and keep us on track to weight loss or healthier lifestyle. Coconut cream 1 cup almonds (or any nut of choice) 1 cup pitted dates 1 cup shredded, unsweetened coconut 1 tsp coconut oil Chocolate bars 1 cup almonds 1 cup pitted dates 4 tbsp cocoa powder 2 tbsp cocoa chips optional Place nuts in blender and chop into fine texture. Add other ingredients. Blend everything together. Place in a tray lined with parchment paper. Press the mixture down and leave to set in the fridge. Remove and slice into bars. It is important to keep the ratio of 1 cup nuts to 1 cup dates or add a little more dates if it does not stick together.

3 Aromatherapy Section Colds and flu It is that time of the year where the flu bug has got everyone and with the combination of the weather it keeps lingering around. Moreover, now that the festive season is over, we return to the normal routine of school or work encountering more people who might be sick or carrying the virus around. What can we do about it? Most of the time we are already carrying the virus in our system and it will exhibit itself when our immune system weakens up. We can still use aromatherapy to help in protecting our bodies. Eucalyptus essential oil Eucalyptus essential oil is extracted from the leaves of the eucalyptus tree. Properties Eucalyptus oil has many therapeutic properties mainly anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. It is also an antiseptic, analgesic, decongestant, balsamic, astringent, expectorant, depurative and diuretic, febrifuge, stimulant and anti-rheumatic. and eases mucus, clearing the head from the stuffiness of colds and hay fever, Apart from being used mostly for colds and flu, eucalyptus is also used for muscular aches and pains, rheumatoid arthritis, poor circulation, sprains, burns, blisters, herpes, cuts, wounds, skin infections and insect bites. It also helps to boost the immune system and beneficial in cases of chicken pox, colds, flu and measles. It is also found in lozenges and inhalants to help relieve the symptoms of cold and flu. Steam inhalation Using eucalyptus oil in steam/vapour, acts as a decongestant when it is inhaled, and is beneficial to treat bronchitis, headaches, frequent sneezing, hay fever, flu and respiratory problems. Place 6 drops of essential oil in a bowl of hot water, cover head with a towel and breathe the steam from the nose, breathing out from the mouth. Have 2-3 breaths, uncover head and repeat. Use half the drops for elderly people and children under the age of 12. Do not leave children unattended. For younger children or when a child is not able to do steam inhalation by himself use a candle oil burner and place essential oil in water over a tea candle. Place oil burner in a safe area and out of reach of children. Uses Eucalyptus oil has a cooling and deodorizing effect on the body, helping with fevers, headaches and migraines. It helps for the respiratory tract problems with coughs, asthma, throat infections, sinusitis and catarrhal conditions. It also helps to sooth inflammation

4 Tissue method Place 2 drops in a packet of tissue or on the inside of a handkerchief, helps you or your child breath better every time you need to clean your nose. Place 2 drops on the inside of your shirt or top and it will help you breath better if you have stuffy nose and blocked sinus, plus it will also help to protect you against any bacteria or virus that other people sneeze your way. This helps to protect you against encountering the flu virus and other illnesses. It doesn't mean you will never get sick but using eucalyptus essential oil will help to protect you and strengthen your immune system at this time of the year. At night place 2 drops on each side of your pillow and it will help to clean up your airways and relieve a stuffy blocked nose. Don t be surprised that on waking up or during the night you will clean your nose a couple of times getting lot of mucous out. This shows that the eucalyptus essential oil is helping to eliminate the toxins from your system. Mix well. Gargle and spit water out. Do not swallow. Other uses Eucalyptus can also be used in baths, massage, mixed with base oils, creams or lotions to help in muscular aches, rheumatism, healing of wounds and ulcers, calms skin eruptions and clear congested skin. Eucalyptus blends well with other oils such as lavender, lemon, lemongrass, thyme and benzoin. Use blends of 5 drops essential oil with 10ml of base oil such as almond oil or creams. Precautions It is not safe to take eucalyptus oil orally or applied directly to the skin. Always purchase pure essential oils in amber/dark coloured bottles. Aroma oils are not therapeutic oils. Stop using if you feel nauseated, experience vomiting or headaches. Care should be taken with people suffering from high blood pressure. People suffering from epilepsy should avoid using eucalyptus essential oil. Beryl Micallef Dip.
