2 CHOICES for Parents CHOICES for Parents is a statewide coalition of parents and professionals ensuring that children with identified hearing loss and their families receive the necessary resources, advocacy, information, services and support. 8 Purpose of READ Kits Deaf and hard of hearing children are at an immediate disadvantage because they are unable to tap into incidental learning Collaborating with Dr. Dana Suskind, Dr. Nancy Young, and Developmental Therapists-Hearing will enable us to close a gap that deaf and hard of hearing children are constantly fighting to fill With the support of Developmental Therapists- Hearing, provide families with strategies to encourage a love of books and foster literacy from the start

9 Key Goals To make certain that with significant parent involvement, deaf, hard of hearing, and deafblind children are engaged in services that enable them to begin developing listening and spoken language skills as early as possible Providing parents the learning opportunities and tools (reading kits) needed to engage, relate and build on vocabulary that is part of the storytelling process Providing parents with successful strategies to create language rich, interactive memories with their infants and toddlers Give children the communication skills needed to begin school on par with their hearing peers

10 Three Year Plan YEAR 1 Develop Educational Video Create READ Kits Collaborate with area professionals to leverage READ Kits through established channels Develop outreach and marketing plans to roll out locally, regionally & nationally YEARS 2 and 3 Implement the program to target audience Create & distribute more kits Promote Project READ Seek sustainable funding beyond the 3 year grant

17 How Can Families Get A Kit? Kits will be housed and distributed by Illinois Service Resource Center (ISRC) CHOICES is collaborating with Early Intervention DT-H providers to get the word out to families Information will be available on our website with links to order the Kits

18 Next Steps Create Video II targeting ages 18 to 36 months Expand Kit distribution beyond pilot families Expand beyond 8 Kits Find funding to maintain this program past the 3 year grant Hands on training being provided to DT-H providers at the Summer 2016 BRIDGES conference
