2 National Self Care Awareness More needs to be done to support people to better look after their own health. Empowering individuals to self care has many benefits for their short term and long term health and this is important since people are living longer. Helping people to look after their own health, and their family s health also helps to manage demand on health services. What is self care? Self care is about looking after yourself in a healthy way. It can be anything from brushing your teeth, doing some exercise, managing common conditions (like headaches, colds and flu) or living with a long-term health problem, such as asthma or diabetes. Did you know? Every time you see a GP it costs the NHS 43, on average. Help us to keep it working smoothly by turning up for appointments. Self care for common conditions Did you know that one in five GP visits are for common conditions, such as backache, headache or cough? For most people, they are not serious health problem you just want to know how to relieve it and you want a treatment that acts fast. You also want to know how long you re going to suffer or what you should do if your symptoms change. The good news is that self care can help you manage most of these problems. It may mean you don t have to spend time waiting to see your GP but can get on and start tackling your symptoms. Self care for common conditions can also help free up some of your GP s time, making it easier to get an appointment when you have a more serious condition. These provide useful facts about your condition, what you can expect to happen, how to help yourself, when you should see your GP and where to find out more information. 4 Before your appointment Write down your two or three most important questions. List or bring all your medicines and pills including vitamins and supplements. Write down details of your symptoms, including when they started and what makes them better or worse. Ask your hospital or surgery for an interpreter or communication support if needed. Ask a friend or family member to come with you, if you like. During your appointment Don t be afraid to ask if you don t understand. For example, Can you say that again? I still don t understand. If you don t understand any words, ask for them to be written down and explained. Write things down, or ask a family member or friend to take notes. Before you leave your appointment Check that: you ve covered everything on your list you understand, for example Can I just check I understood what you said? you know what should happen next and when. Write it down. Ask: who to contact if you have any more problems or questions about support groups and where to go for reliable information, and for copies of letters written about you you are entitled to see these. After your appointment, don t forget the following Ask: Write down what you discussed and what happens next. Keep your notes. Book any tests that you can and put the dates in your diary. what s happening if I m not sent my appointment details, and can I have the results of any tests? If you don t get the results when you expect ask for them. Ask what the results mean.

5 Patients Who Did Not Attend Appointments & Failed to Cancel Doctors So far in 2017 we have had 388 booked GP appointments where patients failed to attend. These could not then be offered to other patients in need. This wasted 70 hours of GP time. Nurses So far in 2017 we have had 869 nursing team appointments where patients failed to attend without cancelling. This has wasted 203 Hours of a precious resource.
