Effective date: (Example: Fall 2001) Fall 2012 A. 3. Effective date of suspended programs for currently enrolled students: (if applicable) B. The justification for this action: Language of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing is a critical course in the DHH teacher preparation program for initial certification candidates at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Changing the numbering of the course allows the course to be used in the Master s of Education in Special Education-Teacher Leader Track Adding Certification as well as the Graduate Certification program. Currently graduate students take SED 338 for the Graduate Certification program and get no credit toward graduate hours which are important to Rank. Changing the course numbers from SED 338 to SED 538_738 would allow these students to count SED 738 in their graduate program. In the Master of Education in Special Education-Teacher Leader Track Adding Certification program students currently take SED 832 Advanced Language. SED 832 assumes a knowledge base that these candidates do not have and has proven to be an ineffective course for those adding this certification. Renumbering SED 338 to SED 538_738 would allow these students to use SED 738 for this program as well. The syllabus for SED 538_738 clearly distinguishes graduate level outcomes and assignments. C. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES 1. The student will explain the process of language development, and how its components and sub components interrelate including verbal and nonverbal aspects. 2. The student will describe the acquisition of language in the pre linguistically deaf child. 3. The student will compare spoken, signed and written language development of hard-of-hearing and deaf individuals and the hearing population including the relationship of multicultural factors in the development of language. 4. The student will compare traditional and current approaches of teaching language to the hard-of-hearing and deaf.
9 2 5. The student will explain and justify the components of a successful bilingual education program. 6. The student will identify, administer, and interpret formal and informal assessment instruments appropriate for assessing pragmatic, semantic, and syntactic skills of hardof-hearing and deaf individuals. 7. The student will develop a language program based on assessment results, cultural and linguistic diversity, and developmental language principles that is appropriate for hard-of-hearing and deaf children 8. The student will demonstrate additions, modifications, and considerations of language material used with hard-of-hearing and deaf children. 9. The student will define those consultation and planning skills needed to work effectively with other professionals, hard of hearing and deaf children and youth and the parents of these students in designing and implementing language programs for hard-of-hearing and deaf children. Additional student learning outcomes for graduate students (SED 738) 1. The student will use analytical processes including error and task analyses to assess, plan, and evaluate learning, with clear listing of prerequisite skills, regular or alternative instructional objectives, learning sequence, learner outcomes and performance modes for individual learners. 2. The student will demonstrate consultation and planning skills needed to work effectively with other professionals, hard of hearing and deaf children and youth, and parents in designing and implementing language programs for d/hh. 10 3 61-0% F All course requirements listed above must be completed for a grade to be given in this course. All written work must be submitted in standard English. English usage will be considered in course work evaluation, in accordance with EKU policy. F. STUDENT PROGRESS Students are responsible for monitoring their progress in the course and computing their grades continually as each assignment is returned to them by the instructor. Students deficient in course performance prior to the last day to withdraw from full semester classes will be informed by the instructor on or before this date. G. ATTENDANCE POLICY Students must be present for all assessment events and all scheduled meetings on campus. Absences equating 20% of class meetings on campus will result in automatic failure. Class sessions missed as a result of late entry into the class will be counted as absences. The student is responsible for presenting the instructor with a reason for absences in order to be given opportunity to make up missed work. Adequate reasons for class absences include personal illness, death or serious illness in the immediate family, or participation in an approved University activity. H. Candidates adding certification do not have the language background to take SED 832 (Advanced Language for DHH). A. 2. Effective date: (Example: Fall 2001) Fall 2012 A. 3. Effective date of suspended programs for currently enrolled students: (if applicable) B. The justification for this action: 1) The Master s of Arts in Education in Special Education-Teacher Leader Track Adding Certification in Deaf and Hard of Hearing is currently a 40 hour Master s program. Candidates who have already completed valid, comparable content work in prior Rank or Master s degrees may transfer up to 12 hours of course work into the program, however, the way the program is currently displayed, they are still required to complete 40 hours. Putting a range of hours in the content area would allow candidates to transfer appropriate courses and complete the Master s with between 28 and 40 hours. 2)SED 832 is an advanced language course. Because candidates coming into the MAEd adding certification do not have an adequate background in language development and language issues in teaching deaf and hard of hearing students, SED 738 is a more appropriate course for these students.
