6 Disasters in FCC Numbering: How it can be a disaster or a huge benefit? Dr. Z August, 2009
Real Numbers The number you have been using on your Sorenson VP may be a fake number. The FCC order forces Sorenson and others to do away with Fake numbers and get a real number. A real number is the same as hearing people have. Sorenson fake numbers only works for VP100/VP200 to VP100/VP200.
Real Numbers There is a national database of the real numbers. Once you receive a real number, it will not work properly until it is put in the national database. Make sure the company that gave you the number puts your number in the National Database. If not, you cannot receive calls from other VPs.
Default Provider This is the company that gave you the number. You do not have to use the default provider as your VRS company. You can use other providers just as you have in the past. Example: Dial ZVRS.TVor CSDVRS.TV or
FCC Numbering Disasters Let s face it, we re confused. Watch out for the following: 1. We may keep our Sorenson fake number and our new number 2. We may get two or three numbers for the same VP 3. We might put in a bad or wrong address for 911 in our profile 4. We hand out more than one number to hearing people 5. Our hearing friends gets a big unexpected long distance bill 6. We give out our number for our second phone but when they call us, the Sorenson VP rings instead
FCC Numbering Improvements 1. BeUer 911 Emergency Service 2. Any phone to any phone - Dial hearing people by their number - Dial Deaf people by their number - Receive calls from Deaf people dialing your number - Receive calls from hearing people dialing your number 3. Hand out one number 4. The big benefit of 800 numbers 5. BeUer iden\fica\on
FCC Numbering Q and A What is a local number? A local number is a real telephone number associated with your area just like a hearing person has. How is that different than my Sorenson number? Your Sorenson number is not a real number, it is a proxy number a fake number. It will not work with other video phones and it will not work with hearing people unless the call is routed through Sorenson Because it is a proxy/fake number it may be a hearing person s number as well. (a duplicate) All VRS users are required to have a local number by November 12 th.!!
FCC Numbering Q and A What is an 800 number? It is a toll free number that starts with or 866 Toll Free means no charge for minutes of use What is the benefit of an 800 number? A hearing person calling you will not be charged for the call. For non 800 number calls a hearing person may be subject to a charge for the call This could result in a surprise telephone charge for your hearing caller
FCC Numbering Q and A 911 Why did the FCC make a law on numbering? - BeUer, faster service Point to Point - Sorenson prevented point to point calling using 10 digit numbers unless you had a Sorenson VP numbering provides point to point to and from any VP - Any hearing to any VP - Any VP to any hearing Equivalency - With numbering you will have the same as hearing people Iden\fier - The number is a beuer iden\fier for communica\on than an IP address
FCC Numbering Q and A How do I get a local number? You can get a local number from any VRS provider You must choose a provider as a default provider What is a default provider? The provider you choose to process your inbound hearing call. The provider who gave you the local number. You can only have one default provider per phone.
FCC Numbering Q and A What does it mean to port a number? A port is switching your number from one phone to another For example if you have an Ojo from one provider and you would like to start using an Ojo from another provider. You can switch the number associated with the original Ojo to the other OJO. Therefore you do not have to hand out new numbers for the new phone. You can also for example port your VP 200 number to a Z or OJO. Just remember you will lose features on the VP 200 if you do so. To Port you fill out a form from the VRS provider you want to switch to.
FCC Numbering Q and A Did anything else change? Most importantly, if you get a number from Sorenson choosing them as your default, you can con(nue to call other providers. Sorenson cannot and will not change the func\on of your VP. Please keep dialing ZVRS.TV.TV - No Change If you want to con\nue using your VP200 and you do not get a number from Sorenson (thereby not choosing them as your default provider), Sorenson can and will change the func\onality of your VP elimina\ng such features as address book, speed dial and missed calls. - Yes Change
FCC Numbering Q and A Did anything else change? CSDVRS/ZVRS recommenda\on Get a number from Sorenson and choose them as the default provider for your VP200 and get an 800 number from CSDVRS/ZVRS. - Do this and everything will work the same. Con\nue to dial around to CSDVRS/ZVRS by adding CSDVRS.tv/ ZVRS.TV to the Sorenson speed dial list. - No Change - If you want to use a Z phone as your primary phone, port the VP 200 number to the new phone or use the new number from the new phone provider.
Simply fill out a form from ZVRS How do I port?
FCC Numbering Disaster 1. Keeping your fake Sorenson number. The Sorenson number you have had for years is fake (also called a proxy or faux number). It only works in the Sorenson community and will not work with other VPs and hearing numbers. It is not a real number. When a non Sorenson VP calls a fake number it will connect to an interpreter not to the VP because the number can never be in the na\onal database and likely belongs to a hearing person. If you keep this number and your new 10 digit local number, you will create confusion for various people you communicate with. Recommenda\on: Get one real number per video phone and pick one (see 800 number) and only use one number. Make sure Sorenson loads you number in the na\onal database!!!
