1 : Published by Healthy Hearing & Balance Care September Number Five. Page 1 We are proud to announce that Healthy Hearing & Balance Care is celebrating its 10 th anniversary. Director Dr Celene McNeill and staff take this opportunity to say thank you to all of you who have contributed to our success over the last decade. Staff News Welcome Karina Clifford, our new audiologist who started with us late last year. Karina is an audiologist with a background in Paediatric nursing. Prof Gibson continues to diagnose and treat patients with Meniere s disease at our clinic every second Thursday. Clinicians: Dr Celene McNeill, Prof Bill Gibson and Ms Karina Clifford Farewell yet again to Erica Caiuby who is now working for a cochlear implant company. We wish her well in her new career. Eleanor Birrell is on maternity leave and has been replaced by Sally and Angelica who are the new smiles behind the desk and the telephone. Administrators: Ms Sally Penny and Ms Angelica Durante Congratulations Eleanor Birrell on the arrival of baby Maisie on the 15 th of July. Baby Maisie passed the hearing test on her first day of life!! Hearing in children Since 2002 all babies born in NSW are given a hearing screening test in hospital at birth. This test detects moderate to profound hearing loss, assisting in the early intervention and treatment. Children with normal hearing are expected to develop the following behaviour: Birth to 8 weeks: baby is startled by sudden loud noise 1-2 metres away. 6 to 12 months: baby turns head towards familiar voices or sounds, babbles and responds to quiet noises. 18 to 24 months: child is able to repeat and to use a number of single words and understand simple instructions (eg: give me the book ). 2½ to 3 ½ years: child should be speaking clearly, using groups of words, following simple commands without visual clues and repeating phrases. If these milestones are not achieved it is recommended that the child have a diagnostic hearing test. At HHBC we are equipped to test children as young as 8 months old. Auditory processing Some children and adults alike may have perfectly normal hearing acuity but are not able to make sense of what they hear. This problem may be caused by an auditory processing disorder. Auditory processing disorders can also be diagnosed and treated at our clinic. The following story written by Corey s mother, illustrates the journey of one of our children.
2 : Published by Healthy Hearing & Balance Care Corey was a very active boy who joined little athletics at age 6 to burn off some energy. His parents noticed that at running races the starting gun would ring out loud and clear but he would just stand there. He had to watch the other kids leave the start line first before running himself. His parents would give him simple instructions but he did not seem to hear. Corey had a hearing test showing his hearing was normal and his mum thought he must have been just ignoring them. His behaviour however continued to worsen causing problems at school. A family friend recommended they go to Healthy Hearing & Balance Care. Corey went through a series of hearing tests confirming that he had an auditory processing disorder. The results indicated that he was able to hear but could not integrate different sounds coming from each ear. Corey was given auditory training to improve these skills. The training required a lot of commitment from Corey and his family - 5 days a week at home after school. Improvement started to show 3 months into training. Corey is now progressing well at school and his marks have improved considerably. Corey has become a self-determined person whose future looks brighter than ever Conference NewsDr Celene McNeill was invited as a guest speaker at the 4 th Prince Sultan Medical Military City International Congress in Otorhinolaryngology, Audiology and Communication Disorders in Saudi Arabia in February. Topics of her lectures included auditory processing, vestibular disorders, tinnitus, cochlear implants and BAHA. Audiology in Saudi is just as advanced but cultural differences were mind boggling. Hearing Technology News Phonak Quest range has a solution for everyone s needs. The latest introduction of the Audeo Q and Naida Q hearing aids allows access to more of life's soundscapes offering Speech in Wind, Auto Stereo Zoom and Tinnitus Balance technology to ensure you hear well everywhere. Starkey Sound Lenses: The first 100% invisible hearing aid in the world providing the most natural hearing results. Widex Dream and Menu range of hearing aids brings useful features to our patients with tinnitus and Meniere s disease. The Menu enables those with Meniere s disease to test their own hearing and re-program their hearing aids when their hearing fluctuates. Tinnitus patients are finding relief with the Dream range through its extended frequency response and Zen program. Hearing Aid Battery Sale Take advantage of our annual battery sale.
