2 I hope everyone is surviving the freezing cold winter (especially the polar vortex!) and is looking forward to much warmer weather. Spring is a great time to go outside and enjoy feeling the warm sun and breathing fresh air. Springtime is also a busy time for us promoting Speech-to-Speech (STS) and Relay Conference Captioning (RCC), and we look forward to participating in many walk-a-thon events and annual conferences. A Message from Relay NC Manager I was so thrilled to see everyone at the DeafNation Expo in Greensboro last month. It was wonderful to have DeafNation back in Greensboro after it was absent for a few years. Over 2,800 attendees stopped by our booth and learned about the latest resources that help to make their lives more efficient. We taught the attendees about RCC and other services that can make their calls easier to follow and understand. Did you know that you can use RCC on your mobile devices when you are away from your desk? This way, you can take advantage of the RCC service even when you are on the go. What a great way to stay connected with your business! RelayNCly, Bola Desalu, Relay NC Manager A Message from CapTel NC Manager So glad Spring is here! While I enjoyed the snow we got during these past winter months, I much prefer to be out in the warm weather, when the sunny days grow longer. Now is the time we start our outreach in full swing for Spring! Coming up, we will be attending conferences such as Womens Empowerment, Southern Womens Show, Deaf Nation Expo, Live Well Expo and Caregivers Conference. CapTel NC will also be with the Durham Bulls to host booths at several of their games designed for Seniors. Come enjoy a day in the ballpark and meet our CapTel team! There are many more festivals where we will be promoting CapTel NC kudos to all the Captel NC Consultants who work tirelessly to help get the word out about the service and program. 3 Relay NC Speech-to-Speech Corner Two Awareness Days We have been promoting STS at Autism s Walkathon (Run/Walk for Autism) and Down s Syndrome Walkathon (Buddy Walk) in North Carolina as well as at their conferences here for the past few years. It has been truly inspiring to see clients who have started using STS and discovered how much easier their lives are now. World Autism Awareness Day is on April 2, Since 2007, after the United Nations General Assembly conceived this idea, this day for autism awareness has been adopted worldwide. Every year, organizations for autism can utilize this day to further increase the awareness about autism and to fundraise for autism research. Autism is a lifelong developmental disability that affects brain function. These organizations aim to improve the lives of both children and adults with autism by finding ways to help them live meaningful and independent lives. They emphasize the importance of early diagnosis and early intervention in improving level of function. Most importantly, this day encourages the greater community to embrace those who have autism and appreciate each individual for his or her skills or special talents. On World Autism Awareness Day, different buildings worldwide including landmark buildings such as New York City s Empire State Building, Sydney, Australia s Opera House and Dubai s Burj Al Arab light up with the color blue to symbolize autism awareness. World Down s Syndrome Day is on March 21, In 2012, the United Nations launched this day to increase awareness for people who have Down s syndrome and people who work and care them. Down s syndrome is a genetic condition that affects both physical and intellectual functioning. The reason the UN chose the 21st is that Down s syndrome is caused by having 3 copies (instead of the typical 2 copies) of the 21st chromosome. The goal is for individuals with Down s Syndraome to be given as much accessibility and equal rights as possible and to make sure they are accepted in society. 3

5 RELAY NC SATISFACTION SURVEY We have an annual Relay NC satisfaction survey that is open to everyone who has used any kind of relay services including: HCO, VCO, STS, RCC, TTY and Captel. This will be the second year and we hope to have more participants than last year. We are interested to see what are your thoughts on the quality of our Relay NC and Captel NC services. Your evaluation and feedback will help us improve the quality of different relay services. The survey will be online. It is due on May 1st. 6 CAPTEL TIPS Pick up a CapTel Call from Another Phone You share your household with hearing family members or friends, chances are you have had the experience of someone else picking up a captioned call meant for you, on a phone other than the CapTel. If this happens, don t panic! All you have to do is pick up your CapTel phone, and then have the other phone hung up as soon as possible, so that a connection to the Captioning Service can be established. If this is done in a timely fashion (within a minute or so after the call was first picked up on the non-captel phone) your captioned call should connect with no problem! The other person in your household will hear a series of beeping tones over the line when they accidentally pick up your captioned phone call on a different telephone. This is a good hint to know that the call should be answered on the CapTel Phone instead. CapTel How To Tip Adding a New Contact to your Phone Book You can save 97 names and phone numbers in the CapTel 840/840i Phone Book. To add a new contact to the Phone Book: 1. With the handset hung up, press the YES button to see the Options menu. 2. Press the DOWN arrow button repeatedly until Edit Phone Book is highlighted. Press the YES button to select. 