Deaf Reach Schools and Training Centers Karachi Hyderabad Sukkur Lahore DR Schools and Training Centers provide an enabling environment where the Deaf can receive a quality education and excel in a variety of skills. The majority of students come from low income families, and receive free education, transport, and all amenities. To meet the increasing number of admissions, a Deaf Reach Primary Branch was opened in Block 6, PECHS, Karachi. The new premises are very child friendly, with a large outside play area, spacious non-walled classrooms, and capacity for 125 children. We welcome your visit! Deaf Empowerment 2010 a 10 day teacher training workshop was held for all teachers from the five DR schools. DR encourages creativity, innovation, initiative and implementation empowering the teachers to be leaders in the field of Deaf Education. Of the 52 teachers employed, 36 are deaf themselves. Additionally, each school has deaf members who play an active role as part of the management team.
Deaf Reach, Sukkur opened in March 2010 in partnership with the Sindh Government Planning and Development Dept, with a capacity for 200 students. Deaf children and teens in this large rural area are now receiving education for the first time in their lives. They come also from the outlying areas of Rohri, Khairpur, Shikarpur, and Gotki - some travelling over 50 km. distance each way. The Financial Inclusion Program empowers deaf individuals via training in marketable skills and employment, as well as sales of handicrafts. A remarkable 50% employment rate for graduating students was achieved in Notable examples include the continued success of KFC s Deaf-staffed restaurants with 5 branches in Pakistan, and Shell s Awaz program now expanding countrywide with potential jobs for 100 deaf young men. 35 students have also been given job placement in a variety of industries such as banking, retail, pharmaceuticals, and teaching. DR is grateful to have been chosen by the Sindh Government as one of the first institutions for special education to implement the Benazir Bhutto Shaheed Youth Development Program (BBSYDP). 100 young deaf adults completed a 6 month vocational course, and obtained certification from the Sindh Trade Testing Board. The program will repeat in 2011, increasing to 210 students in Karachi, Hyderabad and Sukkur.
The Parent Training and Deaf Awareness Program, now it in its third year, has been a great success, impacting positively in the lives of parents and families in all the DR schools. The twice monthly classes provide training in: Sign language; Communication skills; Health; Hygiene; Behavioral issues; and more. What the Parents Say We don t have words to express our feelings. We are so happy to see our children progress, and now we know they have a bright future. A big thanks to all the teachers and directors of DR who give such good quality of education to our children. -- Muhammad Muzaffar, father of 3 deaf students: Uzair, Khurram, Areeba Student Population June 2008 June 2009 June 2010 Karachi Hyderabad Sukkur Lahore* Total Deaf Reach Demographics as of June 2010 * afternoon vocational training only; at capacity Teaching Faculty KHI HYD SKZ LHR TOTAL Teachers Male Female Deaf Hearing We see so many positive changes in our deaf son. He was introverted, aggressive and moody, but now he is totally changed! We also learned sign language, and can finally communicate and understand each other. Thank you so very much! -- Nadeem Khan, father of Adeen A Look Ahead Deaf Reach, Rashidabad (35 km. from Hyderabad) A two story, state-of-the-art DR School and Vocational Training Center on 2 acres of land with 20+ classrooms, vocational training workshops, hostel, auditorium, and sports facilities for 500 special needs children is under construction, with tentative project completion by March We are very grateful for the land and building - a donation to FESF from Rashid Memorial Welfare Organization (RMWO). Front view concept sketch of new Deaf Reach School, Rashidabad 50,000 sq. feet; 2 stories with hostels (architect copy) DEAF REACH Our immediate goal is to raise the funding for the initial set up and 1st year running costs. A larger goal is to establish an endowment fund which will cover ongoing running costs thereafter. An investment in this project will bring abundant returns through improving the lives of the deaf students and their families as they are nurtured along a path to both self sufficiency and community engagement.
Community Services Social uplift and assistance is provided to improve the quality of life for those less fortunate due to disability or other personal hardship. FESF Summer Camp The 12 th annual FESF Summer Camp was held in July for 175 orphan children from SOS Village and 75 deaf children from Deaf Reach School. 60 young volunteers planned and organized the activities. Vocational skills training for the older students included: Leadership skills; Career building; English; Manners and etiquette; First aid; and more. Fun and educational excursions for all the children were arranged to: Thatta; WWF; Mohatta Palace; a Navy ship; Dreamworld; the Arena, and Go Aish. Other Community Projects As a result of the Motivated Volunteer Empowerment Program (MOVE), a variety of community projects were organized by volunteers trained by FESF. Hospital Uplift Program Colorful murals painted in the pediatric ward of National Liaquat Hospital; Health and hygiene awareness programs held for parents and children. Library Program Renovation project transformed an unused classroom of Abdullah Shah Ghazi Boys School into a library; Books were collected and a library now provides services to hundreds of students. Drug Awareness Program Students from Korangi Academy made a presentation on the detrimental effects of ghutka, creating awareness in numerous schools. Road Safety and Traffic Awareness Program For the fourth consecutive year, in collaboration with Indus Motors, FESF organized a Road Safety and Traffic Awareness program in 20 schools in Karachi. Each program included a performance by FESF s showteam, HeartBeat, with a total of 18,500 students benefitting from the meaningful skits, quizzes and handout materials. Events A sports day and carnival for 150 underserved children, as well as a special fun day for 100 deaf students from DR were organized. In-Kind Assistance Donations of clothes, food items, toys were organized and then distributed to needy children and families.
Eduserve Training Program Educational Development Programs The mandate of the Eduserve program is to strengthen the educational infrastructure by training teachers, administrators, parents and youth. Master Trainer Program FESF, in collaboration with NOWPDP (Network of Organizations Working for People with Disabilities, Pakistan) launched a new master trainer program in Jan. 2010, Instructing and Guiding Children with Special Educational Needs. The program objective is capacity building for teachers who impart special education in government and private schools countrywide. 10 master trainers were developed who went on to conduct courses for 226 teachers from 25 different institutes in Karachi and Islamabad. Early Childhood Development Program Sponsored via a grant from Boeing International, 7 Start Early training courses were conducted in Qatar and various parts of the UAE for 230 teachers, parents, and administrators. This series of 4-day workshops covered areas such as: Learning Through Play; Read Early; Motivation and Communication; Behavior Management. Similar courses were also conducted in Karachi for pre-school, KG, and primary teachers.
MOVE: MOtivated Volunteer Empowerment Program The MOVE Program is an educational development course that focuses on soft skill training, volunteerism, and leadership, empowering the participants to make a positive impact in the community. The course provides participants with the requisite knowledge and leadership skills to organize and conduct a community project. With the support of HSBC Bank Middle East, 8 MOVE courses were conducted for 259 participants. Course content covered the following topics: Making a Difference; Communication Skills; Teambuilding; Obstacles are for Overcoming; Leadership Skills; Goal Setting and Strategy Planning. "The MOVE program gave me insight of what we students as individuals can achieve by devoting a little of our time to helping others." Anusha Azim (Beacon House School) As a result, 14 varied community projects, some still ongoing, were planned and implemented by the attendees in underserved schools, hospitals, orphanages and institutes. These projects have had a large footprint, impacting on the lives of over 4,000 direct beneficiaries. The best moment during the project was seeing the smile on all those children s faces something only a few people get back. I am truly lucky to get that million dollar smile. " M. Salman Shahid (Beacon House School) "The program has given me valuable knowledge on how to deal with people, lessons in team working, and many other aspects which will benefit me in my practical life. Mohammad Gain (Habib Public School)