FCC Numbering Disaster 2 You get 2 or 3 numbers for the same Video Phone There is no logical reason for this. Your VP only needs one number from your default provider. Geing mul\ple numbers for the same VP makes no sense and will cause confusion. Recommenda\on: Get one local number per VP and keep it with that VP. Get the number from the provider of the phone. When you want to be called on a specific VP, give out the number for that VP. Recommenda\on: Choose a primary number for your business cards. First, always use your 800 number. Second, use the number of your primary VP. Recommenda\on: For business cards, print the 800 number and the number of your primary VP.
FCC Numbering Disaster 3 You put in a bad or wrong address for 911 in your profile When you get a local number, you will be asked for your address. This is the default address the 911 responder will come to in the event of an emergency. This address will not be shared or used for marke\ng. Do not give a false address for privacy. You do not want to have a fire and have the fire department show up at the wrong address.
FCC Numbering Disaster 4 You hand out more than one number to hearing people If you hand out two or three numbers to different people, it will cause confusion. They may call the wrong VP loca\on or answering machine. Recommenda\on: Hand out a card with two numbers your 800 number and your primary VP local number. This will keep it simple and is the equivalent to the hearing world.
FCC Numbering Disaster 5 Your hearing friend gets a big unexpected long distance bill Calling a local number is not free if the call originates outside the dialing area. Long distance calls can result in a toll charge for the hearing caller. Depending on the length of the call, this could be very expensive to the hearing person calling you. Sorenson s proxy numbers were never pay calls but new local numbers can be. 800 numbers are always free regardless of call origina\on. Recommenda\on: Give your 800 number to all people who do not live close to you or give your 800 number to all hearing.
Special Note On 800 Numbers Sorenson is not putting 800 numbers in the national database. This will result in calls from other VPs not working. If they put it in the national database it will work Don t get a Sorenson 800 number unless they put it in the national database. Get your 800 number from Z
FCC Numbering Disaster 6 You give a number to someone for your second phone but when they call, your Sorenson VP rings Some providers are giving out second VPs with a local number but when calls ring, the wrong VP rings This is associated with router configura\on and the ability to detect the second VP. Recommenda\on: Make sure your VP and the provider rings the right VP. Z Connect from ZVRS/CSDVRS insures this does not happen.
FCC Numbering Improvements 911 Emergency Service Faster and more accurate 911 emergency services 911 loca\on forwarded without signing where you live Could save your life!
FCC Numbering Improvements Equivalency: Any phone to any phone - Dial hearing people by their number - Dial Deaf people by their number - Receive calls from Deaf people dialing your number - Receive calls from hearing people dialing your number Any phone to any phone - From a VP200 to a Z 340 to an MVP to an Ojo to a VPAD to a Z 150. Just dial. When entering a number, you can simply dial from the key pad on the phone or use speed dial and address book.
FCC Numbering Improvements Hand out one number One number gives your friends, family and business associates the one number to call to reach you. By handing out one number, you can keep the confusion out of numbering. Recommenda\on: Hand out only the 800 number but have one local number to hand out or use on forms. This number should be the number associated with your primary VP. Recommenda\on: Have a number for each phone you use.
FCC Numbering Improvements Get an 800 number 800 numbers are available from CSDVRS/ZVRS. The 800 number can be used as your number. - Give it out to Deaf and hearing - Works point to point and hearing to Deaf through VRS All calls are free! The 800 number is free from CSDVRS/ZVRS. The 800 number will connect to the VP you specify when geing the number. We recommend using your primary VP. The 800 number from Sorenson is not being put in the Na\onal Database. This will result in a VP call to your 800 number not working when called from a non Sorenson VP.
FCC Numbering Improvements BeXer IdenYficaYon Your number iden\fies you for all forms of contact needed from credit cards, applica\ons for school, Social Security and the IRS The number gives you the ability to iden\fy yourself on business cards. You can give your number to friends and business prospects. If you are doing any small business, an 800 number is ideal to adver\se to your customers.
Conclusion Numbering is a great breakthrough for you. Understand it! Great for 911 emergency service and point to point calling with different VPs. Get one number per VP. Hand out only one number 800 or primary VP local number. Don t forget You can con\nue to dial around to your preferred VRS provider by entering their URL into the VP. Use your VP200 to dial ZVRS.TV.TV!
Final Recommenda\ons Get only one number for each VP Use one number Use your 800 number from CSDVRS/ ZVRS