3. Press the DOWN arrow button until Add a New Contact is highlighted. Press the YES button to select. 4. Use the dialing pad to enter the letters of the name of the person you wish to add. Look for the letters listed on the number keys to know which number key to press. For some letters, press the number key several times until the correct letter appears on the display screen. Example: To enter the letter L, press the number 5 key three times until you see L on the display screen. Example: To enter the name Mary, press the 6 key for the letter M, the 2 key for the letter A, the 7 key three times for the letter R, then the 9 key three times for the letter Y. You may need to wait for the cursor to change from to _ when entering letters that are on the same number key. 5. Once you have entered the contact name, press the YES button to advance to the Number section. 6 CapTel is a registered trademark of Ultratec. 6. Enter in the phone number by using the dialing pad. Use the DOWN arrow button to backspace. 7. When you are done entering the phone number, press the YES button to save your new contact information. Press the YES button to enter more contact names/phone numbers, or press the NO button repeatedly to exit the menu system. TIP: Press the DOWN arrow button for a backspace. Press the # button to add a space. Press the UP arrow button to shift lock for capital letters. Press UP again to return to lower case. NOTE: Phone book entries are stored alphabetically by the first letter of the name.

7 CapTel 840i: Troubleshooting What does the No Network Connection prompt on my screen mean? It means that the CapTel 840i is not able to send and receive data over the Internet. Check your connections again to confirm that you are connected to Internet service, and that your Internet service is working properly. If the problem persists, please contact CapTel Customer Service for help. Display screen seems to be stuck at the Waiting for Captions status bar. Nothing seems to be happening. Press the CAPTIONS button off and then on again. Hang up your CapTel 840i phone and try to place the call again. If you are still experiencing the problem, unplug your CapTel 840i from the power adapter, wait 10 seconds, then plug the power back in again. This resets the CapTel 840i, in the same way you might reset your computer. Try making the call again. Warning: resetting the phone will erase any conversations saved in memory. Try resetting the network connection by unplugging the CapTel AC adapter, then turning off the Router and the Internet modem. Wait a few seconds, then turn on the modem (make sure it s fully reset, with lights going steady). Next, turn on the Router, making sure it is fully reset. Then plug in the CapTel 840i AC adapter, all in that order. Wait for the logo screen to appear. If the problem still persists, please contact CapTel Customer Service for help. Better Hearing & Speech Month Since 1927, Better Hearing and Speech Month (BHSM) has been established to promote awareness on hearing loss and speech difficulties in children as well as adults. Organizations encourage individuals to get hearing screenings, educating the public on understanding speech disorders and hearing loss. In May 2000, the Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) initiated the first National Day of Hearing Screening (NDHS). With the population aging in America, noise-induced hearing loss has became more common. An average of 2-3 out of 1000 infants are born with hearing loss. The N.C. Gen Stat requires newborn hearing screening to be included in insurance coverage. N.C. Gen. Stat. 130A-125 (1991, 1992, 1998) establishes a newborn screening program and directs the Commission for Health Services to include hearing screening in the program. Organizations like Beginnings as well as the Division of Services for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing have been instrumental with getting the word out to the community about the importance of hearing screenings and what to do if you or a loved one has a hearing loss. There is no better time to learn than now! Facts about Hearing Loss About 20 percent of adults in the United States (48 million) report some degree of hearing loss. At age 65, one out of three people has a hearing loss. 60 percent of the people with hearing loss are either in the work force or in educational settings. While people in the workplace with the mildest hearing losses show little or no drop in income compared to their normal hearing peers, as the hearing loss increases, so does the reduction in compensation. About 2-3 of every 1,000 children are hard of hearing or deaf. An estimated 30 school children per 1,000 have a hearing loss.
